McGuire, who chairs the State Affairs Committee, was questioned by police at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, but was not charged with a crime.

When buildings are named after still living figures, you know there's something rotten in Alaska.

A small sidenote on the cell phone usage in planes: The signals to and from cell phones may cause some controls of planes to stop working. An accident in which a plane crashed on houses downhill from the airport during takeoff, in which everybody plus the people in the houses died was caused in Brazil a while ago by a cell phone. It's less of a problem that this alcoholic idiot threw a tantrum after being refused booze than her willingness to put her life (fine) and everyone else in that plane's (not fine) at risk by not turning off her goddamn blackberry.

Yes. For more information, you should watch this movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zA5hhSDLA4) about a typical month in Alaska.

I remember that. A damn decent documentary from the tourist's perspective about the evil of Alaska. Which is why visitors should remember their UV lamps, silver, garlic, crucifixes, armor piercing rounds, and most of all, a set of quick escape routes.

The more I learn about Alaskan politics, the more I am convinced that it is the most corrupt state in the union...

...I could make some pithy comments about which party controls most of the offices in Alaska, and note the similarities between Alaska and the nation as a whole while under the leadership of said party, but it'd be too easy.

Cellphones don't cause flight controls in any modern airplane to cease functioning. I'd love to see where you got this information, but I'm guessing you have no bloody idea. Some planes operate their own cellular phone service while in the air, and no accident that I have ever heard of occuring has come to pass because of an in-flight cell phone service. The only disturbance I have ever heard of is a malfunction of the VOR navigation system on small, prop-driven airplanes.

Some airlines allow passengers to use cell phones during flight, while others only allow cell phone use before and after flight. While it hasn't been proven that either restriction has any effect on any of the flight control or navigation systems, some airlines take this extra precaution.

In any case, the actions of this senator are inexcusable. You're a public figurehead on a public flight out of one of the largest cities in the state you govern - the least you can do is show the reason why you are in office in the first place some respect. Texting on her Blackberry pre-flight, when the plane was on the ground, was the least dangerous thing she did.

Vit-D deficiency? Dunno. It would be interesting to know what's behind the whole "air-rage" phenomenon. A sense of entitlement seems to fuel it in the case of celebrities (and now politicians), but orinary people are susceptible too, esp. when alcohol is part of the equation. :p

Altitude does affect people even inside a pressurized cabin. Probably does something to the blood that makes alcohol go through the system much quicker than on ground.

Only very old cockpits ought have a problem with cell phones. Newer ones are shielded enough to not fret.
