Wikileaks, the online clearinghouse of classified information that has caught the Guantanamo Bay prison, Northern Rock, and a major Swiss bank in its crosshairs, has posted hacked data from Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's private e-mail account.
The alleged hack was pulled off by "loosely affiliated" members of an anti-Scientology group, according to Wikileaks, which justified its move by citing Palin's reported use of yahoo.com to conduct official state business. (Aides to George Bush came under fire for similar e-mailing behaviour last year.)
The hack uncovered family photos and the addresses of Palin friends -- of questionable relevance to any public records violation, really -- as well as what looks like proof that Palin was indeed using personal e-mail for state business.
Sounds like the work of Anon/Legion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_(group))? I would love to see Anon do some damage to the Palin campaign by exposing the dirt on her. :)

They'd have to hack her ebay account for that. I heard she tried to auction it for fair market value, but it ended up having to be sold for much, much less.

They were going somewhere positive with Project Chanology, but that one fizzled out like New Coke.
Most of the time they're looking for short-term schadenfreude for lulz. Few if any are committed to long term goals like taking out Scientology and I Can't Believe It's Not Hillary.

I'm not claiming Anon is impartial, media or an organization. I'm just pointing out that, well, neocons hacked Obama's site, so I'm finding it hard to muster sympathy for Palin. I only wish they disclosed something BIG and hope they are actually holding on to something big TO throw a wrench in McCain's campaign come November.

Well, one new site reported that since Palin is currently under investigation, her official email can be viewed by the investigators.
Sending official stuff on a personal account is not only incredibly naive regarding data security and privacy, it might turn out to be actually an offense in this case...

It all just looks like a storm in a teacup, from where I'm sitting.
A comment that I saw on another forum earlier today sort of summed up the way I'd interpreted it...
What's really pissing me off about this entire yahoo email thing is the way that the entire media keep calling it "hacking"
Someone just entered her email adress and hit password recovery. She'd set her secret question to "What is your zip code?"
That is the extent of security she used. Now we get to watch as the fucking clusterfuck that is American media paints this as some evil liberal conspiracy using high tech attacks to target this christian woman.
There was no hacking, nobody broke in to the yahoo system. This is akin to someone locking their car and then leaving a note in the window saying : "I've hidden the keys on the front left wheel"
This woman would be in charge of nuclear launch codes. This is the level of security and computer knowledge she has and I, for one, find that to be a terrifying prospect. This, however, will be entirely ignored by the media, who will simply run this as another "POOR PALIN THE BOYS ARE MEAN TO HER" story.
tl:dr: looking up a zip code isn't hacking. Media will fuck the story completely.
Seems plausible to me.

From what I hear, all it was was just one person who managed to hack into her yahoo mail account and then he posted some screen shots on /b/, it was not an anonymous attack by any means. The guy eventually gave out the login in details which caused a flood of logins causing her to delete her account. So yeah pretty lame.
CthulhuFhtagn
18-09-2008, 20:03
Wasn't even a hack. Her security question just sucked. And then, in his brilliance, he gave the password to /b/, instead of, you know, actually archiving the e-mails and potentially revealing incriminating information.
Edit: It wasn't a security question. All Yahoo needs for a password reset is DOB, residence, and Zip Code.

You could always look up the Cult Awareness Network. Long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away it used to be a watchdog group until $cientology sued it to bankruptcy and bought out the rights to the name. Now it's a hollow shell that redirects people to $cientology every chance it gets. So it could be considered a pro-$cientology group.

There's plenty of room in politics for equal opportunity mudslinging.
Mudslinging is what political groups do to each other. A bored individual gaining the password to someone's e-mail account is not "mudslinging". Nor is it "mudslinging" to investigate potential unethical and illegal activity when it surfaces, such as Palin and her staff using private e-mail accounts for government business.
GOP directs the FBI and SS now? Or are they just demanding it?
Well, the President is a Republican, so I'd say the GOP runs the Secret Service right now. Unless you think they don't follow orders from the President?

What's wrong with yahoo?
The fact that any jackass with her Wiki page up could gain access to her Yahoo account, where she did official state business from.
Though, we already knew that she used a Yahoo account for state business. The current ethics investigation on her tried, and I believe is still trying, to subpoena the archived e-mails in this account because she did state business with it.
