So, the Chaffey Community Republican women, Federated decided to send out an anti-Obama newsletter containing this

http://www.ktla.com/common/medialib/image/42890.jpg

As for what they have to say about it (taken from this article (http://www.ktla.com/landing_news/?Newsletter-of-Obama-with-Watermelon-Spar=1&blockID=81317&feedID=171)) . . .

"Diane Fedele, president of the group, said the move had no racist intent.

"I never connected," she said. "It was just food to me. It didn't mean anything else."

Fedele said she had received the illustration in e-mails and decided to reprint it to poke fun at a previous remark by Obama that he doesn't look like other presidents.

"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further,""

So what do you think? More deplorable racism from this campaign or an "innocent" "mistake"?

There's racism involved alright. Chicken, Kool-aid, ribs, watermelon?... come on. According to sterotypes, this is the food African-Americans eat. The intent is pretty obvious considering the fact that Barrack Obama belongs to the African-American community. Fidele is full of shit.

America's being the same since the 1600s. Not much has changed there, no matter what some people say. Unfortunately the country's as racist as always. And for that matter, neither has Europe. Racism is as rampant here as it is in the US.

It's basically about a pizza shop run by stereotypical wogs (European-Australians) with lots of other stereotypes peppered throughout. It's quite funny, but can you imagine a US show with stereotypical African-Americans? There'd be a goddamn race riot.

This would have been a non-story but for Diane Fedele's attempt to spin it as innocent. Of course it was racist and stupid. Innocent mistake my ass.

We've all seen equally racist stuff here and elsewhere, and mostly we snicker at the lulz value then move on. Had she said "Of course it was racist and stupid, and we never should have released it. I apologize on behalf of my group. It won't happen again," that would have ended it. Compounding her idiocy with that lame 'apology' was her real mistake.

People don't recoil from idiocy. People recoil from idiots defending that idiocy beyond the point that it's defensible.

Which means that groups like MoveOn will now try to somehow link Fedele to the main McCain/Palin campaign to "expose" the whole Republican Party as trying to derail the Obama campaign purely out of racial hatred.

This is just ridiculous. First of all, the people who are bitching about it should grow thicker skin. Second of all the people who are defending it and saying it's not racist are either outright lying or some of the dumbest people I've ever seen.

It's obviously racist because it's making fun of stereotypical black foods. To be honest, the people who made it HAD to know that (so they're not dumb, they're just lying) because, well, statistically what are the chances that someone just HAPPEND to use an image that just HAPPEND to have a watermelon, bucket o' extra crispy and ribs on it....

It's just ridiculous. Makes me want to slap these people who are denying it...."it's not racist because my Dad is Mexican!"...as if that has anything to do with it!:p

Although this isn't the most bigoted thing to happen at Chaffey (which is where I go to college) it is one that bothers me. After all, they should know that these are racial stereotypes, though apparently they didn't, or pretended not to, even though there are black members of the group.

Interesting tidbit: On the local news a reporter asked a member about it, and pointed out that the food was a racial stereotype, and the member responded, and I'm not kidding, "Says who? You?" then they talked to a black member who said it was racist and the first woman should talk to her.

Oh, and as for the most bigoted moment at Chaffey, that dubious honor goes to an antiabortionist who set up pictures of aborted babies in teh middle of campus, and used a megaphone to rant on and on and on for two hours, saying things like baby-killer, you're going to hell, etc. It's now legendary here.

White Australians spent the better part of fifty years being incredibly racist to "wogs". It's not slavery, but it's still pretty bad. I think that we've managed to go past that as society, and that says a lot about us. I have skip friends; fifty years about, skips were taunting my father about being a wog.

It's broader than that, however recent that is. It now sometimes refers to North Africans and people from the western Arabian peninsula.

I'm trying to think of a racist stereotype they missed, but I'm coming up blank.

He's not molesting a white woman. Mind you, we can't see the back....

This isn't too pretty either - from the good folk in the Virginian Republican party

The last image, of a brown-skinned man who looks very much like Barack Obama, with the words "America must look evil in the eye and never flinch" superimposed over his face, is vile. Whether or not it IS Barack Obama - and it's close enough that a lot of people could reasonably conclude that it is - this is basically arguing that anyone with skin darker than baby powder is a potential threat.

Pfhhh, I dunno, I wasn't there.
Neither was I, but the long period when racial intimidation was routinely enforced by murders is too notorious for me not to have heard of it. I take it you are conceding that the situation in Australia was really nothing like this?

Oh come on, grow some thick skin, Americans. If a wog ran for PM of Australia, I'm sure they'd have shit like this with hommas, kebabs, cevaps and holubtsi, and it would be goddamn HILARIOUS.

