optimism pessimism and otherism

Which are you? And why, if for any reason.
For me, my pessimism stems from the unfailing ability of humanity to screw up anything good.

Otherism, that sounds cool.

Pessimist, though to be honest it just means that when people behave like total bastards towards me or something unfortunate happens to me, I'm not too upset, because I just expect that of human nature and the world. I'd hate to be an optimist, get my hopes up, and then be crushed.

EDIT: I didn't choose realist because I believe Alexander Wendt's version of social constructivism to be a more convincing analysis of international relations than realism :p

Pessimism and realism should really be the same option ;)

I am a Realist. Optimism is a waste of time if your optimistic you are bound to be dissapointed. On the other hand if your pessimistic you are bound to get nothing good done because you never believe it can be achieved.

I chose nonconformism as the closest choice though I don't always conform to nonconformity. *nod*

The only way to be a non-conformist is to conform, otherwise you are just conforming to all the nonconformist expectations.

I hope I'm an optimist. I'm probably just a realist. Definitely no pessimist.

I chose sadism. I believe that the Universe is guided by a malevolent deity determined to bury all of his creation in misery and pain. Basically, we've got the Newbery Medal winner (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeathByNewberyMedal) of Universes.

It's hard to call myself an optimist because things DO work out for me all the time.

I'd have to call myself an Expectationist - I expect things to happen and they do.

This (http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~wgreene/entertainmentandmedia/Fads.pdf) is an interesting take on the issue, in that sometimes optimism or pessimism might be a rational response to a lack of information, and the signals that other people's actions and opinions give us about information available to them.

I myself am a proponent of the benevolent universe (http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/benevolentuniverse.html) idea, ie that if you do things properly, they will work out. No one is naturally unlucky or predestined to fail, and any hick-ups along the way are to be treated as exactly that.

I think I'm naturally an optimist, but any optimistic thoughts get crushed by reality almost immediately... so I went with realist.

I'm occasionally a pessimist too, it depends on my mood.

Pessimistic realistic idealistic sadist.

Everything is going to hell in a handbasket, there's a lot of mistakes people make by going too far to one extreme, we can do better, and I seriously plan on dancing when the world realises the part before the first comma and panics.

I'm with Ambrose Bierce on this one:

CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.

I'm a realist. I know good things and bad things happen and that there is little most people can do to effect the outcome. HOWEVER through human stupidity most things that involve large groups of unqualified individuals will fail, often spectacularly (I mean, look at democracy).

I would agree on the glass not being full, but naturally someone will knock it over before we can measure. Of course, that will be an accident and not their fault, so there's room for preventing it. And we could always measure the amount of liquid on the floor and the volume of the glass to compare to see if the glass wasn't full. But I'd rather watch people slip on the liquid and fall down

I would hope I'm an optimist. But I'm afraid I'm a pessimist. The truth is, I'm a realist.

My avatar says it all.

OPTIMISM, n.
The doctrine, or belief, that everything is beautiful, including what is ugly, everything good, especially the bad, and everything right that is wrong. It is held with greatest tenacity by those most accustomed to the mischance of falling into adversity, and is most acceptably expounded with the grin that apes a smile. Being a blind faith, it is inaccessible to the light of disproof -- an intellectual disorder, yielding to no treatment but death. It is hereditary, but fortunately not contagious.

You donĀ“t want to know. Finding it out may cause permanent brain damage and the like.
