Thieves Take Cancer Patient's Dog

A young cancer patient is putting out a call for help after someone broke into his family's home and stole his brand new puppy.

What's worse, investigators believe whoever did it knows the family and the fact that the little boy is sick.

Ryan Morgan was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma four years ago, and he has been fighting his cancer on-and-off ever since.

Ryan turned 10 in July, and his parents gave him a miniature dachshund for his birthday to help him keep his spirits up.

"Whenever I went to the hospital or something, I would always think of her, and it would make me happier," he said. "I really like her. She's cute."

Ryan and his family were stunned when they returned to their Barrow county home two weeks ago to find that someone had broken in and stolen the puppy named "Dixie" from inside her crate.

"Who would steal a dog when you see pictures of a boy who has cancer," Ryan said. "I don't know why."

"He's been through a lot," said Missy Morgan, Ryan's mother. "I had cancer last year, and it's not right. I can't understand why this is happening. We just want her back to make things as right as we can. We just want his puppy back."

Investigators were able to recover a fingerprint and a footprint from the scene.

They told the Morgans they believe teenagers who know the family are responsible.

Along with Dixie, who's 13 weeks old, the thieves also took Ryan's Wii entertainment system, his mom's computer which was filled with photos of ryan and her jewelry case with some of the trinkets Ryan made for her over the years.

"We're just trying to get Dixie back," Ryan said. "That's pretty much all I want."

"He just loves here to death, we all do," said Missy Morgan. "We desperately want her back."

To contact investigators with information, call the Barrow County Sheriff's Department at 770-307-3084.

Wanted posters produced by the Morgans include their number, 770-329-8683.

B.C. family shocked after dog shot outside home

Updated Tue. Sep. 16 2008 3:36 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Police are hoping that a B.C. man, suspected of shooting a four-month-old Jack Russell puppy just metres away from its home on Quadra Island Saturday morning, will soon report to police.

...

Owner Nick Rose said the dog -- called Seymour -- was a gift to son Max, to mark the end of three-years of cancer treatment.

"My kids were happy and laughing like they haven't been in years. My son in particular since before he was diagnosed with cancer I hadn't heard those kind of giggles and that kid of laughter out of him."

But all that changed on Saturday morning outside the rose family's Quadra Island home.

"We had our new puppy with us, and we had a great night just the three boys, and we're staring our chores and down the road walked two hunters returning from an unsuccessful dear hunt."

Both of these hunters had shot guns. Not knowing any better, Seymour did what most puppies would do.

"He bounded out in his affable, puppy-like way wagging and simpering and practically peeing himself wanting to say hi."

But Rose knew the two men from an incident a few years earlier and he knew this was trouble.

Frantic he called Seymour back. But the puppy just followed the pair around a corner and out of sight. That's when a shot rang out.

"I ran to the end of our driveway and looked around the corner and there was our little puppy, quivering in his death-throws at the side of the road."

The hunters ran off leaving Nick and his kids in shock along with the rest of the island community. Even police are in disbelief.

"What did you steal?"

I don't think anybody deserves to be raped. But I DO believe that considering the monstrous nature of mankind and the fact that barring an evolutionary leap forward, there will always be rape and barring making everyone NOT in prison a prison guard, there will always be prison rape, that certain people should be moved to the front of the prison rape line. People who steal puppies from cancer boys should definitely be put tin the express lane. ;)

Which is why the kid should wreak revenge. It should go over like "Why am I suddenly being arrested for pedophilia? How did all this fake evidence appear?" to the kid (a few years down the road) answering "You stole my dog.".

If that dog is dead (which I fear it is), it would be just what the bastard deserves.

Well, no, it wouldn't. But vengeance isn't about what the person DESERVES, it's about re-taking enjoyment someone else had over your misery - perhaps with interest.

Again, vengeance has little to do with what the target deserves and everything to do with what will cause upon the perpetrator of the vengeance the most enjoyment. Furthermore, they didn't steal a dog TO steal a dog, they stole a dog TO harm the kid. Just like the kid wouldn't be planting kiddie porn evidence TO plant it, he would be doing so TO permanently destroy these perps' lives and make them beg for death.

I could go into a whole thing about the philosophical and psychological aspects of revenge and how the sort of excessive retaliation you advocate wouldn't qualify. On the other hand, you'd probably retaliate to any further disagreement by firebombing my house, so I'll just not.
Instead, I'll say only this: I hope, for your sake, that you've never cut anyone off in traffic, stiffed a waiter on his tip, stepped on anyone's toe, cut in line or taken too long to return a video to the library. Judgment day is coming, and it seems melodramatic self-righteousness and he-man antics are going to be the rule of the day.

First of all, reknown philosophers like Peter Singer have argued that humankind's tendency to view animals as slaves of a sort is immoral. While I don't agree with everything he (and others like him) say, dismissing their arguments out of hand without thinking them through is closeminded at best.

Secondly, following your chain of logic to an extreme hypothetical situation, you could hardly complain if someday a more evolved species (or perhaps an invading alien race) treated you like some animals are treated today: testing you, doing experiments, chaining you up in a cage, etc. I'm not saying I believe in aliens, so don't blow that bit out of proportion.

Third, the article is not really about the puppy, so much as it is about the sick boy. Hundreds of pets die or are stolen every day. There's nothing unique about this story, except that it happened to a kid dying of cancer. This story is a critique on the cruelty of people and their sometimes complete disregard for the feelings of others.

Lastly, if those responsible are caught, they should be punished no more or less than the law allows. Just because this theft occured against an infirm person does not mean the penalties should be increased. Emotions have no place in a court of law.

Very well, I'll back up and try again. You originally said the following statement: "Get over yourself. It's a stupid animal". If an alien race came to Earth, and if they followed your logic, then they would be justified treating us however they felt like. After all, we would just be 'stupid animals'.

Does anyone else understand what I'm saying? Am I not making my point clearly enough?

3. Well, you'll have to explain how you were on track, then. My original point would have stood whether the boy was merely sick or actually dying. I guess I don't know what you meant when you said "is he actually dying? Or is he just ill?".
