Best video game ever!

So, in yet another "Best X ever" thread, I ask you, what is the best video game ever? Not the one that you say "Ohh, it's so great and so is the remake!" The one that is "This game CANNOT get any better, it's really that great!" Yeah. That one.

For me, I must give out a few.

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.

Myst. (The first one)

Resident Evil. The first one, the remakes were rather "Meh" when compared to the original, despite the upgraded graphics and changed gameplay. The first is still teh best!

And Ark The Lad. 1&2 (Since they were meant to be the same game...)

Crystal Caverns. can't beat the original.
Phantasmagoria. the first true horror video game
Wolfenstein: sure a BFG is handy. but it takes real skill to use a chaingun.
Fatal Frame: I still refuse to play this game at night. and Guns are for wimps.

My favorites, in no particular order: Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Call of Duty 3&4, Goldeneye, Crash Bandicoot 2, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, Resistance: Fall of Man, Civilization 3...

Probably a ton of others I've forgotten.

Hmm: Not the best game ever by a long shot, but Star Wars Battlefront 1 or 2 definantly wasted my time for a couple months, or years, I still play it today.

I like Twilight Princess over Ocarina, except the Ocarina itself is fun to toy with.
I like Killer 7 too, it was certainly freaky though.
I love Civ IV.
And yes, I know I'm about to be run out of here by an angry mob.

PS: Conserative Morality, I answered your question about THEMIAN in that thread, the TP or PT one.

I liked "The 7th Guest" better. A little more emphasis on atmosphere, the kind of thing that keeps you up all night, jumping at every bump and creak.

7th guest was mostly puzzle solving.
Phantasmagoria was an interactive horror movie. when the computer said "insert disc 7" you better pray you got everything you need, or you knew where to find them because that's when the fun really starts. :D

I found it to be kinda "Meh". The seventh guest kept me on the edge of my seat after the maze. *Shudder*

That and I loved the plot twist. Beautiful storytelling.

Timesplitters. Running around a haunted house as an Elvis impersonator carrying a sawn-off shotgun in each hand, blasting zombies, golems and Chinese people in the face. Pure, stupid fun.
Although, I'm probably biased in favor of this game more because of my memories of multiplayer. Those were some great times,
"You can't snipe with a blunderbuss!"
"Oh God, the cheerleader just got me."

Or, one of the best exchanges in a game of Capture the Flag, after my brother had just fallen into off a dock and drowned while on his way to our base with the enemy flag.
"It was an accident; I didn't see it!"
"It's a big fucking lake, how do you accidentally fall into it?"
"It snuck up on me."

I liked how Konami presented that game for the reviewers.

they booked two floors of a hotel. put one reviewer in each room with the game on.

then they locked the doors and turned off the lights... :D

When I first played Fatal Frame, I had my PS2 in the bathroom. so yes, that game litterally scared the shit outta me. I watched and played through the opening and after that, I made my promise to only play that only during the day.

My friend played that game, at first he dis'ed my comments about it. Later he told me he started the game in the late morning and next thing he knew it was night... with no lights on in his room except from the TV... and he didn't want to leave that lit area to cross his room to turn on the light. :D

Yes, they always release the Mac version a lot earlier than the PC one.

And yes, when they say the demos are full-featured and large, including ~1/4 of each game, or 10-15 hours of gameplay, they mean it.

And yes, I don't have a Mac, but these are the only modern RPGs I find good.
Geneforge is very good, especially the second one, and quite fast-paced.
Avernum 1 is excellent, if you can adapt to a bit outdated graphics; other Avernums, a bit tedious and repetitive (they're designed for 100+ hours of gameplay), but still good.

I liked the old Exile series, but I found the demos for the Avernum remakes to be largely repetative, and I bloody hated the graphics. They were cartoony, and unlike the charmingly and uniformly simplistic originals, they were just good enough for the crappiness to be annoying.

Well, if you have played through the Exile, no need to go to Avernum. It's just Exile on a new engine.

Its graphics are a bit of an acquired taste, I've learned to accept them by now; what only puts me off is the non-RT travel... you kinda get used to the world around at least pretending to go around its business.

Geneforge though has much better visuals. And is a better game, overall.

The first Avernum is quite good, and it's a bit better than Exile. Graphics are an acquired taste. But the game itself is excellent.
The second, decent too, it still avoids "been there, done that", but loses a bit of freedom. The others... Didn't play even 1/4 of the demo of each.

Geneforge, better than either. Put it this way, Geneforge is about the story, the morals and the design. Avernum is about a bit munchkinny, combat-heavy gameplay.

Master of Olympus: Zeus and its expansion, Master of Atlantis: Poseidon.

The game play is superb for those who do not have a lot of time on their hands, and the game keeps one entertained with its wonderful humor. For instance, the narrator is telling how Artemis is upset that she apparently cannot take a bath without mortals (Actaeon) "peeping at her", when he is interrupted by a far-off "wolf-whistle"; he clears his throat, then resumes. :D

And the fleece peddler: "Be careful, Euripides...Eumenides." Ha.

Best game in what genre? With what technology? When?

