Football (American) discussion.
So its coming upon half way through the NFL season, and I was wondering what the football fans on this forum thought about the season so far. Which team/player has surprised you the most with their performance? Which have been the biggest disappointment? Who do you see as having the best potential for going on in the postseason? How is your favorite team doing by your standards?
For me, I have to say that the Titans being 5-0 at this point is the biggest surprise for me. I don't recall the Titans being too well of a team in the past few years. They aren't playing Vince Young, but that seems to actually working best for them, considering his threat to commit suicide a few weeks back. If they can continue this win streak they will hit the playoffs, although I don't see them as strong enough to make it past the first round.
The biggest disappointment in my opinion is that the Colts are off to a mediocre start. 3-2 is usually a good start for many teams, but the Colts are the type of team that can be 4-1 or 5-0 easily. This year, they have failed to do so. If they don't pick up their game they might be able to make the playoffs, but will not make it to the super bowl.
I believe that the Giants are a safe bet to make it to the post season and even the Superbowl again. They have an improving quarterback and good receivers, especially Plaxico Buress, who towers over anyone who covers him.
My team, the Steelers, are off to a good start of the season. They are 4-1 and have a medium difficulty schedule. This week they face the 0-6 Bengals, which are a division rival, and a sure win. The only problem they have faced with their season is a terrible Offensive line. When the line is doing their job Big Ben can effectively get the ball to where ever he wants it. However, if there is any pressure and the line fails to do its job he will be sacked. He has been sacked 18 times this season so far, 8 of them coming from the game with the mediocre Eagles. 18 sacks is almost as much as his 2005 total season sacks. If they can fix their line, then Ben will be able to make the plays, as we have seen him do in the past, and I could see them making a major playoff run.

What you're talking about isn't football. And with that, I'm off for the night.

Football (American Football) is how this should read. Football is a different sport.
Sorry there was a thread that said Football(soccer), so I was just clarifying that this was Football (football) not soccer. ;)

I'm in the middle. Americans should just switch to rugby; same basic sport, but less armour, much more fun.

Zilam, just post a request in the Moderation forum asking the title of the thread be changed to "NFL discussion". That way, there's no confusion, and anyone who wants to continues to spam crap about how American football is dumb can go fuck off in another thread.

yeah we play rugby, which is this but without the sissy-boy body armour, and no 5 minute breaks between every 10 seconds of play.

That's just inviting people to come in and talk about how American Football is dumb/lame/wussy/etc., when really you're looking to have a discussion about the current NFL season.
Incidentally, I'm a Pats fan, so I'd rather not talk about this season. We're not doing poorly because Brady is injured as much as because Belichick et. al. haven't done anything to shore up our linebackers and secondary in like five seasons, except get Adalius Thomas. The Pats were able to get away with having a suspect D when their offense was scoring billions of points per game. Unfortunately, Brady did get hurt and Cassel just isn't going to throw 52 TD passes. The Patriots used to be able to win low scoring affairs when our offense was mediocre because our defense was the stingiest in the league. Now we have a mediocre offense and a mediocre defense, and that makes us a mediocre team. Brady will hopefully be able to return from this injury, but hopefully the Pats front office looks at this season and realizes that they've neglected making meaningful changes to the defense for three or four seasons now.

I think it's funny when foreign people criticize the culture of other foreign people! Especially when it's about things like sport and leisure!
I'm not a particularly big fan of football (yes, I'm calling it football and not "American football" because I'm an American and that's the term we use), but I find it fascinating from a scholarly perspective because it really is a quintessentially American sport, and is really constantly evolving and changing. The dynamics of teams, coaches, and leagues is really interesting- I'm surprised more anthropologists haven't written more about it.
Soccer (yes, I'm calling it soccer and not "football" because I'm an American and that's the term we use) is fun to play, not so much fun to watch. Then again, it's a game for Europeans who think they're better than everyone else.
See what I did there?

Yet another season of WTF for a Browns' fan. Although whooping the NYG was a treat.
The season is still young. If we beat Pittsburgh in the season finale, it's all worth it.

Oh has that started yet? My jaw is still dropped to the floor from Brett Favre no longer being the Pack QB.
As an Eagles fan, I cringed when I read the title. *sigh*
That being said, the Raven's QB, Flaco, is doing really well, which makes me happy, because my brother knows him from college.

It's pretty sad that the lions, year in and year out, are the worst team in the NFL.

Great trade for us. We get three draft picks, including a first rounder. Even though that first rounder will probably be low, we could trade up with all the other picks we get. The lions need lots of players. They need to rebuild their offensive line and secondary, at least. A quarterback would be nice too. Yes, we lose a great young wide receiver, but we already have another great one and a few decent ones.
I'm curious as to why Dallas would make the trade. They are losing a ton of picks, yet they gain a superstar wide receiver who will have to compete with another superstar wide receiver and a pro bowl tight end. Doesn't make any sense to me.

If the Cowboys continue to lose three or four guys to injury every game like they have been, it might not be that low of a pick.
Plus, with Calvin Johnson, there's really no reason for Roy Williams to even be there. It took Detroit four straight years, but they finally found a WR worthy of being drafted that high.
I haven't the slightest idea why Dallas would go and pick up another wide receiver, when the position is arguably their strongest. Unless they know something about TO that the rest of the world doesn't.

American "Football" is rugby for wimps who think they're hard.
I always find this amusing. since in most cases the pads of American football are used offensively. First thing the coach teaches is used the pads/helmet to pop someone. sort of like being hit bare handed Versus being hit with brass knuckles.

Have you ever played rugby?
I have played both (well all three if you want to count League and Union as different, which they are, but that is just a complication for the Americans), and the hits are about as hard in both, just that the pads (not shoulder pads or helmet, but rib, thigh, tailbone, and groin protection) do actually make American football less painful to play. But I have to qualify that I was a Defensive end, so exactly what it is like to be hit hard by a middle linebacker I can not say from first hand experience. Basically I did the hitting, but as I played blind side flanker in Union and centre in League, the same applies there.

What does your location have to do it. Have you been to every region in your country and seen the women. For that matter have you ever been to America, and how many American women have you actually seen.
It is highly unlikley you have seen a proper sample of women from both countries to draw such a conclusion either way.
