For the love of God, why choose her?!
(though she is preferable to Britney or Paris or many other 'starlets')
British artist Marc Quinn stands with his solid gold sculpture of British supermodel Kate Moss at the British Museum in London, Britain, 02 October 2008. Quinn's 50kg solid gold statue of Moss in yogic pose was unveiled to the public for the first time 02 October. Siren, a GBP1.5 million (1.9 million Euros) solid gold sculpture, is one of several contemporary sculptures in the exhibition Statuephilia.

no reason not to.
the solid gold thing seems like quite the gimmick though. how do you seperate the value of the art from the value of the medium?

Easily. Statues are, in essense, actually worth only the combination of the materials that make them and the artistic value they give to the society. This, being of no artistic value, is only worth the price of the gold.

Now there's one person who does NOT deserve to be a statue.
Probably figured a stick figure like that wouldn't need much gold. Does it have a little coke smear by her nose?

according to the artist, he thinks his efforts alone are worth £500,000: It has a million quid's worth of gold so we have to assume the other half-mill are the time spent making it.
He also thinks it'll be worth more than £10 mill when sold (that was in a different news article which I can't find right now). Not a bad return on investment there.

He could have made the smear out of white gold for added effect.

(though she is preferable to Britney or Paris or many other 'starlets')Cost reasons. If the statue is solid gold, then her being anorexic is going to save material.

Umm don't know about that, the woman obviously has fans, y'know and art being subjective and all.

A solid gold Aretha Franklin, now that's art! Or Dolly Parton, one tit would be more gold than Kate Moss.

I'm surprised he didn't pick Twiggy...

I kinda like it. And I think I want to have Kate Moss's baby.
Do you think that's an authentic replica of the Kate Moss camel toe?

Selling to people who are fanatics and simply want to obsess over their chosen idol is a successful business practice. Japan's particularly managed to capitalize on it. But that doesn't make it art.

Flawed argument. One could easily rip it apart by pulling up every racist, bigotted view from human history and pointing out that the essential subjectiveness of aspects of morality doesn't make those any closer to truly moral any more than the subjectiveness of certain aspects of art would automatically make this particular statue actually be art.

From what I hear the statue is hollow
Whoops. Was reading it in the Daily Mail.

So it's based on the real Kate Moss? :p

I think it would have been better made out of chocolate.
