What the Hell's happened to Facebook?

The layout is less simple and more complicated, it hides your groups and just looks crap. What do you think?

You probably were on Old Facebook. Old Facebook is no longer an option as of very recently.

New Facebook is alright, though. It's just different--it takes a while to get used to it.

...but do the extra few seconds really matter?

This format makes more sense. Things are divided up more, so you can decide for yourself what you do and do not want to see. People used to whine and whine about applications... well, Facebook listened.

The thing I hate the most is that they've combined the wall and the mini-feed. It looks terrible.

They did it to double their advertising though. Although when they replace the ads with what my friends have put as their statuses over the past couple days, this is extra creepy.

It's a neologism, and I, for one, don't like it. Mainly because of the US English style of spelling.

Which is really what it is all about, none of this rubbish that spills out of their mouths about making it easier for us, and we a re listening to you, it is all about making more money.

Before anyone says something along the lines of well its free, this isn't a service to you blah blah blah, I understand that and I accept that is what it is about. But I hold onto my right to be unhappy about it and I wish that they would just be honest about it, say we are doing it to make more money dont say we are doing it to make it better for you because you aren't and the end result isn't.

And I hate the new layout, I would like to close my account but everybody uses it and it is the best way to organise events without having to call up people or send emails you just look see it is on at this time this date and confirm that you will be attending.

Yes thank I have complained already, and have joined these new groups. Good thing you still had it shame they have got you in the old block, my boxes have stuck and I cant dismiss them from the main page to the applications page.

I hope they do decide to change back or at least give us the option for the two layouts.

I think it is fine, new and differant, but fine.

I have worked in IT for the last 20 years and it never, and I mean never fails to amaze me how people react when faced with IT change.

For teenagers here who use Facebook, I'm not sorry. You guys made it suck.

This. If you just get used to it, it's really not that difficult. When you're being intentionally obtuse, you're not going to like it no matter what.

Just try it people. You'll get used to it. It is much more organized now, IMHO. I guess they're playing to the OCD market.

Only because the the people who hate it have come to realise that they are stuck with the damn thing and just shut up about it, while those who like it were drowned out before and are now being heard. BTW I still hate it, there are some good bits I will give it that but I preferred the old layout.

'A man knew where he stood with the old layout.'

Heh again I cannot belive how many times I have heard this or themes on it, in my proffesional life.

It seems to me that when technology changes, the vast majority at first do not like it. Damn me I remember 'Dbaselll', with its poxy pull down menu system, then 'Access' turns up with it's fancy GUI, and guess what, data inputters didn't like it one bit. Now go and ask one of them if they would like to return to a menu driven system like 'Dbaselll' and I wonder what the answer would be?:D

Honestly, technolgy changes, and there really is nowt we can do about it. I rember when the CD cam out and all the vynil heads where up in arms, me I thought shit more music on a smaller medium, cool!

Yeah, yeah. We get it. You had to walk 3.14 miles to school in a blizzard, uphill both ways. Gas was cheaper, and every guy on the subway had a deeply personal way for telling the people around him to fuck off, unique to each person. Your iPods had wheels and monochrome screens, etc.

But is this new layout really technology changing? It is change one which I don't like simple because I do like the old way and I prefer it over this new layout, that is not to say I hate all new layouts maybe one which worked better for me I would like it more than the old layout. I am not against technology myself, I am what you would call an early adapter hell I had a Blu Ray player not long after they were released in Australia. But in this instance this new change is not to my liking.

As for my little "A man knows where he stands" comment, it was intended as a joke and was a reference to a 1970's TV show, but I thought that might get you I am not surprised at all to hear that you have heard it over the years.

What does this have to do with you? What difference does it make to your Facebook experience if every high schooler in the country has a Facebook profile crowded with applications?

Are you Facebook friends with a lot of high schoolers? If you are, surely opening it to high schoolers was a net asset to you? If you aren't... how exactly does what they do affect you?

Edit: It's an interesting phenomenon of the young that whatever their views toward their elders, they virtually always look with contempt upon those even only a few years younger than them.

It may go back to the old Facebook was for the upper class' while Myspace was for the lower class'.

I remember reading an article on the Social Network wars, and it mentioned how Facebook used to have a bit more class rather than Myspace, IMO it still does despite the change. So while Facebook was for the more elite or at least in their minds elite Myspace was more of a lower class plebs sort of web page a place where emos and goths and maybe even a few preps would hang hang out. In fact the article pointed also mentioned that the US Army had banned MySpace the site which many of its enlisted personnel used but didn't ban Facebook which was the site more of its officers use. Now that more and more people are moving into Facebook including teenagers maybe some of the people aren't liking that because now they want it to be a more exclusive club.
