Make-Up

I recently started using the Body Shop Minerals Foundation. I like it. It's light, doesn't clog my pores, and it looks really natural, which I like. But it takes a lot more effort than my old creme to powder (which they removed). So I'm considering a change.

So what types of foundation do other people on here use? Why do you use them? And, do you feel any professional or social pressure to wear make-up in social situations? Do you ever think it's necessary?

I know where I work, just about all the females wear make-up every day. So I feel some pressure to conform in order to present myself as "well-groomed". And I know I'm playing into gender typing here, but it doesn't change facts.

I'm not a fan of those women who coat their skin in so many chemicals that they need to chisel it off at the end of the day. I'm more of a fan of natural beauty than face paints, but hey, if you don't go overboard I'm sure you'll look lovely (not that I know what you look like, just being polite - ignore that camera near your house, by the way :p).

As for your problem, I'm afraid that makeup isn't one of my areas of expertise. I just felt like opining. Carry on!

The cheapest one in the store. While I'm there, I also purchase a clean trowel to apply it with.

Because otherwise I look like a creature from a horror film. Its necessary to avoid people going "dude, what the fuck is that?".

I don't mean to pry, but why is that?

I'm prone to acne and blackheads, so if I am going to wear make-up I need something that's not pore clogging.

Blackheads, huge dark shadows under eyes, and a combination of ridiculously pale skin which serves to highlight a small facial hair problem. Its just as well I've got my wonderful intellect and shining personality to compensate for these problems. Anyway, love to chat, but I've just got to get rid of the queue of eligible bachelors outside my door. Their pleas for immediate sexual intercourse are giving me a headache :p

I buy the cheapest make-up products becaue I'm a student and thus somewhat financially challenged.

Ah, I remember those days. Except I didn't have the exceptionally pale skin; I had the kind which could supply Macca's for a decade.

Okay, I wear Clinique's stay-matte sheer pressed powder oil free in Stay Buff. I'm too lazy to blend liquid foundation all morning, and my skin tones only need a little help to be even.

I have felt more social pressure not to wear makeup than to wear makeup, but I wear it because I like the way I look when I do.

Please elaborate. Professionally, I would prefer not to wear make up every single day as it affects my oily, oily skin, but I feel compelled to since it's considered part of grooming by most women at my workplace.

I feel social pressure to wear make-up. I only actually cave though for pictures, film or when I'm clowning.

I doubt you want to use what I use but since I order all my clown stuff through Ben Nye I tend to just tack on what I need for 'normal' face too. It's expensive and a bit of a learning curve to work with, but I'm used to it and it's really nice.

I wash off most of my make-up with soap and water then I use Noxzema to rid myself of the rest. It seems to remove every last trace and keep my skin balanced quite nicely. Sometimes the best solutions are the simple ones.

The only make-up that I care about is make-up sex. Which will only ever occur after I apologize and buy her roses/chocolate for an argument that I didn't start, about an issue that I am not at fault for, regarding an action that most of the time I didn't take. And yet, there I am, trying my best to "make-up" every time.

Saint Jade is a grrl? I missed that.

I don't use foundation, because I hate the way it feels, but I do use a spot concealer and powder, both by Prescriptives (give me your palest shade and let it do its worst, Prescriptives!) It's all oil-free, and you can get it custom blended, although I just go with a premixed shade. They also sell this stuff kind of like really thinned down foundation that reflects light and gives you a nice glow, which is good for summer, and an under-eye concealer.

I wear makeup if I'm going out at night (practically never), but almost never to work, except for the aforementioned spot concealer and powder. Maybe a light dusting of blush. I'm just too lazy to put on makeup every day, even though I'm the youngest person at my job and I know makeup makes me look more mature. I figure as long as I'm 5x my students' age and twice as tall, though, I should be good.

I usually use a bit of foundation, as my cheeks tend to look very red otherwise.
And I have to colour my eyebrows, as they are so blond as to be invisible.
Other than that, a bit of eyeliner and that's it really.

I do tend to go for full-out (with eye-shadow and lipstick and everything) when having an occasion for it. It looks nice, but it's too much work for everyday.

I get all makeup from the BodyShop. I just love their stuff.

I have worn make-up less than a dozen times, I think.

I do feel some "pressure" to wear it, in the sense that most women do it and thus it seems to be expected, but I don't care enough to bother with it. It's expensive, it feels icky, it takes time to apply, it smudges or has to be "touched up"...meh. No thanks.

