There was a thread entitled this a few monts back so to void a gravedig what games are you looking forward to?

I am currently looking forward to getting my grubby hands on:

Little Big Planet Trailer (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=F9M4ffwDMmc)
Farcry 2 Trailer (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DMTDjKusVqY)

I've been hearing a lot of good things about both these games especially Little Big Planet which suppossedly bring gaming to a whole new level.

I find it super ridiculous how they often refuse to use the correct flag for Nazi Germany and instead of using it's Swastika flag, use the German Imperial flag which is historically inaccurate. This is done in Hearts of Iron and in Civilization, for example.

Also, I hate, for example in Civilization, when Hitler isn't the leader of Nazi Germany (and again no swastikas) because he's a bad guy but Stalin is the leader of the Soviet Union and there is no problem with displaying the hammer and sickle and red flag.

Ridiculous. Seriously, covering something up does not delete it from history.

Yes, Fallout 3 is a first/third person shooter akin to Deus Ex, and yes, Oblivion/Morrowind.

Fallout 1 & 2 were isometric roleplaying games where player's skill was secondary to character's skills.

Calling Fallout 3 a sequel to Fallout 2 is a misnomer and hence TURD as far as Fallouts go.

You want to know what a proper modern sequel should be?

Look at King's Bounty & King's Bounty: The Legend released 18 years later: Instantly recognizable as a spiritual sequel, it has the same parts and they work similarly to the classic.

FYI adding Pip Boy into a game doesn't make it Fallout, not by a long shot. Nor does adding statistics make a game a roleplaying game.

btw. I gather you liked Oblivion too, eh?

btw2. There's already a Fallout FPS, it's called S.T.A.L.K.E.R...

It's Fallout 3. Therefore it's a sequel to Fallout 2. Get over it.

True. But the post-apocalyptic wasteland with 50s pulp influences do go a long way to adding the Fallout flavor. And that it has FPS elements does not disqualify it as an RPG.

btw. I gather you liked Oblivion too, eh?

The lack of Falloutishness is not away from me.

It's away from the series, the prestige the title carries and the fans of the new game who have never experienced what Fallout really used to mean.

Ask yourself, will someone remember Fallout 3 ten years from now? Will it have active community churning out new mods and tweaks for it a decade after its release? Will it be that SPECIAL? :p
And that it has FPS elements does not disqualify it as an RPG.

A fair shot?

It's a real time shooter adventure game - Would you categorize that as a fair assessment? Which part is inaccurate and why?

You're also conveniently ignoring Fallout 3 isn't yet released so it CAN also turn out to be absolute rubbish..Thus one could argue that YOU are not giving it a fair shot either, aye?

No. Just according to people who think that you can have FPS elements in a game and still have it be an RPG.
Something I've personally never understood.

You either control your character and have your skill decide the outcome (FPS) or let the character's abilities decide what will happen (RPG).

There's no meaningful middle ground....And one reason why I despise eg. Deus Ex which is oft hailed as a great game: Sure it has stats, skills and you can develop them but in the end your skill determines the outcome.

It's an RPG in addition to having FPS elements. That's why your definition is inaccurate.

You're also conveniently ignoring Fallout 3 isn't yet released so it CAN also turn out to be absolute rubbish..Thus one could argue that YOU are not giving it a fair shot either, aye?

You're right, of course. It could be rubbish. The difference is that I think it will be a good game, while you are certain that's it shit.

Well, that would leave me being correct because let's face it, there's nothing remotely FPS, realtime combat or free 3D in Fallout 1 or 2. :p

Also, for pete's sake, Fallout 3 has a handheld NUCLEAR WEAPON in it: Low power handheld nuclear weapon in a post-apocalyptic setting.../me does not compute.

You probably can't even barbecue yourself a roasted kid by torching his or her groin in Fallout 3... :eek2:
It's an RPG in addition to having FPS elements. That's why your definition is inaccurate.
So you keep saying but haven't given a single example of why your view would be more correct.

You're right, of course. It could be rubbish. The difference is that I think it will be a good game, while you are certain that's it shit.
Au contraire, I presume it will be turd but reserve the right to change my opinion based on the final product.

You on the otherhand presume it will be a good game and good sequel regardless of its deviation from the Fallout tradition.
Because those are the only two options, right?
Yes...?
Bullshit.
Because you're so adamant in your opinion care to give an example of a realtime FP game where player's skill means less than the character's skills?

I don't mind, actually I welcome it because, let's face it, our viewpoints are irrevocably different.

I'll make one clarification here though: I'm an old sk0ol gamer and by default consider almost any new game to be turd, until convinced otherwise by the end product, especially if their main selling argument seems to be being a sequel to a classic.

I'm rarely wrong, heh, but eg. I was pleasantly surprised by KB: The Legend which is a pretty damn good remake of/sequel to the classic. Albeit, in all honesty, one combat screenshot was enough to convince me about its worthiness.

Heh, I can't help but chuckle at the fact that we kept that up for several posts even though neither of us really wanted to do it. But yeah, our viewpoints are different.

I'll be perfectly honest. When I learned about Bethseda's making Fallout 3, I was concerned. As time went on and I watched videos, saw pictures and read interviews, the more I became convinced that they got the spirit of Fallout right.

