So on Monday, at my class, we watched "Driving Miss Daisy". (Am I the only one who thought the Portrayal of Hoke was a bit racist?) and my teacher wants us to talk to a black male about how his occupations (occupations isn't just a job, it's activities that you do that has meaning), would be affected if he couldn't read. (If you ever saw the movie, you'd find that Hoke couldn't read.)
Ok, why does it have to be a black male? Why does it even have to be male? I'm sure that a white male, a black or white female would all be hindered in similar ways in their occupations if they couldn't read.
I'm sorry, but I'm tired of the division of people into meaningless categories such as Races, sex, sexual orientation, religion etc. Who gives a fuck? I don't care if you're a Jewish woman who lives with her life partner who is a black transsexual who's in Asatru.
Honestly, I think it's time we stop having hangups about races, about gender, about sexual orientation, etc. Because at the end they're all meaningless, because we all end up as worm food.
Also, I'm not a bigot, I think everyone is an idiot regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion.
Discuss.

Your opinion's rather clear-cut, eh?
Well... yeah, don't really give a shit about 'taboo' relationships either. My French teacher last year (moved, dammit) was excellent, and was openly gay. Why does that matter? 70% of the kids in my (junior) class made jokes at his expense and were uncomfortable with him, 20% didn't know him, and the remaining 10% were like me- knew him, the KIND of person he was, and didn't care about his personal life.
Don't judge, people.

Black people have black skin - Clear identifiable meaning
Women are the female gender of humans - Clear identifiable meaning
Homosexuals are sexually attracted to members of the same sex - Clear identifiable meaning
Christians follow the Christian religion - Identifiable meaning, though in this case quite broad.
They don't look like meaningless to me.

Well be careful what you mean by meaningless. Because they are not, and have uses sometimes (such as identifying people, saying for instance that the person who robbed me was a white female will make it easier to find the criminal).

Speaking as a committed white nationalist, I think the real lesson of the film "Driving Miss Daisy" is that black males can't stay away from white women.
Jessica Tandy, considering how her sultry shakiness and lascivious leathery form would surely tempt the primal and unrestrained urges of a black man, should never have been placed alone in a car with Morgan Freeman, whose feral savage masculinity could have, at any time, caused him to lose control and begin narrating all over her.
For Dan Akroyd, whose race treachery stems all the way back to "The Blues Brothers", to have exposed her in this manner, is unconscionable.
As to the illiteracy of black males and its impact on their ability to function in a contemporary economy, if you teach a black man to write, all your going to end up with are guys like Cornel West, H.L. Gates Jr., and Aaron McGruder.
Why read their work, when Ann Coulter publishes prolifically?

Maybe this is just an elaborate plan on the part of Wilgrove's teacher to get as many of his student's beaten up as possible because he hates them and wishes that they would suffer as much as possible. The fact that they were forced to watch Driving Miss Daisy is convincing evidence for this hypothesis.

Just further verifies my hypothesis. 65 years is a long time to build a store of bitterness and cunning, setting by all the wrongs which have been done to one. Until, one day, they just snap and see how many people they can drive to take their own lives.

Of course the portrayal of Hoke was racist, look at the time frame and part of the country it was set it. Note also the antisemitism exhibited towards Daisy as well (remember what the cop said when they got pulled over that one time). That was a major part and parcel of the film, the exploration of race and personal relationships in that era.

The absolute irony of this sort of sentiment coming from someone who constantly pigeonholes people into nice little categories(if not by the traditional ones) is side splitting.
I do believe, however, you'll find that I agree, in a sense. I don't agree that we should be color blind, because ignoring these differences will only lead to more problems.
Instead, my way of looking at it is "Yeah, okay, so that guy is black. So what?" "That girl is Hispanic. So what?" etc etc. That is, while I note the ethnicity or the gender, etc etc, I don't use it as any sort of value judgment.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of the division of people into meaningless categories such as Races, sex, sexual orientation, religion etc.Too many people and social institutions sadly. While it would be great if you could just erase social constructs such as race and gender just by closing your eyes and wishing really hard, it is alas not quite that simple. You cannot destroy social hierarchies by simply declaring that they are absurd. The categories of institutional discrimination must actually be acknowledged in order to fight the institutional discrimination.

the movie is meant to explore racial issues in early 20th century America.
These problems do not go away by ignoring them, and those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. your teacher seems to be directing discussion of the movie the wrong way though. Nut really since you missed the point about a moving movie that helps us understand our past please just steer yourself back to the action section of the movie rental place and never delve any deeper.

Ah, conditional love...that takes me back to my youth...
On topic, I asked one of the black guys I used to work with when I was in solid state physics, how he'd do his research if he was illiterate. He claimed he could reduce most of what he does to symbolic logic and diagrams, but publishing in peer-reviewed literature is the only thing that keeps him funded these days.
I asked him how he would read research he would need to cite for his own submissions, and he said he'd have somebody read it to him.
I asked him if it would be a slightly plump but very attractive white woman. He told me to bring him a Pizza Supreme from across the street and then go away.