Although, to be fair, I did use an acne cream that had pigment in it to help hide zits back during what I like to call my Explosive Hormone Years. I totally understand the use of make-up to hide blemishes like acne or moles or scars if somebody is embarrassed about them. I just don't get why people who have healthy skin would paint it up with chemicals that are probably going to lead to them having BAD skin! If you've got a nice face to start with, don't fuck it up. :D

At puberty, my skin turned a gorgeous, beaming, healthily glowing, crotchety old curmudgeon that hates just about everything that touches it. The less I put on my skin, the better.

I use only the simplest soaps and moisturizers with the fewest ingredients. I always avoided foundation make up like the plague, until the new powdered minerals hit the market. Those things have been a godsend for evening out my Sicilian black eye circles and the way my skin helpfully turns almost every temporary blemish into a brown spot that takes two months to fade, as well as that one giant freckle that other people politely insist is not noticeable.

Apparently, my skin is okay with me smearing dirt all over it, and that's just fine by me. If it likes the dirt, it can have the dirt.

That said, I hardly ever wear any make up at all. I only put on make up for going out dressed "up," when I want to look glam. I never wear make up to work because the five minutes it takes me to put it on means I would have to get out of bed five minutes earlier, and that shit is NOT happening. Those bastards are lucky I show up at all.

Initially the minerals are a pain because you need to get several colors and mix them to suit your skin tone. I only use the powders and refresh them during the time I'll be needing to be made up. I don't use the creams, because my skin might rebel.

I'm 45 and genetically lucky because good, resilient skin runs in my family. When my grandmother lay dying in the hospital, the nurses, seeking to express sympathy, asked us how old she was, and when we said "82", they were like, "Are you shitting me?" because her skin was so flawless. She really did look at least 20 years younger than she was.

I know I don't look my age, compared to other 45-year-old women I've seen, and I know how lucky I am, and I do not screw around with my skin. I just eat a healthy diet, drink a lot of water, get a lot of sleep, and use the fewest, most natural products I can just to counteract specific environmental conditions (like dry air from winter heating).

My make up routine consists of spot layering of mineral powders to even out, but not eliminate, those Sicilian circles, some eye shadow, black mascara, and a transparent lip color. And even that, I usually can't be bothered to do.

I don't like make-up, but I do typically wear concealer and powder anyway, because I'm paranoid about the acne scars left over from my oh-so-fun teenage years. The few people who've seen said scars unconcealed assure me that they're barely visible, but to me they still look like hideous monstrosities that dominate my entire face, so concealer is a must if I am to go out in public without feeling like small children will run away from me in terror. I basically never wear what I perceive as "unnecessary" makeup, though - eye shadow, eye liner, blush, mascara, lipstick, all that stuff.

I was perhaps unclear earlier when I said I didn't wear make-up often, what I meant was that I wear mascara and lip gloss daily........but none of the other stuff unless I'm being photographed or speaking or clowning.

I don't really see it as "make-up" but I guess it is. Being a natural blonde, I have to do the mascara otherwise my eyes look......naked. The lipgloss is just for fun though, I doubt it adds anything to my appearance.

I've worn makeup one time, but it wasn't my idea. I was about to go on TV for a little blurb of something, and and about 10 minutes before I was to go on I was attacked by four women with various frightening looking tools and they drew all over my face and threw dust on it.

Saint Jade is a grrl? I missed that.
Me too. I think it's because the name reminds me of some punk guy, Saige Dragon I think.

My skin was okay during puberty but is bad now. Bah. I also do have a generally uneven skin tone plus those lovely Sicilian (well, just plain Italian, in my case) dark under-eye circles Muravyets mentioned.

So I do use make-up when I leave the house. Concealer (Shiseido, discontinued, so I had to stock up on eBay), powder make-up (Shiseido Pureness Matifying Compact Oil-Free), rouge (Shiseido & random drug store), and mascara (my fave has been discontinued so I'm still hunting for something new; Clinique High Impact is working okay so far).

I don't really look painted because the make-up is just powder and too light to completely cover up everything, so it's not mask-y at all.

I hardly ever use lipstick these days, I don't like the way it looks on me. (Like with jewelry, though, I go through phases with make-up, so there've been times when I've liked and used lipstick or eye shadow a lot).
Also most lipsticks dry out my lips, so that sucks.

I'm not sure about the mineral make-up. It sounds great so I bought some Bare Escentuals stuff some time ago but it wasn't very great - didn't cover up anything, not even after endless minutes of applying it again and again and again, plus made me look strangely shiny (not "healthy glow" but really "strangely shiny"). I'll probably try another brand eventually but since Bare Escentuals seems to be the original/best/whatever I'm a bit wary.

I also hate having dry-feeling lips, so I tend to go for lip glosses or tinted lip balms. I like that they are transparent color, so you don't have to be as careful putting them on. I have gone to a bit of trouble to practice applying lip color neatly without looking, so I can touch up after eating without having to whip out lots of equipment (you know, a mirror) or leave the table. My mom hates it when I do that -- she gets all "Bitch, quit showing off!"

