WTF?!: Live from New York: Sarah Palin´s on SNL.

WASHINGTON (Oct. 17) — Sarah, meet W. And welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48.
Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is set to appear this weekend on "Saturday Night Live" with host Josh Brolin, the star of director Oliver Stone's new movie about President Bush, "W." It's a potentially provocative pairing given that "W." at times takes brutal aim at a Republican presidency that this year's nominee, John McCain, would like to avoid.
The Alaska governor has been the subject of a popular "SNL" parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey, a former "SNL" cast member who stars in the NBC sitcom "30 Rock."
Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday was not announced. Jill Hazelbaker, a spokeswoman for McCain's campaign, confirmed Friday that Palin will appear but offered no details about what Palin will say or do.
Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. In her first appearance, Fey as Palin declared as part of her foreign-policy credentials, "I can see Russia from my house!" Through video clips posted on the Internet, Fey's dead-on makeup and gestures as well as her sharp commentary on Palin's credentials live on well past a single Saturday night.
"SNL" is a popular stop on the entertainment circuit for presidential candidates and their running mates. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show.
From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," casual, funny settings appeal to candidates hoping to connect with voters on a more personal level. And it gives them a chance to appear as self-effacing, not-so-serious regular people with a sense of humor.
There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," infuriating its star and prompting a series of tart jokes aimed at the Republican's actions. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.
"I screwed up," McCain admitted in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Just about everyone whose had an iconic impersonation done has eventually shown up-Hillary Clinton, Robert DeNiro, Janet Reno-just about every NY mayor...it's not only common it was predictable. It was all over our news for most of the week (I'd be surprised if anyone outside the US reported it). It was bound to happen, before or after the election.

Kidney stones are passable. Yet, I try to avoid them as much as possible, and certainly wouldn't develop them every week.

SNL's audience doesn't seem like it would be very receptive to Sarah Palin, so this is probably more for the painful video clips that every news organization in the universe will run for the next week and a half.

SNL was never funny.
Lies. The original cast was quite funny, and they actually had a minor resurgence of the funny a few years back when Tina Fey was the head writer.
Nowadays, though, the opening skit and Weekend Update tend to be the only parts much worth watching.

I never saw this supposedly funny SNL. Everything I'm ever shown of it is pretty much like anything I ever see off of David Letterman or Conan O'Brian: not actually funny.
But then, my humour is weird, so I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Gilda Radner was my childhood hero.
SNL stops being funny when they insist on lacking balls and doing inoffensive comedy. That's fine for talk shows but it doesn't work for a show like that that is all about skits. When they really lay it on real people that's when things are funniest. "it's funny cause it's true".
I just got done watching it. As far as the real Palin being on, amusing, but nothing too hilarious happened. She just seemed scared and stiff more than anything. I think there was a rumor she was going to make fun of Tina Fey's American Express commercials, but nothing. Oh well. The VP debate and the final Obama/McCain debate skits remain the funniest stuff they've done in a while.

It almost seemed a bit like, "Stand here while we make fun of you, then go out and say the opening line." There were lines like "polls are just scientific ways of predicting outcomes" and Alec Baldwin essentially ripping into her while pretending she was Tina Fey (which was always done better with Tracy Morgan). I don't expect her to be a comic genius...I guess the best it showed was that she could stand there smiling while people made fun of her.
EDIT: Oh, okay, she's got more...
EDIT II: Kinda the same, though, now with Amy Pohler making fun of her.

Seriously? A popular satire show includes a popular satire target you're going to change your opinion of the show? Really?
Did you even bother to watch it? I missed the opening, but Weekend Update, with the pregnant Amy Poehler rapping with Palin making pretty good moves for a white girl in a chair and only chiming in for a couple of lines struck me as A) Palin showing the viewing audience she can take a joke (especially when the cast member playing her husband came out in the racing suit and was constantly pointing to Alaska on the map), and B) the fact that SNL can handle both sides of an issue or a race. Perhaps not with an equal temperament, but they're doing comedy, they don't have to be equal in their depictions.
I'm not decrying your opinion, but that seems like a really tiny thing over which to denigrate a TV show.

It wasn't funny when Tina Fey was a writer. Unless she was a writer during the Sandler-Spade-Farley years.

No it wasn't. For it's time maybe. But even better for their time was the Dennis Miller time, the guy was a smartass. Also when both Amy Poehler and Tina Fey did it together, joking around about teachers that slept with 13 year old boys and how irresistible their crusty lips were.

Did anyone notice the llama in the opening scene when Palin was watching Fey do the press conference? There was also a guy walking by wearing something red and sparkly (you can see the opening scene in the same link as the Palin rap, it's in the list on the right).

An interesting contrast in how someone takes a parody happened during that show with someone else I don't like-Mark Wahlberg. Last week Adam Sandberg did a parody of Wahlberg talking to animals. Halfway through Palin's bit Wahlberg shows up looking for Sandberg. Later, we get a skit of Wahlberg confronting Sandberg about the portrayal but then repeating the bit ("Hey (whoever) (random and obvious observation) Alright. Say hi to your mother.") to every one who shows up, including a word for word recital of the bit to someone who shows up with a donkey.
This is the classic bit from people who get parodied-that's the way you show you have a sense of humor about yourself, not inviting yourself on the show and just sort of 'making people uncomfortable' for making fun of you and pretend wussing out on what was actually a pretty funny rap bit.

...um, Fey was, y'know, acting during the skit. She hugged Palin at the end of the show. I don't think she "hates" her any more than the average person "hates" a candidate they don't support.

Ok I missed the hug. Maybe they just didn't have enough time to come up with something better. I kinda was expecting to see Palin & Fey standing next to each other, with at least a short back & forth. And maybe Josh Brolin (W) and Darrel Hammond both playing Bush.