I'm not talking the FPS or turn-based dichotomy. I'm talking the look, the feel. The barren wasteland out of 50's sci-fi kinda thing. Sure, the animations suffer a bit--those were never Bethesda's strong point, but they still work. The dialouge is massively improved and it felt like watching FO1/2 to me.

And you can still arm an explosive, pickpocket someone, plant the explosive and watch them explode. And at the end of the day, isn't that what it's all about?

But just because that's what I wanted to see doesn't mean that it's what you wanted to see. And I can understand that. For all of my huffing and puffing at you earlier, I understand that maybe Fallout 3 just isn't going to do it for you.

I'll make one clarification here though: I'm an old sk0ol gamer and by default consider almost any new game to be turd, until convinced otherwise by the end product, especially if their main selling argument seems to be being a sequel to a classic.

I can understand that fear. I did believe at first that Bethesda was going to rape the franchise. Rest assured that, even if it doesn't measure up (and it may not) it doesn't seem to be rape-worthy. I hear they even did that one vault that got filled with psychotropic drugs and it turned out pretty well.

I'm rarely wrong, heh, but eg. I was pleasantly surprised by KB: The Legend which is a pretty damn good remake of/sequel to the classic. Albeit, in all honesty, one combat screenshot was enough to convince me about its worthiness.

Well, I raise my glass to you, good sir. I hope that FO3 will satisfy you, but if it doesn't then it doesn't. On another note, this month is a major month for gaming, no?

That sounds promising and entirely different to how I've experienced the previews...

Cool gizmos, minigames, explosions and minature nuclear weapon all seemed to make the game more mass market friendly at the cost of depth of the gameworld.

Then again, I did quit following FO3 a while ago so I don't have grasp about dialogues or further developement that could either break or make the game.
And you can still arm an explosive, pickpocket someone, plant the explosive and watch them explode. And at the end of the day, isn't that what it's all about?
Heh, there MIGHT be something done right after all :D
For all of my huffing and puffing at you earlier, I understand that maybe Fallout 3 just isn't going to do it for you.
The question for me is twofold:
- Will it be a fun game to play?
- Is it a game suitable for Fallout universe?

To be honest, I don't know the answer...It's not been released yet, there's no demo available...Only silly preview gameplay videos that probably deliberately emphasize the flashiness of the engine rather than the in-depth gameplay.

The biggest difference between our views is in presumption: I think it will bomb, you tend to disagree with my assessment :D

To my understanding the Fallour 3 system is based as much off of player skill as abitrary numbers. Even if the player is capable of jumping out from behind cover and sniping two enemies in the head for insta-kills with a pistol. The character might not be, meaning htat those head shots won't land anyway. Basically, they add a real time combat element and made player skill matter a bit more. I already payed mine off and can't wait to see what its lilke.. if its a flop I'll just turn it in for Borderlands :D.

This is usually done because a few countries, such as Germany, ban the use of the flag, and using it would thus cause the games to be illegal, and thus they couldn't be sold there.

I'm sure Paradox would use the swastikas otherwise.

The multiplayer in that game is going to be crazy. Friendly fire is on so I'm going to have to resist the urge to pick up a shotgun and start pulling an Arnold. I'll probably end up killing half my team along with the zombies if I'm not careful.

There are just so many games that look good coming out in a few months that its going to be hard to stick to just one. Hopefully the games live up to the hype though. The last few games I've played like Too Human and Force Unleashed were okay but not up to the level of things like Portal.

There are just so many games that look good coming out in a few months that its going to be hard to stick to just one. Hopefully the games live up to the hype though. The last few games I've played like Too Human and Force Unleashed were okay but not up to the level of things like Portal.

I'm looking forward to playing the infected side myself- it looks as fun as a barrel of greased weasels.

And there are indeed many excellent games coming out, but I am limiting in which ones I can get through the fickle coin of parental capital.

Yea some of the hero zombies look interesting. The smoker looks like its going to be fun and the tank is going to make for some interesting situations. Its too bad it comes out in November since it would be so fun to have some Halloween parties playing it. Turn out the lights, turn up the volume and that game would make for some scary times.

Yeah, I'm planning a LAN party for after it comes out. 8 people, for versus or two campaigns.

Killzone 2 and Empire:Total War.

Another total war game. Ah Rome total war got me hooked that game was a masterpiece, and really feeds the god complex in a human being. It is so satisfying when you take back a rebel city to slaughter the populace HOW DARE YOU DEFY ME, and to see the ground strewn with the bodies of your foes. It should be interesting to see how they aproach imperial it will have to have a much larger campaign mode last two which is saying something.

I've been kinda hoping that they'll make an English version of this:
Like that'll ever happen.

I can't read Japanese at all, but it looks vaguely like Mario Party + Code Geass= some special kind of WTF, and I find that hilarious.

Anyway, since Master of Orion 3 came out, I mostly stopped paying close attention to game development.

Ridiculous. Seriously, covering something up does not delete it from history.:rolleyes:It's not about removing it from history, it's avoiding the trivialization of industrial murder by having it included in a game.

Starcraft 2 (But I'm not sure Activision won't #&%$ it up)

Diablo 3 (see above)

Activision has given Blizzard complete in house creative license for all their own games. They will in no way shape or form interfere with Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2