I don't wear makeup for two reasons: I'm not very good at it (and have the horrible prom pix to prove it) and even when well-applied it doesn't make me look any better. I just look like a very plain person with makeup smeared on them.

I suppose I'm not really makeup-free, I do use concealer and anti-zit stuff when I've got a zit.

Since I have the boiled-cabbage-white skin of my proud Irish ancestors, I do tend to wash out entirely in pictures, but I solve this by avoiding cameras. Much less hassle.

I did feel some pressure to wear it at work since it was so standard for women in my workplace, but I couldn't be arsed.

I don't really feel social pressure either way on wearing makeup most of the time. Nobody at my workplace really cares. But I like the way I look with it on - particularly eye makeup, but the foundation helps even out my skin tone, so it's nice too.

They make plain and tinted lip balms with herbal extracts that can have a little tingle. I liked their red tinted peppermint-menthol lip balm that's like having the York Peppermint Pattie sensation on your lips and, supposedly, helps create the impression of fresh breath because every time you talk, you're puffing peppermint into the air from the natural peppermint oil in the balm (it's really a gel).

That's them!

I've only bought the lip balms, though.

:D My only quibble with them is that I find the applicator a little messy.

The company's skin care products are very good. I'm kind of a connoisseur of moisturizers because I really need them -- I live in a high-pollution zone and my apartment house has forced air heat, which turns it into a convection oven every winter -- but there are so few I can use without breaking out.

Yeah, when I have one, I have to periodically clean it off, which is a little annoying.

Makes sense. I actually neglected skin care for a long time. I was so worried that any moisturizer (or sunblock) would make my face break out that I just avoided them altogether. Of course, my skin was horribly dry and any little blemish became a rather obvious discoloration (well, obvious to me anyways). I don't think my skin is particularly hard to take care of - I just never knew how to do it!

My back and legs, on the other hand, get horribly, horribly dry in the winter. I seriously have to cover myself in lotion every day during the winter to keep from itching like crazy. It's part of the reason I've become such a fan of Bath and Body Works. I can smell different every day! =)

But a friend of mine recently became a Mary Kay consultant. So I've been buying my makeup and stuff from her. I can get discounts and help support her that way. =)

I don't like the taste of make-up.

Yuck.

That's just like fake boobs.

Good from far, far from good.

This stuff sounds awesome. I want.

I avoid cameras too. I always end up looking really smashed due to high sensitivity to the flash.

I wear Mary Kay mineral powder foundation.

I like it.

I don't really feel social pressure either way on wearing makeup most of the time. Nobody at my workplace really cares. But I like the way I look with it on - particularly eye makeup, but the foundation helps even out my skin tone, so it's nice too.

My mother would freak out if she saw me go to work without makeup on, but she lives in another city, so that's ok. =)

I love the way I look in make-up too. It's not a confidence thing, I just like feeling a bit special and groomed. I used to use Mary Kay, but the lady moved away without telling me and never contacted me again. So that was the end of my relationship with them.

My brothers both wear more makeup than me. I only learned how to use eye-liner, mascara and eye shadow when I was about 19. It's the only makeup I ever wear, and only very, very rarely. Foundation? Jesus on a stick no! I don't care what kind you're using, it feels disgusting and it's totally unecessary. My skin looks just fine all on its own.

No lipstick. Ever. Can't stand the smell or feel of it.

Oh and no. I don't feel pressured to wear makeup.

I don't even feel pressured to wear pants sometimes.

No, I just honestly don't understand makeup.

Or pants.

Right leg first? Or left? Then I try to do both at once and I fall over.

While I'm on the floor, I get drunk.

Lol. Well, at least you can't fall any further from the floor.

I would love to delete pants from my ensemble. Unfortunately, our very conservative neighbours might complain, and my mother is head of the Body Corporate.

My version of daily makeup is clear, plain ol' chapstick.

I didn't learn about applying my own makeup until after high school. I wore it religiously for 2 years, until a guy friend whom I have a lot of respect for pulled me aside and said I was always stunning, but I looked better all-natural.

I really don't feel pressured anymore. In fact, my skin was starting to get acne, and has completely cleared up.

I do wear it sometimes, but only when I want to.

Hmmm ... I'm going to check if I can have an avatar now. If so, ill put up a pic of me without makeup.

Same problem here--German-Irish skin that goes white under a flash, far too pale to accommodate more than the gentlest application of makeup. I wear a subtle brown eyeshadow combo sometimes, especially if I have to have my picture taken, because my eyelids are orange. I don't know why. :(
