You did read the Snopes article, right ? The artists really do dislike the use of their music to support McCain, have given an interview similar to the letter, and one did indeed pledge to donate part of the royalties from it to the Obama campaign.
The "old fart" letter itself is not real, but it is based on a real one and quite probably accurately reflects he actual feelings of the artists.
