Perhaps there's still hope for America. :)

Perhaps indeed.

Well, we know what they can do should retirement prove too boring.

Well, you should give some credit to their speech writers, but their comedic timing is not too shabby.

Is there any way to watch CNN videos on a site that's not CNN? They seem to be incompatible with my browser or something.

I'm having the same problem.

I bet Youtube has em. I'll look.

McCain:

There's more, but that's the brunt of the CNN segment.

Same thing. There's more, but that's all the CNN ones had.

If it helps, you can see C-SPAN's broadcast (http://www.c-span.org/Recent/Default.aspx) of the entire dinner on their website (scroll down the list o' recent programs about halfway -- you'll need RealPlayer.)

That was awesome. I think that whoever wins should adopt the comedy strategy for all but the most inappropriate occasions. Laughter-->Happiness-->Less glumness about an economic crisis-->Markets recover.

I have to disagree. McCain has a far superior sense of comic timing than Obama, though his material was much more edgy than his opponent's at times. He really does a much better job at delivering punchlines with a straight face than Barack ... a talent that will do him well when he hits the lecture circuit after losing the election. It's nice to have a fallback skill, even when you're rich as Croesus.

As to the edgy nature, compare McCain's attack against MSNBC to Obama's attack on Fox News. McCain told Keith Olbermann to shove something (I don't recall what) up his ass. Obama just 'didn't feel the love' from the media as represented by Fox News. Being bitter and angry worked for Sam Kinnison, but it's not something I want to see in my next President.

It's not his fault, he was a Navy man. ;)

oh its not like olbermann doesnt deserve it. he gives mccain a ration of shit on a regular basis. (not that mccain doesnt deserve it either)

mccain was funnier but he's a funnier guy in general. it was nice to see him be charming and funny. ive missed that guy.

i was glad that obama could be funny at all. comedy isnt easy and many people dont have the knack. (think of how many times bush has made you laugh when he was trying to)

Your links didn't work for me, but surprisingly enough searching for "Obama/McCain" and "Dinner" did the trick.

Gotta hand this one to McCain. He delivered an overall better routine, though the beginning was a bit lame. Obama didn't really pick up until the end when he denied the messianic rumors, but carried the joke a bit too far.

You know I've watched them both a second time and it was much funnier the second time.

I really did like seeing McCain be the guy I really like. He was fun and smart and on the ball. His timing was near perfect and he never stepped on the jokes. It was a high bar and, NO, Obama did not reach it.

However, Obama had great timing and the attack on Fox News was broader than that. And there were others that were on an equal level with the Olbermann comment. Take the Executive Sales Meeting at AIG comment. Obama doesn't have the same animosity towards the media, even Fox News, so his stuff will hit elsewhere. The hit on Rudi and the "tough primary" to John McCain was gold.

Yeah. Obama tries, but the material really wasn't the best, and the thing is, he's far better at the serious thing.

Which is really kind of unfair in a way, that the funnier guy is the guy whom we definitely would not want as President. I like my leaders with a sense of humor, darn it. :(

I think McCain was better, I like his jokes, and he had good timing. Obama was weak at the beginning and that AIG joke wasn't really that funny.

Maybe they should have another debate, this time a "Yo' mama" debate. *nods*

It wasn't a competition.

Though, I think it could make for a lovely debate format. :D

I think that should have been the format of one of the debates... maybe in the future?
