Just added the poll!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently, video showing a candidate for the Canadian NDP party puffing 'a bit' of weed, dropping some acid and smoking DMT aired on national news. He was promptly dropped from the party. I'm wondering how a national political party could allow something like this to fly under the radar? Thoughts?

Maybe they dropped him because they wanted to play fair. I mean, a candidate that is that qualified would sweep the election by storm and leave no chance for anyone else.

Hmm. Politicians on pot, too doped up to do anything - hey, if they're baked out of their skulls, maybe they'll stop doing stupid things that wreck the country! I demand that all politicians worldwide be required to smoke at least one joint a day! Less war, less oppression, just, like, peace out dudes!

I think that if it had been just marijuana, he probably would have been ok.. It's true, the West seems rather accepting (if not encouraging) of cannabis culture. Acid and Dream Drugs though..

You need to qualify that statement so we know which area of oddity you're referring to.

That's okay, I'll vote for the pot-smoking NDPer in my riding anyway.

It´s never the drugs... besides, the fact that someone uses drugs, to me, does not have a detriment in the kind of person he/she is. But what do I know, right?

Oh well. Yeah. I won't pretend I don't understand the references to mellowness...we aren't as hysterical as the yanks, nor as stuffy as the Brits...we have a strange national character indeed. I sort of believe it's because Mother England basically had to shoo us away from her skirtstrings. In any case, most of us are content just doing what we do, and smoking massive amounts of pot or drinking copious amounts of Pilsner whilst we do it.

No, Vancouver is more like a dirty concrete forest where junkies shoot up openly in the streets, homeless swarm you if they think they can get a dime, gays still fear for their lives at times and it's all being swept under the rug for the olympics because those who have the power to change it used to care, even if it was only around election time. Now they're only concerned with telling us how much the other guy sucks.

People are real pissed about the Olympics from what I hear. There's already people planning for "Riot 2010", and the police just bought an armoured vehical with a machine gun or something (at least that's what I heard).

Yeah... I think it's mostly homeless advocates, native groups and the rest is an assortment of anarchists and trouble makers. Someone threw paint on the count down clock and the police and the media treated it as though they blew it up. They're starting to shuffle the homless out of the big city and into the smaller cities aorund it that honestly cannot handle them. They just don't have the resources.

Vancouver has it's seedy underbelly for shizzle. Especially if you stray into East Hastings. That hasn't changed.

It's a pretty nice city overall...but it depends on where you live, and what socio-economic rung you inhabit.

Can't argue with you there.. Hastings and Abbott is a sketchy scene. But overall, Vancouver is a pretty nice place.. I love the 'no real Canadian winter' policy of the West coast. Getting to be a little too corporate, but ah well... It still beats the hell out of Toronto!

I work there. The city is dirty, loud, constantly under construction, over run with drug addicts, homeless people and hookers and no one gives a damn as long as they can continue to shove them all into compact pockets of the city, making them completely undesirable for anyone to visit. Ever walked through Chinatown? Gastown? East Hastings? There are beautiful parts of the city... Stanley Park, Kits, the beaches, upper Granville where the rich people live over the river where the really rich people live... places that tourists are likely to go. But living and working here... the blemishes are obvious.

Also, it rains a lot. -_-

As far as weed is concerned, the main issue is which one is best.

So in other words, Vancouver is just like almost every other city in North America, except it's beautiful areas are truly spectacular. I have lived in a half-dozen other Canadian cities from Ontario-west, and Vancouver (with the exception of Victoria) was, in my opinion the best far and away. True, East Hastings and Gastown are rough areas and have an abundance of social problems, but how about downtown Toronto (Tent City?), the North end of Winnipeg, ALL of Regina... For it's size and population, I would argue that Vancouver is doing well for itself in comparison to MANY other cities in North America (and even Canada).

... but yeah, the rain takes its toll for sure. SAD, anyone?

Ah, the wonderful British based countries.
Even though we in the States have the same underlying original cultural basis, it becomes more and more obvious why we made a complete break.
As South Africa did for about 30 years.....
And Ireland left the Commonwealth, too.

Yes, Canadians and the rest of the Commonwealth are certainly an unusual breed!
