Hehe, a few years ago, I posted a whole list of wacky and out of this world names for kids on this other forum. *giggles like a little school-girl*

Any name that *doesn't* scream "my father is a half-wit/Californian."
Some of the names I've seen out here (present in the remainder of the country I'm sure, but *especially* here) have been stunningly bad. I'm not even going to give examples - not because I don't want to offend, but because someone might actually *like* one of them, which would do nothing for my headache.
I wanted to name my son Phineas for years after I read A Separate Peace, only to be thwarted by Julia Roberts. Bitch.
I like Niklas or Nikolai for a boy, the latter especially because I like the diminutive Kolya.
I have a name I want for a girl, but I'm not going to tell because as far as I know, no celebrities have ruined it for me yet. :p

I agree. Eris is an awesome name for a girl.
i would have a naming party and roll the sacred dice, for their birth names, just as they would again for their life names when they reached adolescence. on most of lananara that is pretty much the tradition.
one thing we don't do there, or again most places there, asciduously attempt to avoid doing, is to name any person, place or thing, 'after' any other person place or thing.
(at a naming party, everyone invited rolls the sacred dice, with their individual resaults statistically intigrated to come up with the naming algorythym and thus, ultimately the name itself, which is simply a short but as unique as possible string of otherwise meaningless sounds. where duplications DO occur, which of course is inevitable once population reaches a certain level, locatives are used rather then patrinymics, to distinguish otherwise duplicates from each other. none of this holy holy great gandpa the 33rd nonsense)
a ouija board would be another good way of doing this

I'll go with Granny Weatherwax on that one : "Always pick a name that you can scrub the kitchen floor in, if needs be"
I think place names for kids are ridiculous, and fancy Greek or fantasy names only invite abuse by the other kids.
The names my BF and I have been tossing around are Rebecca, Emma, Dorothy and Rachel for girls, and Martin, Frederic and Tim for boys.

As much as I agree with this statement, if I ever have twins, it's going to be almost impossible not to name them Castor and Pollux.
Emma,... Rachel for girls
Agree. Also Anna.

very slightly off-topic, but how long do you think Brad Pitt's kid, Shiloh, is going to be in school before someone makes a spoonerism of his name?
I'm betting about 3 minutes.

Lithuanians named Death Giltinė, deriving from word "gelti" (to sting). Giltinė was viewed as an old ugly woman with long blue nose and deadly poisonous tongue. The legend tells that Giltinė was young, pretty and communicative until she was trapped in a coffin for seven years. The goddess of Death was a sister of the goddess of Life and Destiny, Laima, symbolising the relationship between beginning and end.
Later, Lithuanians adopted the classic Grim Reaper with a scythe and black robe.

Well, I don't really like children and can't have them, so the chances of me being able to choose a name for a child are negligible. But if I stole/adopted a chlld that didn't already have a name, I'd probably go with Alex, Casey or Jamie.
Alex
After meeting me, most people refuse to name their child Alex :(

I'm not really interested in having kids, but my boyfriend is. One of the ways he has attempted to win me over is by telling me I can pick the names. He would like two kids, so our firstborn will be Raptor Bonesaw and our secondborn will be Bom-omb.

In my experience, most babies explode to various degrees no matter how carefully you handle them. I once described my brother as "kind of like a waterballoon" to a relative because Baby Brother so often leaked or expelled fluids.

Hehe. Man I'm so glad my little sis wasn't like that. Or maybe she was...hmm....
Anyway, this just makes me wonder if the solution to overpopulation should be baby-chucking contests.

People often have a go at celebrities who pick odd names for their children saying "oh that kid is going to get bullied!" but I don't see what's so wrong with Brooklyn or Apple or whatever. I remember hearing a discussion along those lines and was just about to open my mouth to protest when it was mentioned that someone had named their daughter Kenya. Maybe it's my contrarian nature or just the fact it's a nice name but ever since then I've been very keen on that name if I have a daughter (who would be mixed race - I think the racial context is quite important in that particular name)
