The Last Samurai...Nazi...

So now that Tom Cruise has firmly established that he's Japanese, he's also claiming to be German.

Or something like that, anyways. I stopped actually caring about Tom because my thetans keep distracting me...

I actually thought the movie got cut, since Tom couldn't find any Germans willing to stop trying to pretend WWII never happened, any Jews willing to pretend it never happened, or any sponsors willing to pretend the movie will actually make any money.

I was living in Japan near when "Last Samurai" was released.

Interestingly enough, the titular role of "Last Samurai" was actually played by Ken Watanabe and a host of Japanese actors.

Tom the Xenu Slayer played the role of an American soldier brought over to train troops.

Personally, I wish they'd concentrated more on Watanabe's character, Katsumoto...maybe they can get him for Battlefield Earth 2: Electric Boogaloo.

So he's Japanese and German. All he needs is an Italian role and he'll collect all of the Big Three Axis Powers. It's like Pokemon, except with war and genocide.

Tom Cruise really workeed hard at milking the audience's emotions in the "Last samurai".
However, the movie was pretty good - definitely a "boys' own" yarn and not a chick flick.
And what was Billy Connolly doing in a serious role?

All the samurai stuff and ninja bits were good.
I don't mind Tom Cruise doing serious roles as long as he doesn't over - act.

You must have missed The Debt Collector. Billy Connolly playing a violent mobster who maims innocent people for a living. Think that sounds like a terrible bit of casting? Guess again.

Ok... quite a lot of things I don't get about this.
1) Why would they talk with German accents? If you want that film to look authentic, let them talk German. They most certainly weren't talking English with German accents back then.
2) Where would you find a German trying to pretend WW II never happened? It's still the most important defining element of German mentality to this day.
3) Why would you need Jews pretending the WW II didn't happen?
3) Who gives a fuck about what parts of history hollywood decides to mis-portrait this time? Surely you don't look at Gone with the Wind when you want to know about the US civil war? It's entertainment, and bad entertainment at that.

They're not seriously discussing whether German accents or a lack thereof are vital to the movie or not, are they?

"While the majority of buzz about the lack of German accents is neutral, the topic is fueling discussion among online audiences. Critics contend that their absence creates a 'lack of cohesiveness' while supporters believe that their inclusion would make the film appear 'cheesy.' There were also numerous users sharing mixed opinions on the topic, stating that while the lack of accents is 'distracting' and anticipate it will 'take some getting used to,' the trailer 'looks amazing' and they intend on seeing the film upon its release."
Sweet fucking crap, they are...

"If they don't replace their 'th's with z's and invert w's and v's then how are we supposed to know they're speaking German!!!"

This is why some opinions should not be gathered from the internet. This is like hearing that people are concerned about the lack of a laugh track on a sitcom. I think a little piece of me died inside...

Exactly. Remembering it is one of the most important aspects of German culture. They remember it well, to learn from it's mistakes, and teach their children never to do such a thing again. Every year they still hold a ceromony remembering those who tried to assassinate Hitler.

Anyways, off topic.

I hate Tom Cruise. He's like a deadly version of Lunatic Goofballs. Well, more deadly. :p

In my experience, Germans like to pretend it never happened. Not in the "we're going to completely ignore it and completely forget it ever happened" kind of way. Just a, "We've learned, we won't do it again, let's not talk about it" sort of way.

As opposed to the Japanese, that embrace it in a weird, guilt-trip induced vacation to Pearl Harbor kind of way.

Wait, what? Japan has always fervently denied any wrong-doing in WW2, going so far as to barely mention it in textbooks other than as that horrible time when they got nuked. Hell, in my experience, you can actually discuss WW2 with most Germans, but a lot of Japanese have it so culturally ingrained into them that Japan was an innocent victim that to imply otherwise is paramount to an assault on their personal character.

Yes, yes they are. Based on a review of discussion at nine movie fan sites. Which doesn't terribly surprise me -- there are movie discussion boards out there that make the boards at IMDb look coherent and insightful by comparison (and therefore make NSG look like the Bloomsbury Group.)

It isn't even a question of personally knowing Japanese and Germans. From my understanding, German law requires schools to teach about WW2, Nazism and the Holocaust. Japanese schools, on the other hand, actively minimize mention of anything but the atom bombs in regards to WW2. There is very much a strong movement in Japanese culture to consciously forget the various brutalities committed all along the East Asian coast.

Why, yes, I believe they were. Seems strange that they have no issues with actual historical events being incorrect, but the lack of German accents they have a gripe about? I don't really understand why they need accents anyways, its not like the Germans spoke English to each other throughout the war anyways. But what do I know?

These accent whiners are obviously utterly stupid.

In a war film, if you have german actors to play the part of germans, let them speak german. When they have to speak english, you get an authentic german accent from the actor.

If you only have english-speaking actors available, let them speak english for goodness sake. Plain english. Adding artificial accents would simply be, well, artificial. Putting on accents, for me at least, makes suspension of disbelief harder, simply because I'm so aware they're putting on bad german accents.

Let them speak english. I doubt it's a good script anyway.

This plot should have been off limits to Cruise. Should have let someone more competent and less egoistic direct a much better movie with the same plot, using real germans. Oliver Hirschbeigel would be a good choice. He did an amazing job with Downfall.

Not only that, but you have had German leaders visit the site of the death camps in Poland in shame for what happened. The Japanese politicians visit the graves of war criminals without any shame for what happened, and when you consider what the Japanese did in Asia, it is more sickening than the Holocaust; and I do apologise to anybody that is offended by that comment, but when you consider incidents such as the Rape of Nanking, Unit 431, the Palawan Massacre, the Death Railway, and so on, you can understand where I come from.

A modern actors grasp of English and their ability to speak it will likely be greater than that of the average Landser from the 40s.
