Martti Ahtisaari! Congratulations! Now who saw that coming? I didn't...

Who do you think? Are you happy about it?

My guesses were:

I would bet on a longshot: Pastor Bulambo Lembelembe Josué of Congo.

But Hu Jia and/or Gao Zhisheng get good odds too, based in part on the fact that China has subtly threatened Norway with repercussions if that should happen, and the Tianamen square anniversary coming up.

Then again, if we were to go by subtle threats, Lidia Yusupova and/or Svetlana Gannushkina from Russia would be hot candidates as well.

Well, there's 164 persons and 33 organization nominated so...

I like how China calls tries to make Hu Jia look bad by stating that he was convicted for "subverting state power". That just makes China look bad.

Hypnotoad for the prize

George Bush should have been nominated and won it after all he brought peace to Iraq. Hey stranger people have won it for worse like Kissinger who won it for bombing the shit out of Cambodia.

But perhaps we should look at the list and see which one made a movie recently and give it to them.

Shouldn't they have waited until his work is done? I mean, seriously, it's not like he actually fixed Kosovo. Temporarily being out of ammunition is not the same as peace.

I hadn't heard of him before, but after reading up on him, I think he deserved it, big time. Not that the others weren't worthy, but this guy has mediated four major conflicts.

Martti Ahtisaari! Congratulations! Now who saw that coming? I didn't...

He should've gotten it last year for his Aceh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aceh) negotiations or years earlier for his work in Namibia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Namibia), not to mention Northern Ireland or CMI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_Management_Initiative)

Getting it after his work in Kosovo seems to be a bit politicized selection.

Yes, a bit...This year the unfinished Kosovo conflict got too much attention compared to if he had won the prize last year after helping to resolve the situation in Aceh.

Now it was practically targeted against Russia (and Serbia, naturally) and badly timed overall considering the peace process in Kosovo is not yet complete.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2008 to Martti Ahtisaari for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts. These efforts have contributed to a more peaceful world and to "fraternity between nations" in Alfred Nobel’s spirit.

Throughout all his adult life, whether as a senior Finnish public servant and President or in an international capacity, often connected to the United Nations, Ahtisaari has worked for peace and reconciliation. For the past twenty years, he has figured prominently in endeavours to resolve several serious and long-lasting conflicts. In 1989-90 he played a significant part in the establishment of Namibia’s independence; in 2005 he and his organization Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) were central to the solution of the complicated Aceh question in Indonesia. In 1999 and again in 2005-07, he sought under especially difficult circumstances to find a solution to the conflict in Kosovo. In 2008, through the CMI and in cooperation with other institutions, Ahtisaari has tried to help find a peaceful conclusion to the problems in Iraq. He has also made constructive contributions to the resolution of conflicts in Northern Ireland, in Central Asia, and on the Horn of Africa.

Although the parties themselves have the main responsibility for avoiding war and conflict, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has on several occasions awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to mediators in international politics. Today Ahtisaari is an outstanding international mediator. Through his untiring efforts and good results, he has shown what role mediation of various kinds can play in the resolution of international conflicts. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to express the hope that others may be inspired by his efforts and his achievements.

<snip>

I'm not saying mr Ahtisaari didn't deserve the prize - Heck, he's hailed somewhat as a saint in Namibia for his effort at their independence - or that's what I tried to point out on the last page.

I'm merely suggesting that the timing wasn't good at all.

The Nobel prize just doesn't mean what it used to... In pseudo-sciences, like economics, it's a measure of how much the candidate has sucked up to the committee. Same with the peace prize, except that hating the United States counts for more than how wet one's nose gets.

Umm, Al Gore racked up the prize last year. Jimmy Carter in 2002. Jody Williams in -97

That's anti-USA to you?

As for this year's winner Ahtisaari, well he is very NATO friendly and USA supports his (unfinished) Kosovo plan, so it couldn't be said that he's anti-USA.
