Botox and other cosmetic surrgeries

The makeup thread got me thinking about this.
I don't understand Botox at all. That means I understand what it does, I don't understand why anybody would want to do it.
My wife and I talk about this quite offten. She insists that come a certian age she will be getting some shots. I ask why not just grow old love, after all we all do.
She though is mortified with the thought of a few wrinkles(her choice but I'm not that happy about it).
So fans of Botox in particular, and fans of cosmetic surgery in general, please help me to understand this.
Why do some people appear to be afriad to grow old naturaly and dislike the thought of wrinkles?
For me, you can easerly tell a persons age, and quite offten when I witness a person in their 50's with baby smooth face skin, the expresion 'Mutton dressed as lamb' just pops into my head.

I understand it. Women are bombarded with the message that their worth is determined by how perfectly, flawlessly sexy they are from a very young age, and it's hard to get that message out of your head even when you know rationally that it's stupid.
I don't think I would ever get Botox shots myself, though - I honestly think older women with crow's-feet and laugh-lines are more attractive than smooth-faced women, because the former look like they smile more, and smiling is sexy. :)

Hah it's not that I do not belive you, but the same can be said about men. You have to have six pack, know how to dance, and have fantastic personal grooming skills.
No I don't really buy that Im afraid.
It's like as a teenager you are more concerened with your image than you will be once you pass 30(for the majority of us). I can understand this about teenagers, I can almost understand this, almost about older people, and of course it is not just women that seem affected by this.

Inject poison into my face? That sounds fun!:p
But then again, I'm a tranny and sometime in the future will be having my balls cut off and my dick turned inside out and made into a vagina. So it might be a teensy bit hypocritical for me to criticise other people's surgery decisions as too extreme. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Ageing gracefully only works if your wrinkles are in the graceful places and don't distort your face.
I have frown lines, if they get any worse I might be in a mood to do something about them. I'm also going to get some lifting and tucking done after I lose the rest of this weight. I am doing it for me, because I want to.
If you are unhappy with yourself, change. Sometimes that takes surgery.

The pressure is far greater for women. And we put it on each other. You see it in the gay male community too, but in a slightly different way. A large majority of women seem to have this fascination with tearing each other down. Look who buys the lions share of gossip rags or reads gossip blogs.
I'm going to have some really hideous lines around my mouth in another 10 years or so. I will be getting those removed. I also want to get laser hair removal [technically reduction] under my arms and my bikini area. I'd love to only have to shave my legs. My bikini area is sensitive, shaving and waxing give me bumps or ingrown hairs and I can never get a perfectly clean shave under my arms that lasts for more than a few hours (well, since my fist treatment it lasts for a day or two).

Ahh now this I am more familiar with. Yep I also don't understand the deal with high heels, why would a woman want to put herself through that!
I do get that whole 'it's for myself' thing(even though I think there is a little bit of self deception going on there).
It's more the whole why not just look your age thing?

Why though not learn to just let it be. You are going to get old, people WILL be able to tell how old you are, so what are you actualy accomplishing?

I'm something of an exception then. I'm 20 and I've never really put much effort into my image, aside from wearing a shirt going out now and then.
And has been pointed out today, I have quite the beer belly for a man my age.

botox is for women who like to look at themselves in the mirror and see a serene face.
its not for those who are leery of looking creepy and expressionless.

Indeed. It's about taking a little pride in yourself and enjoying the way you look.
It's the same reason why people work out, tan, groom their bodies (hair and such), apply lotion or whatever to their faces, gel their hair, ect ect....
If it makes you feel good about your body/self, then why not?

It's not the getting old part. I don't mind the other wrinkles, the gray hair, any of that. It's just that my grandparents look like scary clown people. I don't want to be a scary clown.

I think the not wanting to look your age is I think more US culture centric (but I could be mistaken). I think the cultural thing has to do with the wierd denial that exists in the US culture about death.

I'm so proud I made a thread that inspired a thread. First time for everything!!!
In terms of the OP, I will be having varicose veins removed, and maybe some botox as I age. My mum has really bad frown lines, so if I get the same thing - see ya.
I stay well groomed not because I care what people think of my appearance, but because when I'm well groomed I feel healthier. I shave my face because having a lot of facial hair itches and gets ingrown causing acne witch is painful and gross. I wash daily because I don't like stinking, I trim my mustache because I don't like chewing on it. Its not about looking good, its about feeling good.

It's not the same at all. It's about looking younger than you are, it seems to be fear of old age, or at least looking your age.

Older women can look striking and beautiful too. Wrinkles will happen inevitably. Botox is just staving them off for a little while. And it makes your face look fake. The kind of wrinkles you get is partially under your control, as laugh lines and frown lines have very different visual effects (the former making one appear much more youthful, energetic and generally jovial). I would encourage a lot of smiling and laughing.
If I were married I'd be dead set against my wife getting botox or such done. It would be her choice, obviously, but that wouldn't mean I'd have to be happy about it.

Yeah I agree. The thing that gets me is this.
When you see somebody who is say 40 years old. You normaly have a good guess at their age range based on many things. Yes of course, wrinkles give your age away, but so does hair style, hair condition, dress sense, the way they carry them selfs.
There are so many ways to gauge somebodys age that when faced with somebody who in everyway, but their face, appears to be lets just say 45 then I'm afraid that the thoughts that pop into my head are not kind.
Nope not 'ohhh she looks hot for her age', or 'my that guy looks good for his age' but more like, 'stupid fuckwit, he looks like a pratt' and the aformentioned, 'shit look at that mutton'
So

I dunno, I just think that it's never really that convincing and often looks kind of fake. And I don't think there's anything wrong with aging. I myself will probably go quite bald, if my mother's father is any indication. I've accepted that. It's not a problem.

If it makes you feel good about your body/self, then why not?Surgery carries a significantly higher risk of dangerous complications than brushing one's hair does.

And I'm not saying it should be illegal or anything. It's people's right to do what they want to their own bodies. But personally I question its effectiveness at making people look "better." It usually just makes them look like they've had plastic surgery.

Not in Australia. They did research and that is the number one concern about getting older. Probably our 'bronzed Aussie' culture doesn't help either.
I get Botox injections for my hyperhydrosis. It's the difference between sweating insanely at all times of the day regardless of my body temperature...and not. Sooo worth it. Plus my drug plan pays 90%. I'd never get it for cosmetic reasons. I am enjoying aging.

Hmm, I dunno. I'm kinda split on this. Personally I've gotten ear reconstruction surgery, jaw reconstruction surgery and a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid). All in an attempt to look "normal" (which failed BTW), and to fit in better.
I do think that breast implants, botoxs, and other cosmetic surgeries are pointless, but I dunno if you'd call what I had cosmetic surgeries.
Maybe this is a sign that our society is too superficial, where women and men feel like they have to manipulate their body through surgeries so that they can be "attractive" to society's standards.

I make a bit of a distinction between reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. To me, there's a bit of a difference in circumstances between someone who had surgery for breast cancer and so consequently gets an implant to even things out and someone who gets breast implants because they just want bigger tits.

Indeed! I saw on TV the other day a woman who has it injected into her eyelid. The reason? To make her lashes appear longer. Bloody hell, since when did mascara stop doing that then?
