When it comes to politics it is.

Seriously, ads in video games pissed me off enough. I dont want to see campaign ads in video games damnit. Im enough of a junkie as it is. I play games when Im not involved in politics.

Luckily I dont play any of the games its in.

The Democrat's ads are aimed primarily at game players who like sports

so this campaign season is a race to see who can throw the most money away? (well more than usual)

There was an article recently about how Obama has literally more money then he can spend.

If money is no object, why is he running for office rather than investing in building a giant porn-themed theme park on the moon? Obama's priorities: very wrong. You really want a guy in highest office who settles for second best?

I bet that's one move the Republicans wish they'd thought off.

Don't think it's too bad. Quite the opposite, it's a pretty smart move. I mean, if the game comes with advertising anyway, what does it matter what is advertised?

It might win Obama a lot of votes simply from the novelty.
As well, the gamer demographic (if there is such a thing) might be impressed that he cared enough or was intelligent enough to recognize them and vote for him because of it.

Advertising in video games isn't all that new...

But the idea of temporary advertising, advertising that is written over in a later patch, is relatively new. And rather creative. Or disturbing, depending on how you view the purity of video games.

In that case, Obama should just cut out all this advertising crap and offer $50 to every person who votes for him.

Not only that, they'll compare Obama's comp-savy to John "I've never sent an email" McCain.
"Hmmm...", they'll ponder, "Which candidate might better represent my interests?"

It'll be interesting to see how votes for Obama turn out with the 18-34 males (an area where he has somewhat suffered in the polls) now that he has done this. Obama choosing this form of advertising does show some ingenuity in his campaign, appealing to a group of voters who have been polled more favourably to McCain than him in a way that no one would have thought of. Let's hope it works.

Considering that xbox are charging users for the use of their internet connection to play multiplayer and that video games are over-priced anyway... if they're getting revenue from advertising in-game (which willing to bet costs a fair whack heh) then maybe it would be kind of them to pass on the money made to users of the cosole - perhaps provide features such as online multiplayer for free?

You pay to see a movie at the cinemas, and they still advertise to you.

The think with video games is, in many of them advertising is sort-of required to help build an authentic atmosphere. Sports games in particular, as their real-life counterparts are plastered in sponsorship and advertising billboards, and for those to be absent in the game would make it seem less authentic. While some developers, most notably Rockstar, make up their own advertising to set the mood, often with humorous results (although GTA IV wasn't so good in that regard as its predecessors), others figure that real adverts will not only make them money, but beef up the authenticity of their subject.

I don't know how it works in America, but if you get presidential candidates advertising on billboards and stuff over there, I don't see why you can't include that in a game where relevant as well.

So long as the advertising doesn't become too blatant (i.e. having a scrolling newsticker at the bottom of the screen telling you to vote for Obama, buy Cola and eat pizza), I'm OK with it. So long as its relevant. If we start to see ads for Obama in games like Mass Effect, then it's going too far.

But you already own the internet connection that you're using--and basically there's very little basis in my point except that I dislike Microsoft tbh--but still, it isn't fair and is against what I think is fair... to me... and stuff...

The think with video games is ...SNIP

Agree - I like having relevant adverts in games, movies etc... mostly I find it builds on the atmosphere as you said and so long as it doesn't lead to scrolling things across your screen advertising stuff then I'm good for it.

Well, by connecting you to XBox live, and by hosting all the servers and stuff, Microsoft are doing something for you, so, they shouldn't have to give it to you for free if they don't want to. But they can, like Wii does. So, *shrug*.

Well I'm not saying it isn't a good service they run - it just makes me raise an eyebrow when a company that's basically underwritten by Microsoft chooses not to give something they easily can give; for free to it's users. I'm all for corporations/people making money - just making users pay for such a basic service when they have more money than anybody should ever feasibly have, I find distastefully greedy at best.

...But I think I may be detracting from the purpose of the OP!

Not many - because they'd still want advertisers to pay them for the ability to update the games in order to advertise (which would be the right thing to do in my eyes heh).

If they made it free, a lot more people would be on XBox live (I would), which means a much larger advertising base, so advertising revenue for Microsoft would increase greately.

I agree, in the sense that more and more I'm getting the sense that these companies think they have a RIGHT to put their ads absolutely anywhere they want.

Product placement has been around for years in TV and movies and on some level maybe having a billboard for Coca-Cola fly by as you race in Burnout:Paradise is not such a big deal, but at the same time I have to wonder why I'm paying for the developers to include code in the game that allows for this sort of thing. (Heck, if anything there should be a discount, since the cost of developing the game is being offset somewhat by advertising revenues.)

No difference, IMHO, between a campaign ad for Obama and an ad for Holiday Inn. In either case, I'd hate to think I'm paying them to advertise.

The solution? Piracy!* So, even though you still get the advertising, you don't get the pain of knowing you paid to be advertised to.

*The Fonzica national committee does not condone acts of piracy, fraud, or adultery... most of the time.
