Anybody Going to See ...

The Women?

This is a remake of a movie made in 1939. I enjoyed watching the original version which is a social satire on society women in pre WWII America. Taken in that context, it's an entertaining way to learn about the times, the position of women in those times and the amount and type of escapism the Depression era produced (there was some serious denial in the movies of the time). I'm just not sure how this can translate into the twenty-first century without losing impact and meaning. I think I'd like to see it, but I'm not sure I want to spend $8.00+ to see what could be a travesty and could end up ruining the original for me.

So, anyone going to see it? Has anyone seen it already? If you have, what did you think? Has anyone here even heard of it?

If you go to a remake expecting it to be the original, you're always going to be disappointed, no matter how good the remake actually is. My policy with remakes has always been: read the reviews for the movie, and see how people are evaluating it on its own. If people are ripping it apart based on its own flaws, then avoid it, but if the only complaints you hear about it are comparisons to the original, go see it.

I have never heard of it, and after reading the IMDB pages for bother versions (1939 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032143/) & 2008 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430770/)) I have no desire to see either one. All of which makes me wonder why I even bothered to post.

Not always.

Not always.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. I'm simply saying that if you go to see a remake of a movie you loved as the original, and compare it to the original, you're going to find things wrong with it, no matter how good it might be. You need to evaluate the remake on its own merits, not in comparison to the original.

The reviews I've read of it both seemed to agree that it was pretty mediocre, so no, probably not. The original might be an interesting one to rent sometime, though.

I heard it wasn't nearly as good as the original, so I've heard.

I don't think they will be able to make a new version of this movie that even comes close. And everything I have heard about the new version (having men with dialogue for one) makes me cringe. The original was so clever, so well-made and just a brilliant movie all around.
