Seems Like Palm Beach Just Can't Get It Right.

For those with long enough memories, in the 2006 Mid-term elections a Republican congressman representing West Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast of Florida named Mark Foley was forced to resign after it became apparent that he was acting inappropriately with Congressional pages.

His successor, Tim Mahoney, was elected largely on the fact that he promised to be a moral man in the U.S. Congress. Now it turns out that he was carrying on an extra-marital affair, and used both taxpayer and campaign money to hush up his mistress.

Here's the Link (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20081013/Mahoney.Investigation/?cvqh=ITN_probe).

Now, Mahoney has personally asked for a probe. That speaks to something. And the possibility of a person trying to raise a false issue for spite or greed is certainly there. And if it turns out that he did nothing wrong, I wouldn't be surprised. He's supported by a relative of mine in the area, so I've actually met the guy. It was once, but he seemed to be enough of a straight arrow. Granted, I'm not infallible, but I don't think he's at the level of Foley.

So, thoughts? Opinions on Rep. Mahoney (D-FL)? Or better yet, opinions on those wacky people in Florida? They've gotten us into enough SNAFUs, and there was the 2000 Recount FUBAR. And Mahoney's current Republican opponent is apparently the son of greyhound racetrack owner (or something, my knowledge is mostly heresy). Maybe we should just sink the state and go back to 49.

Huh. On the one hand, I'm not surprised that a politician would have an extramarital affair -- they probably have them at the same rate as other humans, which is to say all the time -- but on the other hand, the timing of the charge is suspicious.

Given that he didn't deny the affair, I'm assuming he had it, but that he didn't pay hush money.

And given the silly, silly state of politics in my own state, I'm hesitant to consign Florida to the sea (faster than rising sea levels and poor land management will get it there without my help, at any rate.)

I could imagine that conversation. :)

Or he paid it out of pocket instead of embezzling it.

Mahoney's opponent is Tom Rooney, son of Art Rooney, founder of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.

There's a certain irony in the OP being about Florida, it looks like a dick and has few qualms about screwing other people over on a consistent basis.

Florida is interesting. Not only is it God's waiting room, but it's also Disney World, the South will rise again (in the Northern parts), Miami Vice, the northernmost part of Latin-America, basically a part of Russia (North Miami Beach), battling San Fran for gay capital (South Beach and Key West), Celebrity-paradise (Miami Beach area and islands around the Bay) and Jew-Land 3 (after Israel and New York)...

Interesting place, honestly.

If you recall, Palm Beach also had significant problems with merely voting in an election ini 2000 as well...at least now they seem to be capable of actually marking the tabs on the ballot, even if it's for sexual predators and morons who think paying someone to cover up an affair is an even remotely sensible idea.

I double checked this. Apparently Rooney's the grandson of Art Rooney Sr., via Art Rooney Jr. And for whatever reason, his voting address was the dog track that his dad operates.

Yeah, that.

Hey, going from FUBAR to FUMTU is what I call progress. Take a look at what had been the divebomb of the global economy, and now look at how it's just cratering (thank you John McCain and Dave Letterman). When things go back to the political SNAFUs that are expected, I'm sure this issue will abate.

Wrong: they botched an election again just this past August (http://www.wpbf.com/politics/17340601/detail.html), somehow managing to "lose" thousands of votes (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/politics/content/local_news/epaper/2008/08/31/0831elecrecount.html).
