McCain's Call

Anti-Social Darwinism
19-10-2008, 05:25
Since I live in Colorado, a so-called "battleground state," I've been seeing a lot unpleasantness in this campaign. Just today, I got a call from a live person (since I'm a registered Republican) to tout McCain and tell me about Obama's "terrorist connection." I hung up on him.

The call in the article is a robo-call with, apparently, much the same message. He's hurting good, productive candidates from his own party with these tactics. I feel that the Federal Government has always run best when the President has had to deal with a legislature that was his opposite, i.e. - conservative President, liberal legislature and vice versa. With these tactics he's virtually guaranteeing a liberal President and a liberal legislature.

Thoughts?

This sort of anecdote makes me glad I live in a state that is so solidly blue that even the Senate races are uncontested. I only have to deal with cold calls from local politicians.

I agree, the more our government is in gridlock, the happier everyone is.

Mainly because when Gov. Co. is in a gridlock, they don't fuck with the citizens.

Also, I haven't gotten any calls from anyone. Yay for having a cell phone on the "Do Not Call" list. :D

You know, for a battle ground state (North Carolina), I"m not seeing much in the way of phone calls, e-mails or ads of the political nature...

We got a call using the same tactic, and I cheerfully hung up on them as well.

Also, around our neighborhood, as far as we can tell, anyone who puts up an Obama sign gets it stolen, while the guy right across the road from us has four McCain signs in his somewhat small yard. (Small to us, I mean, not to a city-goer.) Three small-type yard signs, and a sign on the archery target they've got in the yard. (The back of the target, sadly. Also, a Bob Schaffer sign and a "Noboma 08" sign is on the target. For whatever reason, they also have a Bob Schaffer large-type yard sign.)

These people make me sad. :(

We've got our own Obama signs we plan on putting up, and taking pictures of too, to show to the police in case they get stolen. (I'm going to finangle my parents into putting them outside in view of my window, so I'll be able to see anyone taking them.)

Really.....really? You're going to actually waste the police time, because someone stole a cardboard sign that's supported by chicken wire? How much do these signs cost, I doubt very much, maybe $5?

Comon man....the police have better things to do then to track down your Obama sign.....

The point to reporting it to the police is more because everyone ELSE has ALSO had Obama signs stolen, not just because of ours.

And we live in bloody Park County. Nothing ever happens here, dude, apart from the one horrible event a couple years ago. The most the cops have to deal with is the occasional speeder.

I'm not sure how much they cost...if my parents got it from that Zuni Signs place in Evergreen, they were ten bucks a piece.

But again, not the point. (Thanks for the offer though. :) )

The point is that we're experiencing voter intimidation here in my neighborhood. Obama signs removed, McCain/Palin signs all over the place...it's getting nuts, it's not acceptable, and something ought to be done. The only reason we haven't already spoken with the police is that we'd rather have something done to us before we try that. (Of course, we'd rather the signs stay put and not get stolen at all, but if they do get stolen, those who stole it are not going to get away with it.)

And keep in mind these are my parents going after this. These are the same two people who organized the entire community up here into getting the RTD company to keep the bus lines going all the way to Pine. They're not easily intimidated.

Much easier to wrap them in a conductive material, a wire connection to the electrical mains, and a trip switch.

Although there's the problem with lethal traps and the law.

Again, it's a form of voter intimidation, and a serious breach of freedom of speech. According to freedom of speech, you should have the right to hang any kind of sign you want in your lot, so long as it doesn't contain offensive language or graphics, it should be fine. The fact that people are stealing YOUR signs means that they are not letting you exercise your own RIGHT to freedom of speech. It'd be the same if someone were stealing your bumper stickers.

Now, if everyones signs were being stolen, McBush/Palin AND Obama/Biden signs, then it would just be pety vandalism, and probably wouldn't matter. But the fact that it's only Obama/Biden signs being stolen means it is an attempt to stifle freedom of speech. If the Obama campaign is smart, they could pander some sympathy from this.

Per the signs being stolen thing - has anyone thought of chaining up a big mean dog to their sign, so that any kids who try and come near it get torn to shreds? It's perfectly legal so long as the dog is on a chain (the law recognises that anything a dog does while chained up to a chain of adequate length is not the fault of the owner).

Buy paintball landmines. The ones that use 20oz CO2 canisters and release the gas in one go in a loud bang. You can get those relatively cheap, and they're reusable. The ones that use both gas and paint are a bit more expensive, but better. Bury them around your Obama sign. Put up a small red sign that reads "Warning: Mines" with the skull and crossbones. Then install a web camera somewhere discreet.

The GOP has already been devoured. The Christofascist Dominionist types began dining on it in the 80's and consumed it part and parcel in the 90's.
