It happened when people realized what men did with other men when women weren't around for extended amounts of time.

Which is completely different from Pirates who are stuck on ships for extended periods of time, or Ninjas which everyone knows don't get jack shit action from anyone other than their own hand.

And Brokeback Mountain was mediocre.

The problem is, there's too many cowboy posers. People that are so fake, that the closest they've come to a cow is the time they took a piss at an Arby's*.

Us Indians went to law school, started getting our land back and had our aboriginal rights recognised by the highest courts in the land. After that, the Cowboys just weren't that cool anymore. They got scapled by braves in suits. Figuratively.

What I find most amusing about Cowboys was that movies and TV portray them as White but in reality the majority were black/Hispanic/ native American.

I figure that's part of it. Sort of. There just isn't a wild west anymore; now instead there's all this Hollywood and New Mexico and Las Vegas shit.
When the last campfire flickers,
And is laid to righteous rest,
When the Ones who wandered without fear,
Are cursed, who once were blessed,
When all our deeds of glory,
Are laid in front of Thee,
When you ask what man hath wrought,
Don't rest Your gaze on me.

The Spartans were the biggest faggots in the history of raping one's mentee, but that obnoxious movie about them was still made.

I've spent an awful lot of time at the family ranch, and have spent enough time riding the range to be considered a cowboy. And, in fact, i believe the decline in the popularity of the cowboy is a representation of our society. as we move away from the rural, more and more people forget that in fact, there still are cowboys out west. a lot has to do with the liberal/antiauthoritarian mindset of today's youth also

Nonsense. Indeed, gay cowboys may be the only redemptive element of the genre.

Do you carry a "six-gun?" How many times a week are you forced to take the law into your own hands? When was your last duel?

To be "out west" doesn't mean anything anymore. You can get telephone and internet access wherever there is sky above your head, and people live everywhere.

Pirates faced entire nations hunting them down as they bandied about the Caribbean, ninjas could single-handedly take down an entire castle as they flitted through shadows.

Cowboys shot men with sticks and grappled with cows.

I'm not sure they were ever cool.

*nods*

Those who ride the waves have long been known to be butt pirates whether or not they rob other ships.

or Ninjas which everyone knows don't get jack shit action from anyone other than their own hand.

Yep.

i like this. i would like to think cowboys are still cool and they always will be the difference is that pirates are well trendy ( YAY FOR HOLLYWOOD and us falling for it) and well ninjas just are! yeah! i think they all have alot in common.well.. first of all they all carry weopons, second they all master theyr fields but the most resembling thing is theyr politics
a lot has to do with the liberal/antiauthoritarian mindset of today's youth also
Ninjas : we all know they fight for the poeple they kill corrupt leaders, give money to the poor blah blah blah....
Pirates: did you know that pirates had a well organized hierarchy. yup you would go into battle and the wounded would get a part of the stash to account for theyr wounds leaders would be ellected (and killed if theyr crew was unhappy with the way they ran things)
Cowboys: taking the law in theyr own hands(i think this says it all)

but you know what the coolest thing about a cowboy is: he can be good and evil. billy the kid was a "bad guy" (maybe not evil... all he did was steal cattle)
yet who hasnt heard his name.

ninjas are inherently good and pirates just are what they are.

Willie put it best:

And them that don't know him won't like him
And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him
He ain't wrong he's just different
But his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right

"My heroes have always been cowboys, and they still are today..."

Who is more bad-ass than Doc Holliday or Wyatt Earp, or Wild Bill Hickok, or Kit Carson? Also, cowboys have never been gay, despite Hollywood's pernicious efforts in that direction lately. It's a sad commentary on movies when the genre that gave us John Wayne and Clint Eastwood now deems Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall sufficient.

Spike disagrees.Yeah, well, if you change the meaning of "cowboy" to bounty-hunter, then it does become a bit cooler, yeah.
If you changed it to mean "ninja space-pirate" it'd be unsurpassibly cool. The less it's actual got to do with cowboys the better ;)

About the same time as you decided that no cowboy movie, book, or song cycle has been produced since 2005, and that the place of the cowboy in US culture was largely static before then. (The Searchers is a merry romp and fun for the whole family, by the way.)

Cowboys are an icon. More specifically, they're an icon of US Anglo dominance, so our attitudes toward them have shifted as our attitudes toward US Anglo dominance have shifted. The more conflicted we feel about the stupid wars we get into, the more conflicted we feel about cowboys.

I don't know who told you that ninjas are inherently good, but it just isn't true. Ninja's traditionally specialized in the dubious art of assassination, which is not the noblest of skills.