Which is funny. You're gonna have a hard time proving that racial humor isn't funny to most Americans. Indeed, it's not coincidence that things/people like (off the top of my head) South Park, Chris Rock, Family Guy, Dave Chappelle, Mind of Mencia ect ect ect are so ridiculously popular amongst Americans yet controversial for their racial humor (and not just that, obviously).
If TAI thinks it's racist, that's the end of the argument.

And no, that isn't meant to infer he's a racist. But he's certainly one of the most difficult people to convince that something is racist.

...when the fuck did I start qualifying my humor? See what racism does to people? :(
Indeed, and I understood what you meant without clarifying.
Um. You came so close, and yet missed the mark.

Yes, it is blatantly racist and denying it is racist is stupid.

No, it isn't particularly funny. It is a sad comment on how screwed up our country is on the subject of race.

As for "thicker skin," say that to the black Republicans that received this in the mail. Their own group resorting to such horrible stereotypes.
It is funny. See, we can go on all day because these are personal opinions on what is funny or not..and, like I've shown above to Nodinia, racial humor is funny to many, many Americans.

However, it is unintelligent of the woman to send this out, obviously because she may lose Black Republican voters as a result of it. That doesn't make it 'horrible', it just makes it funny but unintelligent as political motivation.

There is a large gap between being simply funny racism that is not politically intelligent and 'horrible racial stereotypes'.....

These aren't horrible. They're just stupid and funny.....

Making fun of what black people eat and drink is not horrible....

At the risk of losing my Anti-TAI Club Card, I think you make some good points.

I was thinking "horrible" from the point of view of someone who is black, particularly a black Republican. Obviously, it could have been worse, but that doesn't mean it isn't pretty offensive.

I've no doubt that it is. This isn't an example of it however.

Having said that, I do find it funny and I was giggling throughout that CNN video-report. :D

Well, I disagree both with your sense of humor and your predictive skills.

Regardless, does Australia have a long, continuing history of slavery, segregation, and discrimination against "wogs"? If not, your example is inapposite.Actually, Australians don't do slavery, they're more into genocide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_War).

Oh, well because I really wouldn't that and I'm eager to provide you with a chance to redeem yourself, I'll probably be making a thread on this issue I've had my eye on, about Mosques in Germany reported on by Der Spiegel.

I was thinking "horrible" from the point of view of someone who is black, particularly a black Republican. Obviously, it could have been worse, but that doesn't mean it isn't pretty offensive.
It's only horrible in the sense that it's horrible for the Republican community, who's black membership (of that community), which is bound to decline.

To me it's light 'racism', like if you said Jews love money or Asians are nerdy number crunchers or so.....it's not horrible at all, it's just slightly negative light racism, which isn't problematic by itself but will be politically problematic because that's inappropriate in the political arena and does nothing positive for the numbers of Black Republicans in the community.

I don't think we disagree on that, but I disagree and state that there is nothing 'horrible' about it, even from a Black perspective, in my opinion. (Obviously I'm not Black)

Yes, its amazing in my 39 years I've never seen or heard of anyone called Richard Pryor or Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, Joan Rivers, Mel Brooks....
How unfortunate that you've lived in such seclusion all your life. :p

I think you are playing a bit fast and loose with the categories of "slightly negative light racism" and "light racial humor." The intent of those that created this thing was NOT making a joke, they were trying to make a racist point that was hurtful. (Although they are trying to deny that now.)

I'm not big on telling people that are offended by something racist that they should just "grow thicker skin" rather than be offended. Especially in a country with a history of and ongoing problem of extreme discrimination, this kind of shit is more than "light humor."

And what was that racist hurtful point? That Obama likes fried chicken, purple drink, and ribs.....?
I'm not big on telling people that are offended by something racist that they should just "grow thicker skin" rather than be offended.
While I am because I'm of the opinion that if you don't let minor things get to you, notably things that may be a bit negative but really not extreme nor hurtful, then you'd be a whole lot better off in the long run and would have lower blood pressure and less facial wrinkles.....
Especially in a country with a history of and ongoing problem of extreme discrimination, this kind of shit is more than "light humor."
Indeed our history is filled with extreme discrimination and in some places it's an ongoing problem, but this not an example of one of them, in my opinion.

Something hurtful and extreme would be if the Republican party sent out a newsletter that had a picture of Obama being hung on a tree by the GOP, reading: "Hang that ******, it's what's best for White America."

Again, the "it could have been worse" argument isn't really that persuasive.

And you overlook the "food stamps/black people are on welfare" aspect of the newsletter.

And racial stereotypes don't exist in a vacuum. The newsletter was obviously not merely saying "don't vote for Obama, he likes chicken and Kool-Aid," but rather was appealing to a broader stereotype about how black people are "different" and undesirable.
