So, Jimmy Buffett sucks in concert

I know some of you are going to say "No, duh."
Others are going to ask if I'm going to blog or brag about every concert I go to. (The answer: Not every concert.:p)
Anyway, I thought I was a fan of Jimmy Buffett, based mainly on his Greatest Hits album ("Songs You Know By Heart") and his box set ("Boats, Beaches, Bars, Ballads"). So I bought rather expensive tickets to his concert here in San Diego on Thursday night.
The result: Parrotheads scare me and Buffett sounds crappy and is way too cheesy live.
Anyone else been to a concert that seriously disappointed you? Seen a band you like live and discover they suck?

Jummy Buffet sucks on recording too. In fact, Jimmy Buffet just sucks.
Anyway, I saw Motorhead last summer. Sweet god they were awful. And not just "we're really drunk" awful, Im talking wave of feedback and static noise awful. Like, couldnt even remotely play together awful. I couldnt tell what song they were playing 9/10 times, and that one time was when they played Ace of Spades.
Worst live show Ive ever seen. Seriously, Ive seen high-school kids bands play better live.
There are a few Jimmy Buffet songs I absolutely love...but no I wouldn't have gone to see him live.

I saw Bob Dylan live once. He was in a horrible mood, clearly didn't want to be there and sucked accordingly.

Shall we just stick to, "don't go and see artists that should have died/disbanded 20 years ago"?

:D
But that rather begs the question, doesn't it? I mean I've seen lots of concerts of bands whose peak of fame was a while ago, but that gave a great concert.

There are many bands that are older and still alive and kicking.
Iron Maiden still puts on the best show Ive ever seen. King Diamond is still the man. Judas Priest still has a good live show. So does Slayer.
I dont think that age always has anything to do with it. Talking to me older cousin, Motorhead has always sucked balls live.

The most disappointing band I saw live was British Sea Power, the bathos compounded by their reputation for being really good live.
Dylan rocked when I saw him, so I don't think age/distance from recording peak is necessarily a good indicator for live potential.
Seeing Aimee Mann on Friday, will be seriously steamed if she's not good!

I've seen Aimee Mann several times and she is awesome live. Hopefully, she'll have a good night on Friday.

Longlonglonglong time ago, when I was young and my tastes were poorly developed and I had just started getting into jazz and was suseptable to the really really crappy influence of the chick behind the counter at the store where I got lessons I had managed to convince myself that I liked Spyro Gyra (not the algae, the jazz fusion band). So I went to a concert. While I can say that I didn't really understand jazz at the time, I certainly could tell something seriously wasn't right. Jazz should never sound almost exactly like the album. That put the nail in the fusion coffin for me until the reunion of the Headhunters restored a little bit of my faith in instruments that have to be plugged in.

Anybody on here a Parrothead or know one? 'Cuz I'm serious when I say they scared me.
As a semi-reformed Deadhead, I shouldn't talk, but the number of people dressed in full-body Parrot costumes alone was frightening.
And, unlike most concerts I've been to, these people tailgated for 6 or more hours prior to the concert. :eek2:

Maybe if you had spent six hours drinking before the concert, you would have enjoyed yourself more. Or passed out before getting in the gate.

Good point.
EDIT: A similar mental state undoubtedly explains why I enjoyed, but have only vague memories of the couple of Grateful Dead concerts I attended. ;)

Seen a band you like live and discover they suck?
I saw the band Art Brut live before I'd ever heard a song of theirs, and I was completely blown away by how amazing they were. Then, I picked up one of their albums and was completely blown away by how awful it was. I don't know if it was just a terrible studio production, or if the energy of a live concert makes them that much better, but the difference is staggering.

Oh! I remember at one point, back when I worked at the record store we'd get a lot of free tickets and I'd end up going to shows I wouldn't otherwise go to just because I wasn't doing anything else that night. So I remember going to some package tour thing that featured Cyprus Hill and being surprised that I thought 311 was a pretty enjoyable band. But when I got to the store the next day and checked out their stuff I was all, "This really isn't all that special..." Another show, they're part of the line up, I'm all-"I'm groovin' to this" Maybe I didn't listen to the right album. I go through practically the whole catalog (not a big one, so it's not hard). Meh to 'no, really, I'm not into this.'
Conclusion-both times I was smoking some of the best weed I've ever had so I take it as evidence that sometimes weed can make even crappy things awesome.

Edgar Winter made me want to bore holes in my head with a power tool. Deep Purple, on the other hand, was amazing in concert, despite the fact that the half the guys now look like my Grandfather...

The only concert I've been to was for Anri.
she opened with my favorite song and the concert was great.
other than that, I really don't go to concerts. I prefer to act like an idot at home or here on NSG.

You're clearly going to the wrong concerts. Bluegrass sounds just as good live as on a recording (of course, that isn't saying much if you hate bluegrass)

Couple or years ago, Buffett came to Cleveland and played in Jacob's Field. The Parrotheads obliterated the field, it hasn't been the same since, they even pulled it all the way out, and it's not been as nice.

Oh, I definitely went to the wrong concert Thursday night, but usually I'm quite pleased.
The Cure, The Pogues, The English Beat, Liz Phair, Blues Traveler are some of the last few concerts I attended. All were awesome --met or exceeded expectations.
I'm not sure I like much bluegrass. Does John Prine count?

It's true. 'Cause, see, if you had put me on your hey-I've-got-tickets-wanna-go-with-me? list, so that I could have gone to that Pogues concert with you, then I would also have gotten a call asking if I wanted to go see Jimmy Buffet with you, and I could have stopped you from entering that Slough of Despond by reminding you how much Jimmy Buffet sucks in real life. By hurting me, you hurt yourself. *nods*

Thing is every band has really bad gigs, I remember seeing Reel Big Fish live somewhere, and it was one of the worst gigs I've ever been to, really out of time, really bad sound etc... I really disliked them after that. I went to see them again however (reluctantly), and they sounded completely different, much more together, much clearer with a way better sound, and now I quite like them again.

I've seen Slayer on stage this year, their performance was lacking. That was disappointing, especially since I know they usually do a better show.
