Hm...I'd bet a nickel it's because they think Latino voters -- who the RNC have such a hard-on for -- don't actually follow US politics and won't know how McCain flip-flopped on that issue. The funny thing is, they must be assuming that English-speaking voters would know about it. (Oh, and of course, they're also assuming that both sets of voters are monolingual.)

Ah, Team McCain. What they lack in brains, spine and guts, they make up in balls. That much at least can be said for them.

The same kind of balls that turned the U.S. from respected world power into the skanky bukkake slut that everyone else holds in contempt. And yet the self-absorbed Reality Television addicted Red Staters show that it's working.

Idiocracy is no longer a satirical movie. Mike Judge is a prophet. The Mayans have no idea what the end of the world in 2012 really meant.

Okay. I've officially HAD it. I never used to understand why people flipped out and mowed down a McDonald's with a semi-automatic rifle until just now. It's because of horseshit like this that works on a population too obsessed with the lint in its own navel and where they can buy a Rubbermaid™ receptacle to keep it in to realize that they're not even TRYING to hide the fact that they're LYING OUTRIGHT and DELIBERATELY MISLEADING people and hoping that, because it's in Spanish, the immigrants will buy it, too.

Though I have to say, nice rant. :D I especially like the Rubbermaid naval lint receptacle. I believe they're coming out with a special edition one for the Martha Steward Living crowd.

Calm down already. McCain has to win basically all swing states in order to make it. If Obama wins just one, McCain is done for.

Obama is currently losing all of them. He's behind in CO, OH, FL, MI, NV, and NH. I had wanted out during the Bush administration, but couldn't afford it. My prospects for the next four years are even worse, considering I can't find a job.

It'll be a race between sympathy and a wake-up call as to just how old McCain really is.

I almost hope he has a health scare in the next month or so. You know, no actual harm; just a good scare. Might provide just the perspective swing voters need. *nod*

Obama is currently losing all of them.

And McCain was losing most of them throughout the year, and is winning them shortly after a convention bounce and a prop VP nominee whose novelty will wear off in about two weeks, not to mention the fact that they only count as "likely" voters the ones that voted in the last election and Obama is excelling at Get-Out-The-Vote operations.

This is not a modly question, it's an iggerunt furriner question -- does the US have an electoral authority where you can complain about advertising? Does it have teeth?

For example, we've got the Australian Electoral Commission (http://www.aec.gov.au/FAQs/election_advertising.htm), which says this:Intent of the law
5. Federal elections are conducted by the AEC under the provisions of the Act.
6. The Australian Parliament has determined that the Act should not regulate the content of political messages contained in electoral advertising; rather, the intent of the Act is to ensure electors are informed about the source of political advertising, and to ensure that political advertising does not mislead or deceive electors about the way in which a vote must be cast.
7. Accordingly, the AEC has no role or responsibility in deciding whether political messages published or broadcast in relation to a federal election are true or untrue. However, the AEC does have a role in ensuring, to the extent possible, that electoral advertisements are properly authorised so that electors can know who is responsible for the statements contained in them.
(My emphases) http://www.aec.gov.au/pdf/backgrounders/15/EB_15_Electoral_Advertising07.pdf

As you can see from that, the AEC is limited to (1) making sure that people aren't told the wrong thing about how voting is done (like, they're not told to put in A,B,C when a legal vote requires 1,2,3) and (2) making sure that the person who authorised the ad is made public.

The media usually go after the person named as responsible and ask them the predictable is-it-true or did-you-know-it-was-not-true questions. So it does make headlines, though die-hard supporters will just say, "Well, they would say that, wouldn't they?"

We've also seen people successfully prosecuted for publishing stuff purporting to come from their opponents -- not for saying, "My opponent stands by a party that has this policy", but for handing out pamphlets with a false policy on them and representing them as being official statements from the party they oppose.

So an Australian party affected by such a situation would be most likely to swiftly redirect its advertising to the language group involved, make sure that the unofficial gossip networks were alerted and try to keep it in the headlines in every language and medium possible.

The legal eagles would be working on the possibility of court cases, but recognising that there wouldn't be much hope of getting the ad pulled in time (our elections have a much shorter official timeframe).

What're the available reactions there?

Not really, no, the US doesn't have such a thing. We're supposed to have some kind of...people... who are supposed to monitor...something...but they don't. There was a rumor floating around for a while about the parties abandoning the path of negative campaigning (which is what generates most of the lies), but as you can see, that didn't turn out to be true.

Once upon a time, there was such a thing as "truth in advertising" regulations, and -- I know it'll be hard for a lot of people to believe this but -- the FCC was in charge of enforcing them and handing out penalties for ads that contained outright lies. But various corporate lobbying groups got those tanked and now the FCC spends all its time removing obstacles to tel-com trusts and monopolies and bothering innocent broadcasters every time one of "Reverend" Dobson's friends sends out another "I saw a tittie on the radio!!!!" email.

So, no, there's nothing to stop McCain from lying like a cheap rug in a whore house.

So, you don't have a non-partisan authority with teeth. So, what can the Democrats do about it?

This coming from a conservative, and yes, I acknowledge the fact that McCain lies. Hey, he's human, just like you and myself. Nobody's perfect, nor do either of the candidates claim to be. One thing that gives me a dim outlook on Obama is the ''withdraw the troops'' plan that doesn't exist. He says he has a plan, his campaign says troop withdrawal will be assessed depending on the ground situation. Another thing is the ''I pushed the wrong button'' defense. Using it once is fine, but once you get into six, seven, or eight times it beings to make one suspect.
The US was a respected world power? I must have slept through those fifteen minutes. I always thought everybody just hated us, but had a sort of ''Hey, we hate you, but you are the United States of America. Do we really want to fuck with you?'' kind of thing going on.:p

Heh. Just be grateful you weren't living in Missouri in 2006. Having to see unbe-fricking-lievably dishonest ads about what stem cell research entailed everywhere was enough to drive even generally calm, rational people like me into frothing rages. (Did you know that stem cell research is all about "creating human clones"? Or that it "promotes abortion"? Or that (I swear these were both real ads, much as I wish they weren't) it will inevitably lead to women being forced to bear and abort babies to feed the "research mills," and to the creation of "clone armies"?) *stab stab stab stab*

I'm not surprised in the least, given the sorry state of our educational system and how most people don't understand how to learn and how to critically think about issues.

It's not that they're unable, mind. They simply don't do it. If the entire nation were to critically think about things, you can bet that politicians like McCain would be wholly rejected.

ive become one of those "starts a thread then disappears" people!

im thinking that they dont realize how many hispanic voters watch spanish language tv but have perfectly good english skills so they know exactly what mccain--and the state he represents--have been doing about immigration.

the current tactic seems to be to put out outrageous lies and distractions in hopes of keeping the country off that whole "the bush administration, republican party, and mccain himself have fucked up the country so bad that its going to take a decade to set it right" thing. maybe there are enough stupid and easily distracted voters to put mccain over the top with secret muslim emails and complaints about how mean the liberals are to that fair flower of the far north that mccain is running with.

You've probably just contributed to the education of a bunch of Australian journalists. I'm emailing this to a friend who lectures on the media at the local Uni. Along with the clip I read in another poster's link about "post-birth abortions". Should save her from having to do any lesson prep for at least one lecture.

Suddenly I feel much more kindly towards the Press Council.
