Riots have broken out in the mixed city of Acre after an Israeli Arab man drove his car during the Yom Kippur religious holiday, Israeli reports say.
Dozens of cars and shops were damaged as hundreds of people took to the streets, Haaretz newspaper reported.
For Jews, Yom Kippur is a sombre day of fasting, during which it is considered offensive to drive in much of Israel.
The Arab man was reportedly attacked by youths who said he was making noise intentionally, the paper said.
Most of Israel comes to a standstill on Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement - the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Streets are deserted except for a few pedestrians, cyclists and skateboarders, during the 25-hour fast which this year began on Wednesday at 1640 (1440 GMT).
The Arab man is reported to have said he was simply driving to a property he owned in the eastern part of the city.

So, in essence, it's a religious offence to drive a car on that day, but rioting and burning shops is absolutely ok?

Actually, it's not okay. Here's a quote from the rest of the article:
"This is a very serious incident that the city of Acre has not seen the likes of in recent years and we will deal with all the rioters and those who take the law into their own hands with an iron fist," the head of the Acre police station, Chief Superintendent Avi Edri, told Haaretz.

That article is wrong... At least where I live (Eilat), on Yom Kippur all the kids go out to the streets and start making lots of noise by playing with bicycles and skateboards and whatever (and yelling a lot in the progress). It's mostly worse than when there's cars out. Maybe it's different in more religious neighbourhoods, but they're always crazy and I'm just glad I don't live in one (I'd imagine they'd complain that I dare use my computer on the Sabbath and who knows what else).

Actually, it's not okay. Here's a quote from the rest of the article:
Except since gangs from both groups (Jewish and Arab) were involved, how much do you want to bet that the iron fist will only land on certain ethnicities while totally avoiding others regardless of damage done?
After all, an Israeli Arab goes on a rampage with a bulldozer, his neighborhood gets knocked down after he's killed. An Israeli Jew assassinates the Israeli Prime Minister, and they're thinking about releasing him from prison.

I'm not going to get into that conflict. Frankly, both sides are equally guilty and I would like to see the U.S. pull its nose out so the UN can handle it as it should: Sanction Israel back to the stone age and deliver enough peacekeeping forces to make any trouble maker turn their pants brown at the mere thought of trying to do something.

Might work, so long as you can shrug off the whining of "antisemitism" that's sure to follow.
For this particular conflict though, would be much better to clap the offenders in mixed race chains, and put them to work repairing the damage they caused, with shock treatment for any trouble makers in the gang.
Show that you're really serious about that law and order, and that you're an equal opportunity iron fist.

Much as I hate to come in and mess with your orgy of religion bashing I think we should apply a little thought to this.
This is a part of the world where you have 2 ethnic groups who often use religion as an excuse to pummel each other. Without religion, they'd still pummel each other, just for some other contrived excuse.
In the article it said:
"The Arab man was reportedly attacked by youths who said he was making noise intentionally, the paper said."
1)Youths. Not rabbis. How you can look at this and see it as somehow representing the mindset of all Jewish people or, even worse, all Abrahamic Religions (you know who you are) is ridiculous.
2)Was this guy making noise intentionally, in order to antagonize the Jewish people? Maybe.
"The Arab man is reported to have said he was simply driving to a property he owned in the eastern part of the city."
Anybody believe that? Show of hands, please. Yeah, me neither, because let's close our eyes and picture what's happening...
It's Yom Kippur in Acre. According to the article: "Streets are deserted except for a few pedestrians, cyclists and skateboarders, during the 25-hour fast..." so it's quiet. No automobile traffic. Not much foot traffic. Anybody driving a car would be able to cruise along at a pretty good clip.
Now imagine the youths. Where were they? What were they doing? Were they in their homes, fasting, quietly contemplating? Here comes this Arab guy in his car and We're supposed to believe dozens of young Jews heard the car, suddenly jumped up from what they were doing, ran downstairs, bolted out into the street, and all got there in time to mess with a car that was cruising along, unimpeded by any traffic?
Yeah, I guess Acre is the home of the Israeli Olympic Track Team.
Or maybe these youths were already clumped together, maybe in violation of their religious traditions, and were already out there on the street in a group, loitering around, and were able to pounce on the Arab's car. Maybe they were he skateboarders or bicyclists. That's possible, and hardly the fault of any religion.
Either that, or this Arab driver really WAS driving around antagonizing the local Jews and a group of young hotheads decided to fix his little red wagon.
In either case, to use this as some kind of symbol of why religion sucks is an exercise in propaganda and pretty asinine. It's not like Jews all over the world take to the streets to smash cars on Yom Kippur. If they did, then you'd have a point.

You mean same as the UK was recently asking Ireland to extradite someone to face charges in the UK?
It's European law, membership countries have agreed to it and can ask for extraditions.

Very well.
BEING GERMAN DOESN'T MEAN YOU AGREE WITH THE ACTIONS OF THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT. THUS IT IS RIDICULOUS TO SUGGEST THAT GERMANS CANNOT CRITICISE A COUNTRY FOR ITS FAILURE AT DEMOCRACY SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE GERMAN AND YOU BELIEVE THEIR GOVERNMENT HAS ALSO FAILED AT DEMOCRACY. Why not? USAmericans do it all the time, and their's is a democracy where someone can get elected without actually gaining a majority...
This statement betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the American form of government, specifically its rules governing presidential elections.

I think it'd be analogous to yelling out "LEEEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY JEEEEEEEEEEENKINS" as someone's coffin is being lowered into the grave. Not illegal or anything, but damn people will be pissed at you.
If any of you happened to catch the "Funeral Gank" performed by noted WoW guild <Serenity Now> a couple of years ago, one player complained that it was the equivalent of "running around slapping people at a funeral while yelling "LOL OWNED" and then knocking over the coffin".
I have nothing to add to this discussion, but I thank Ifreann for triggering a happy memory. ^^

A crime is a crime is a crime. The point of such a thing like a European Arrest Warrant is that extradition applications (which are time consuming and cumbersome) are drastically speeded up. EU states obey the same laws under Justice, Freedom and Security - otherwise they wouldn't have signed up to it.

From you, I wear it as a badge of honor.
From someone bitching about censorship, and saying that a person who merely lives in that country is guilty of it and therefore has no right to say anything (aka, censorship), not so much.
Now which policy's would you be reminding us of? The ones before 1964 or the ones that have been since or some of the ones going on right now? Inn either case no side has done a good job of it but this should be left for another thread. Plus I think Arridia is nearby.
FeO has pretty much said Cabra IS her country, and is responsible for the censorship thereof and therefore censored from expressing an opinon; I want to know if that means that he personally is responsible for the Lost Generation, the oppression of and the damage done to the Aborigines in his country?
It seems a perfectly reasonable question. If Cabra is her country, is he not HIS country?
And if he is his country, then hadn't he better look to the beam in his own eye re: intolerance before criticizing the mote in his neighbor's?

Except since gangs from both groups (Jewish and Arab) were involved, how much do you want to bet that the iron fist will only land on certain ethnicities while totally avoiding others regardless of damage done?
And, like the ceaseless churning of the waves....
Police have arrested an Israeli Arab man who sparked four days of rioting in the town of Acre by driving in a Jewish area during the Yom Kippur holiday.
Tawfik Jamal was remanded in custody on Monday for three days for reckless endangerment, speeding and harming religious sensitivities, police said.
