A funny thought

What if some scientist dude invented a cheap, effective and economical engine that ran on some mundane overabundant substance that produced laughing gas as exhaust?
To start us off I think laughing gas will fill the atmosphere forcing mankind to evolve into super clowns.

I don't get it.
I don't get it.
Laughing gas is funny...
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) is highly flammable... no good could come of it being the exhaust product of a combustion engine.

I can imagine a lot of people knelt down behind their cars, inhaling the exhaust.
EDIT: Though every car would be a Pinto, as SaintB noted.

Laughing gas is funny...
That's what everyone thinks...before it kills them...

Now you know.
Many many car accidents.
I guess you think car crashes are funny too SaintB...sicko...

He'd be shot and all work, materials and blueprints would be held or destroyed by the electric car companies and their backers, General Electric! Dundunduhhhhh!!!

Didn't they already invent that? Yes. It was called the '73 Ford Pinto. :p

At room temperature, it is a colorless non-flammable gas...

I high temperatures like those found in a combustion engine it becomes flammable. Thats how it is used in tuned cars as a speed booster, it is injected with the fuel into the piston chamber and causes a more intense burst... that's why some cars actually trail flames from their tailpipe.
At least this is what I have been lead to understand.

non-flammable means flammable

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that most people have realized that almost every post I make is about 79% Spam and 21% wholesome content. I call them Spamburgers.

It's a stong oxidizer. SatintB wasn't exactly correct, but it is a fire hazard.
TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
In case of fire in the surroundings: use appropriate extinguishing media.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion: see Chemical Dangers.
Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.
In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.

Close. It breaks down at fairly low temps, putting more O2 into the system for better combustion.

The same Detroit that's slowly decaying?
That's one of the reasons why it's decaying...they innovate only under the severest duress, if then. (Or at least it seems that way.)

Something tells me that filling the atmosphere with nitrous oxide wouldn't be an especially good idea. The world would be littered with smiling, asphyxiated corpses... assuming the atmosphere didn't explode the next time somebody lit a cigarette.

*hides blueprints* That's crazy talk!
Um, laughing gas has the nasty tendency to kill people in higher doses, which is why it's hardly used as an anaesthetic anymore (and that's a controlled flow of the gas). Basically, you would be barred from driving through tunnels and traffic jams could get really funny and then not so funny.
