I never really smoked cigars, but having just smoked a Black & Mild, I am now interested in exploring the world of cigars.

What do you suggest I try?

Coheed Blacks and Olivas are my favorite. Romeo and Juilettes are good as well, especially if you havent had many cigars before.

Nooo! Stop! Cigars are evil cancerous poison sticks! Stooooooooooop!

...

Naw seriously, I don't know much about cigars, but nice to hear you've picked up a new interest.

Just hope you're fully aware of the health risks, and as long as you don't light up near me, you'll be fine.

No, dont inhale cigars. You puff them and blow the smoke out. Cigars are more for the flavor then a "buzz".

Inhaling a cigar will make you sick quickly.

Hoyo de Monterrey was the first 'real' cigar I smoked that made me realize why you don't get cigars from the bottom of the cigarette shelf in the supermarket.

My favorite is the Aurturo Fuente Exquisitos Maduro wrap. I don't really like big ring sizes, and long cigars can be too much some times.

I recently had a Cuban cigar and am stunned at the difference.

I also smoke Schimmelpinnick Media cigars (apparently named after the Dutch Webster...who knew?) They're machine wrapped cigars that are the same size as a cigarette so you can have a cigar with the cigarette smokers without being left outside for another 30 minutes while you finish...

Don't use a lighter unless it's one of those torch dealies (and not just a lighter turned up real high)-use wooden matches. Some believe that it's best to 'warm' the cigar with the flame first, then hold the flame a bit away from the tip and draw it in while gently turning the cigar to make sure it is lit evenly. You might want to blow gently on the end to even the burn out.

This is also important.

Ive also been told not to ash, and let the ash just fall off naturally, as ashing can cause it to lose some flavour. Ive never noticed a difference, but its worth mentioning.

First of all, get an actual cigar. Black&Milds are just floor sweepings that are sold to gang-bangers because they don't know any better.

Secondly, nowhere is 'you get what you pay for' more accurate than with cigars. You want a good cigar, you're going to have to spend a little money. I suggest the Thompson Cigar Company. You can order humidors and accessories from them as well as cigars, and they're generally pretty resonable, price wise. (http://www.thompsoncigar.com/default.aspx)
They even have reasonably priced samplers for beginning cigar smokers to let you figure out what you like and don't like.

Let's see, what else...oh, trim it with a cutter, not a pocket knife. And light it with a wooden match, not a chemical lighter. Matches preserve the taste of the cigar.

I've said this a thousand times, for all you know I could be some 63-year old pedophile, going on here claiming that I'm only 14, heck, I could just be trolling this whole time, actually being a Communist, smoking a cigar right now!

But you don't know that for sure.;)

You can buy 20 of them in a bag for just under $10. The heinous smoke produced is guaranteed to offend everyone in the vicinity.

Me and a friend split a box of 50. The cost: $17. Those things offend even the strongest chain smoker, and God help you if you inhale because those "non-tobacco ingredients" are going to hit your lungs like a hurricane.

The Maduros are especially evil looking.

Try La Gloria Cubana... Good quasi-Cuban cigar (Cuban company/tobacco but it's made in the Dominican Republic)... Not that expensive either.

Then you should be grateful that you don't work in a casino. I've worked at both tribal casinos in CT, and at both places have had cigar smoke blown in my face intentionally by patrons. I feel sorry for dealers, as they're stuck at their assigned table. At least I (as a slot attendant) was able to walk away.

Yeah, that's the thing I don't get. If I smoke, I make an effort to ask people nearby if it bothers them...for some reason, there are assholes that don't seem to believe in common courtesy, but I guess that exists everywhere.

The best cigars come from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.

Avoid brands that are knockoffs of cuban brands, and avoid macanudos.

Don't pay a whole lot of attention to Cigar Aficionado magazine payola. Your best bet is to find a nice local tobacconist and try different things.

You can't go wrong with anything from the Ashton, La Aurora, Arturo Fuente or Padron cigar makers.

My two cents:

Go to a well frequented tobacconist. Even the best cigar becomes dung if stored improperly and/or for a long time. In a real tobacco shop they can also help you decide what to buy. If you hang around a while try to find out what the owner is smoking. Cohiba or Montecristo should be tried at least once in a lifetime.

The rest has been said.

A little perversion. Humidize the cigar with a little Porto or Sherry wine.

I smoke actual Cubans whenever I can, and God knows there is no better cigar on earth.

That said, if you do like to smoke Cubans, you better have a way to get them yourself (or be like me, and have a former college roommate with a boat docked in Miami and a tendency to travel to Havannah every other week like clockwork while on his way to the Dominican Republic so that the U.S. Coastguard can't hold him on anything) because the smuggling rings aren't really worth it.

Also, they're pricey (even if your contact is a guy whose life you saved in a bar fight and got a scar to prove it). Don't be shocked at the price.

Definitely Cohibas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cohiba_(cigar_brand))

I would recommend a Siglo II, it's got good flavour, but it's still reasonably light.

I haven't smoked many, but that's definitely my favourite... I can also recommend tasting it with an excellent whiskey or brandy, or refreshing your palate with a (suitably Cuban) mojito.

Alas, I have no humidor.... My last one is stored in the bathroom in some Tupperware!

With cubans you got to becareful. only the tobacco grown in the extreme western portion of the island is good. get it from anywhere else and it will taste like a white owl.
given 75% of production and 99% of the exports are the good stuff. the only exception being the US because the smuggling operations will buy the cheapest cigar they can and often ends up with crap.