This sort of question is foolish because it tries to gather an entire medium and condense it into producing one thing that somehow stands above the entire rest of the whole. It's like asking "What's the best piece of art" or "What's the best book of all time" etc etc.

Just take a look at how technology has changed for video games over just thirty years .We went from Pong to Deus Ex, from Pacman to Galactic Civilizations II. Many games produced with today's technology could easily top a game produced ten years ago, while many others falter and fail. And of course a game produced with some sort of virtual reality technology further down the line would probably be infinitely better to anything produced today by sheer virtue of immersion.

So I declare this question null and void and refuse to answer it.

The Avernum remakes are not inferior. They do lack a little in the spell department, but most of those spells weren't actually all that useful. (And most of their effects are combined into the new spells in better ways.) Apart from that and updated graphics, they're pretty much identical. I can attest to this quite highly, having played Exile III extensively and then playing the Avernum version.

What you SHOULD be pissed off by is the use of Geneforge graphics for Avernum IV and V. I know why it was done, but I hated the Geneforge games and those graphics are locked in my mind as being highly associated with "Boring" so I can't bear to make myself play IV and V.

Yeah, story is good too, but the premise and the world, the best part.

In comparison, Geneforge has a simple, but very nonlinear story, and progresses at a faster pace. And, too, the very interesting premise - a question normally asked in regards to sci-fi, but in a more fantasy-style environment.

Other games I (have) like(d):

Lemmings: Anyone who has played this will know why
Ascendancy: Old, imperfect, but one of the best strategy games ever made
Adventure: Even older, but the granddaddy of all IF games
Rogue: The first and the best of the roguelikes.

The Myst series is quite fun. I haven't played them all, but of the ones I've played, I enjoyed Exile the most. In Exile the puzzles actually made sense in context, it didn't just seem like things were being needlessly obtuse for no reason. Coolest age is Spire in Revalation though.

And finally,
Galatea: Wonderful fun. Short, quick, no real win or lose, but a very fun AI, and the only time I've actually found myself holding a believable and emotionally involving conversation with a computer. Truly awesome.

Hearts of Iron 2, which fun has lasted more than any other game for me. Soon it'll be the first game I've managed to keep playing without getting boring for more than an year. The strategic and historical depth, the possibility of taking a country like Brazil or Argentina to turn into a world power, the challenge of standing against the Nazi blitzkrieg in Poland, and the ultimate goal of conquering the world, which is much more challenging than in any Civilization game, are things that I really like in it.

We need a Hearts of Iron III already. HoI II is good, but after a point it gets a little stale, especially since the AI is so poor. I mean, when they made Armageddon, they nerfed submarines because the AI couldn't use them rather than trying to update the AI so they could use them well. (Though admittedly that's probably a fault of the game engine and they couldn't update the AI enough.)

Is this the game you're talking about?

http://www.jawsthegame.com/

I heard it was ridiculously awful.

Yes it is, but the core gameplay is funnier than hell. I spent hours just eating people...

There's one mission where you have to eat bungees jumpers who are jumping off of a cliff, but you have to catch them before the cored snaps back and they go back up into the air... there is also a mission where you have to grab swimmers and through them back on to the beach in an attempt to knock down all the tents on shore.

The game sucks, it sucks badly. But its so much fun to wreak havoc...

The worst part is, I recognize this from Frasier.

Is the episode at least ten years old?

That's it, I'm making a remake of it! Just give me loads of money, at least 25% of it will go to game development. I'll let you guess where the rest will go. :p

It's Frasier, so if it isn't over ten years old, it certainly feels like it.
I'm pretty sure that joke was considered old by Aquinas' day, anyway.

Good point - talking of Aquinas(sp?) - the original Deus Ex was absolutely fantastic. Can't believe that hasn't been mentioned yet.

I know the stories are very similar, but its the "updated graphics" I have a big problem with. I hate them. Its a matter of taste, I guess.

Regarding spells, their were some useful ones that were cut, I think, but my main complaint is that the made fireball a non-area effect spell. I loved wiping out a big group of goblins with it, and now that joy is gone forever.:(

Indeed. I'm not sure which kind I liked better. Avernum's were obviously more advanced and prettier, in one sense, but Exile had a unique charm. I like them both for their own merits.

I can't stand Geneforge's though, as I said. No offense to Jeff Vogel of course.

Yeah, that was unfortunate. :(

Let's see what type of mischief I can get myself into...

Fantasy World Dizzy for the Commodore 64. And my choice has Yahtzee Crowshaw behind it, even in his own words (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/84-Console-Rundown) (about 5 min and 25 secs in).

Let's see what else:

Super Mario World
Halo (sequels didn't really advance too much)
TES IV: Oblivion GOTY
And countless multi-player tourneys with Mech-Assault.

The problem I had with SWotL was the stupid disk they used for copy protection. It came apart the second time I used it, then I lost the back half.

Oh yeah that's right they did to, yeah bugger shame because it was a fairly decent game (though I have played better on the same theme European Air war springs to mind) Actually amusing story about the disk my younger sister was being born and to come up with a name my Dad spun the wheel around and they choose the best one out of those 6-7 names that came up.

A toss up between Planescape:Torment and Chrono Trigger (SNES version, no cinematics for me!).
