19 year old dead in Texas
Posted: 11:01 PM ET

(CNN) — One person died Friday after drowning in the water off the coast of Corpus Christi, Texas, as Hurricane Ike approached, authorities said.

Capt. Robert MacDonald of the Nueces County Sheriff’s office said a 19-year-old man was swept out to sea after he and a friend went to the end of a 100-foot jetty to look at the waves generated by the storm.

One of those waves swept the man off the jetty and onto the rocks below, MacDonald said. Two bystanders tried to rescue the man but they were also pushed onto the rocks. One suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital, the captain said.

The 19-year-old victim has been declared dead, MacDonald said, but the Coast Guard has not yet recovered his body.

Now I've mentioned before how I felt that death was an awfully steep price to pay for idiocy, but this kid tested that feeling. *nod*

But it's not Ike, though.

The news said that at 1:00 AM, the winds in my area would be a sustained 80mph. And what's happening? Slight rain drops.

Did I call this yesterday? Did I fucking call this yesterday? I so fucking did. I understand my area isn't out of the woods quite yet, but this is looking like every other hurricane that's hit the Houston area since I've lived here. Tomball suffers slim to nil.

My party was cancelled for fucking nothing.

Hurricane parties are necessary for us not to feel the sheet metal roof slicing through our necks. :p

Nah, we just rejoice when there are storms because classes get suspended. :) Then we stay home and do, er... stuff. :D

Ike, from where I sit, looks to be a vastly over rated and hyped storm. A cat. 2 is not a "monster storm" as the ignorant Euro talking head on CNNj was calling it this morning. Rita and Carla were bitch quuen monster storms. Ike's an Alicia - more of a prancing prince, just slightly worse that the typhoons we get here in Osaka. (Note: Alicia's eye wall ran straight over me in 1983, so yes, I do get to talk trash about her.)

And the same idiot talking head who called Ike a "monster storm" should be tarred, feathered, and laughed off TV for suggesting the person she was interviewing in Houston find a basement to hide in.

Well, yes, I know that. His comment suggested more that there were no basements in Houston because of the water table.

Whereas it's actually a lot simpler than that. See what overthinking something does to you?

O.o

What?!? I had MORE sympathy for the ones in England and Wales. They did NOT test my feeling that death is a steep penalty for idiocy because they weren't that idiotic.

This kid stretched my feeling that death is a steep penalty for idiocy because he came closer to deserving it than I ever thought possible.

What the hell is wrong with you?

You recall wrong; http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=565296

I will be the first to admit that dead people are a killjoy. On the other hand, even the best amusement park thrill rides have the occasional accident. Sad, but fun has risks. I suspect that most(not all, unfortunately) people who die in floods are probably stupid. That's a small comfort, but I see death as a pretty steep price to pay for stupidity. I favor long-term injury with an eventual full recovery. Being in traction for a year is a fantastic learning experience. *nod*

In short, risk is part of the game. *nod*

Yes. But if I had my way, she would have survived to learn from the experience. :(

There are a number of freak accidents that can occur during a flood. Had she been electrocuted, or pinned by something suddenly collapsing or, depending on specific circumstances, washed away in a flash flood, I wouldn't lean toward assuming stupidity played a part. But when a person drowns in a car during a flood, I can't imagine a set of circumstances where any clearminded person would be driving in such a way in such a place where they could end up drowning in their car. My suspicion is that something stupid occurred.

Upon hearing a bit more about the circumstances, I see I was most likely correct in my assessment. Keep in mind I still consider dying to be a rather harsh penalty for a 17 year old to pay. :(

Edit: That story mentions a National Mud Festival. I'm intrigued. :)

I can understand how easy it must be for you to completely reverse my opinion; afterall, it was nearly 5 days ago. Fortunately, I don't believe stupidity should be fatal. So rest assured that the scrotum-seeking attack weasels en route to your location will not kill you. :)

Soory, but I thought that Caribbean Hurricanes were caused by extreme heating of the Caribbean Sea. Wouldn't the layer of carbon dioxide have something to do with that?

And the polar bears that are taking up long distance swimming in the Arctic. Is that not also the Global Warming that "An Inconvenient Truth" warned us about?

Does Fox News now accept that Global Warming is a reality?

I must've misread the thread title. When I first read it, I thought LG had said "Ike Roll Call", and not "Ike-Unrelated Quips About Kerry, Global Warming, And Misrepresentations of Various Posters' Opinion And Those Of People On TV". My bad.

So, can we now go back to seeing whether any NSGer was negatively affected by Ike, or at least discussing Ike-induced fates of non-posters?

Okay SoWiBi, who or what caused Hurricane Ike?
God or Global Warming?
You can't do much about Gob (apart from obey him and pray a lot).
But you sure as Hell can do something about global warming.
Unless of course you like annual hurricanes in the southern states and forest fires in the western ones - and drought all over.
These hurricanes are a warning! There will be far worse to come.
But then there will always be those who just don't get it.

Collectivity, if you want to discuss global warming, start your own thread.

The topic of this one is Hurricane Ike Roll Call. Such threads are a regular feature when there's a natural disaster that might affect NSers. Usually the folk near it just post saying "I'm alive/not hurt/still able to get online" and go on to tell why.

Others might post comments less directly relevant, such as whether the disaster was better/worse than it could have been/was predicted, but you're going well beyond that. It makes the original purpose of the thread hard to find. So drop it, please.

I agree with Collectivity, and I was the 1st one to get us off topic with LG. Maybe you should read the thread next time.

"Reading the thread" is how I saw it was going so thoroughly off topic. And yes, Adunabar, I did see your little off-track excursion with LG, but he dealt with it competently by himself.

As SoWiBi tried to with Collectivity, who should have listened but, regrettably, didn't. Which is where I came in -- not because anyone called me, but because I saw potential for worse if you refused to stick to the topic.

You may not realise that people reading this thread are looking for news about friends. They're a bit anxious. They don't need to go through all the extraneous arguments, they just want to see their friend's name. It's simply unkind to block it up with extraneous stuff.

There's no reason you can't start a new thread relating Ike to global warming. It's news, it's politics, it's what NS is about. But not in this thread.

I would strongly suggest you both listen when other players point out that sort of thing. They're just trying to keep the forums working smoothly. As am I.

Now let's give this silly diversion a rest and let the rollcall go on.

Wait, what's bad about basements in Houston?

Aside from their near non-existance (There might be a residential basement, but hvaing grown up in the area, I never heard of such a thing, and with good reason...), asubsurface space might not be the best choice of escape from flooding...

Water goes down due to gravity, that's what's bad.

Indeed. A fact that seems to have escaped a CNN talking head.

Well, yes, I know that. His comment suggested more that there were no basements in Houston because of the water table.

There pretty much aren't. Water tables are too high.

They may contain Texans.

Nope. The only residential basements you're likely to find in Houston during a 'cane will be full of GDYankees or Euro Weenies like that CNN talking head, too stupid to figure out that a hole in the ground below the water table isn't the best place to hide from a 20 foot storm durge...

Edit: Storm durge... that's too lovely a typo to change. ;)

On topic: I hear the coastal areas got pounded hard. I remember a thread not too long ago about coastal property rights and the problems with beach houses literally losing their land to the beach and laws concerning public access to them. I wonder if Ike resolved some of those dilemmas.
