For some, it's mac n cheese, for others a hot bowl of chicken soup. I just fried up some tostones for lunch.
What's your favorite "mmmm baby, that's good, I'm home!" food?

I have a couple, depends on how much time I have.
1. Creamed tuna on toast - most people think this is gross and I have to admit, unless I'm in the mood for it, it is.
2. Grilled cheese sandwiches
3. Homemade soup, especially New England Clam Chowder or Potato Leek Soup (I do not puree it!).
4. Hershey bars - yes, I know, inferior chocolate, but this is comfort food.

White cheddar macaroni and cheese, definitely
Cereal and toast is my other comfort meal. I *love* cereal.
Lastly, grilled ham and cheese sandwiches... ever since my first year of uni. The cafe in the SUB made the greatest grilled ham and cheese, and when I was having a bad day, I'd get it for lunch. My ex could always tell how my morning had gone by what I was eating. ;)

Malted grain toasted bread with marmite, cut into strips so you can dip it in houmous - very nice finger food indeed. Better still if you get the sort of houmous topped with green pesto.
Decent milk chocolate (by decent, I mean one that doesn't contain any added vegetable fats to bulk it out and make it cheaper). Chew a piece slowly and let it melt in your mouth - and then take a sip of milk. It mixes with the melted chocolate in your mouth - best of both really.
But simple things really are the best. If I'm in the mood for something savoury, then nothing really beats beef jerky. The only thing that comes close is marmite on buttered toast.
If I need something sweet, I have in my cupboard a supply of sweetened condensed milk in squeezy tubes. It's got the consistency of toothpaste, but has just about the opposite effect. Tastes nice though, and gives a sugar rush to boot.

I initially read this as "lacking decent hippie" and was really confused. Doesn't every University have a quota of at least 1 guy hanging out on the quad in paisley/tie-dye/corduroy, smelling of patchouli and trying to get people to love the Earth?
"Chippie" makes more sense. Why not start your own? All you have to do is keep the deans from finding out you've set up a fryolator in your dorm room. Bribe the right people and you're set.:D

It's generally grated plantain spread over a banana leaf or parchment paper, filled with shredded flavored pork and maybe some raisins, or pine nuts, wrapped and tied tightly, and boiled until it's SOLID.
A very long and tedious process to make them, but OMG WORTH IT.

When I was still living at home, my favorite part about Halloween was the roasted pumpkin seeds my mother would make. Greasy, salty, slightly burnt and hot from the oven, they were like someone took the best aspects of sunflower seeds, potato chips and roasted peanuts.
I also remember her beef stew, which I still miss even though it wasn't really "good" (I've had much better stews since leaving home).
Now I sound like some sort of fucking women's home journal or soppy memoir, and it's all everybody else's fault but mine.

Though I have to wonder how you do it since the whole POINT of the tomato soup is to have the liquid soak the bread.

I can't stand people who put ketchup on eggs or mac and cheese. It's just...wrong.
I usually dip, then take a bite, then dip again, another bite...for the taste more than the sogginess. Though, the only reason I don't use tomato soup is that I've always hated it (who knows? I may like it now...). I still dip in clam chowder all the time.

I can understand why my step-father does it. His mother had a habit of cooking with the scotch bottle to keep her company and didn't notice things like the wind flipping the pages on her cookbook while she cooked. He developed the habit out of self defense.
