So, which one are you? Are you Extroverted, or Introverted?

If you can't tell, new here, or been living under a rock since....however long I've been posting here, I am very Introverted, at least in real life.

Now while I'm not disputing what you say, I'd consider myself introverted even under circumstances where I'm not acting it. This is because getting myself to go out and grab people's attention is hard work for me, while sitting alone in my room drawing, reading, or doing something else comes naturally to me.

So, which one are you? Are you Extroverted, or Introverted?
It's a very simplified division. I'm both, of course.

MBTI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MBTI), for instance, distinguishes functions being extrovert and introvert, such as sensing, intuition, thinking and feeling, all separately.

While people may have overall Ext/Int leaning, the difference in social behavior between two mostly-extroverts or mostly-introverts can be much greater than between an extrovert and an introvert.

It's also a blurry distinction. For instance, I know that I'm a very pronounced NT type - Intuition, Thinking - but which of them specifically, different tests yield different results, mostly ENTP or INTJ, but also a high % for INTP and ENTJ.

Note how the two main 'competing' types are E and I, mostly-extrovert and mostly-introvert. The only clear distinction is nearly-zero Sensing and Feeling (all weighed under 10%) with clear dominance of Intuition and Thinking, but other than that, hard to tell. Probably for MBTI purposes I qualify as mostly-extrovert.
On the other hand, I tend to prefer a small circle of friends to a crowd, which is mostly introvert in the commonplace speak. But is it internal or just upbringing? When I'm 'under influence', I go very extrovert (in common tongue) and virtually always become the center of attention, unless there's someone even crazier around.

Depends. What do you call a guy who despises meeting new people, but once you get to know him, will not leave you alone?

That is absolutely an introvert trait. Not much for new friends, but clings to older ones.
Probably the most defining trait of introversion, as either suppressed or extended sociability can be observed in both extroverts and introverts, and is largely formed by experiences.

As for the OP, I chose both. I'm outgoing, and like people but I do need my alone time. I think I'm an outgoing introvert. Or maybe an extrovert that has many solo hobbies.

Is that a real option? I don't think either is a neurosis, you either you more prefer meeting and interacting with people or you more prefer introspection. They may mean something more specific is real psychology, but in the vernacular (i.e., what I say, regardless of its correctness or incorrectness), they seem fairly neutral labels.

I feel your pain, and for a change I don't mean that ironically. There's not much you can do against your autism, since it's hotwired in your brain, but there should be training courses available to improve your social skills. That might help a bit.

introverted, as i need time alone to recharge and feel normal. being with people for long periods exhausts me, especially for people i don't know too well. crowds (eg going shopping) are a nightmare.

Thinking about this further...its very strange in that I am actually quite outgoing and confident with people once I've got to know them, and if suddenly thrown into a situation with loads of new people without having time to think about it first I'm sometimes (though by no means always) ok.

But if I know ahead of the event I'll be meeting new people, I then worry about all the ways I could embarass myself, say something wrong that would make people not like me or whatever...well as I said the consequence of this is stomach problems, not being able to sleep for several days, what might be mild panic attacks (struggle to control breathing, sometimes feeling like I'm going to pass out). And of course its a self-fulfilling prophecy in the sense that because I feel ill and anxious when meeting the people, I'm more likely to make the sort of errors in social interaction that I was worrying about so much, reinforcing in my mind that I can't do it and making me more worried when the next occasion arises, meaning I perform badly then also. The logical thing to do to break the cycle is to stop worrying, as then I might do ok...easier said than done though!!!
