Another in a long list of reasons why I think Apple is evil.

Actually it's a stupid reason. But I still think Apple is evil.

There were tons of mp3 players around prior to the iPod. the iPod was simply the first one that could hold any decent number of songs (my friend, who got his when I got my second generation ipod [the first that worked with Windows], could hold only 16 songs. I could hold a few hundred.)

The photo in the article is pretty misleading, compare it to the actual sketches on the guy's website.

Why would FOX do that?

This is bullshit. I mean, Star Trek had communicators, does that mean Roddenberry invented cellphones? Of course not.

Even if it can be proven they [the drawings] where created in 1979, it's still an incredibility weak argument. As stupid as the whole Barry Potter thing a few years back.

(also, where the fuck has he been for the last 28 years? Surely he would have brought it up sooner)

He was waiting for Ipod to hit it big, sue Mac and Steve Jobs, and hope to settle out of court because he's hoping the frivolous lawsuit would put a black mark on Mac and Ipod.

Not to mention it was dreamt up in an age where 8-Track Tapes were probably the most advanced media playback system ever devised and modems were very low baud and the domain of military and academic systems. If it had been worked on at that age, it would be a very bulky and cumbersome device prone to shoddy shortcomings not to mention questionable playback quality.

And any chance Kramer would have of suing anyone is long gone — his British patent for the PIXYS and IXI expired in 1988.

the good ol' Creative models with a built in HDD would beg to differ. it was big and bulky, but i had a friend long before ipods came out who had his whole (and rather extensive) music collection on one of those

How could he possibly and feasibly have the ability to make something like that back then. Shit, the gameboy came out 10 years later, and that was three times the size of this.

He prob thought that since Star Trek had hand-held communicators, surely they can make a portable music device.

Also, he was a Visionary dammit! Little things like feasibility and technology are the work of the minions not people like him! He's here to say, others are there to do. Even it does take them 30 years to do.

This is bullshit. I mean, Star Trek had communicators, does that mean Roddenberry invented cellphones? Of course not.
but there is a standing agreement between the Roddenberry estate and Paramont that if anyone invents it, they will allow them to use the name. so if you make a phaser gun... you can call it a phaser, after getting it patented... that is.

the sketch doesn't indicate side. for all we know, it's probably the same size as the old gameboys. the earphone jack would probably be the standard size jack and you can estimate the size from that.

RhynoD? Meh. Remember, on NS I carefully cultivate ambiguity around my race, gender, and nationality. Choosing a male-sounding name could possibly be another part of that ambiguity. Or not.

I could be a 20-year-old black man from Ceredigion who lives in Manitoba.

Or not.

One part of this post is true. Guess which.

the Creative Nomad Jukebox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Creative_Nomad_Jukebox_(DAP).jpg) (which is the one i was talking about) was launched around November 2000, as far as i can tell http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:ffO_FsB1ooAJ:www.mp3newswire.net/stories/2000/nomadreview.html+Creative+Nomad+Jukebox&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=8&gl=uk

this was not Creative's first mp3 player by any means

the first iPod was launched in October 2001 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipod#Models

The first mass-produced DAP was created in 1997 by SaeHan Information Systems, which domestically sold its “MPMan” player in the middle of 1998.[2] The South Korean company then licensed the players to Eiger Labs which distributed them—now branded as Eiger Labs MPMan F10—to the North American market during the summer of 1998.[3] The flash-based players were available in 16 MB storage capacity.

The Rio PMP300 from Diamond Multimedia was introduced in September 1998, a few months after the MPMan. It was a success during the holiday season, with sales exceeding expectations.[4] Interest and investment in digital music were subsequently spurred from it.[5] Because of the player's notoriety as the target of a major lawsuit, the Rio is erroneously assumed to be the first DAP.[6]

In 1998, Compaq developed the first hard drive based DAP using a 2.5" laptop drive. It was licensed to HanGo Electronics (now known as Remote Solution), which first sold the PJB-100 (Personal Jukebox) in 1999. The player had an initial capacity of 4.8 GB, which was advertised to be able to hold 1200 songs.[7]
