In the file of news that makes you chuckle, the local office of republican house representative John Boehner. When staffers noticed the package was leaking a strange, oily substance, they called authorities who alerted the bomb squad.

What did they find?

After an X-ray analysis, investigators determined the package contained bacon.

Yes, bacon. Apparently it was a protest against "pork barrel spending" and a rather clever one as well, when you think about it.

So, to prevent this from becoming all spammy, what's the most creative, legal protest methods you've encountered?

I just read about a great one: The yippies at the stockmarket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yippies):

Abbie Hoffman and a group of Yippies managed to get into a tour of the New York Stock Exchange. They threw hundreds of dollar bills from the balcony of the visitors' gallery to the floor below. The stock exchange shut down as wealthy men in suits trampled each other to get dollar bills. The visitors' gallery was closed until a glass barrier could be installed, to ensure that it never happened again.

Many years ago, some syndicated radio jocks ecouraged listeners to mail tea bags to their Congresspeople to protest against Congress voting a pay raise for themselves. I think it was during the 1990s recession, but I can't get the details :(. The only article that mentions it that Google came up with requires me to register as an academic researcher to get access -- some uni archive.

Anyway, being a big fan of the American Revolution and currently living Boston, I found it amusing. I am of the opinion that Americans should mail tea to Congress regularly.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot -- Congress received so many tea bags so quickly that they did NOT give themselves a raise that year.

When fans of the TV show Jericho mailed CBS several thousand pounds of peanuts to protest the show being taken off the air after they ended the first season with a cliff-hanger. I found the show to be somewhat enjoyable, but I never took part in the protest... It did work, however, as they brought it back with a second season and they ended it there with a real ending.
