1) Look in national politicians?
2) Look in local politicians?
1) Good negotiating skills. A national politician should be able to represent the ideas of his constituency and nation in an eloquent manner, and be prepared to back down where compromise is an option and stand his ground where it is not. Also, a hesitancy to use national-level power would go down well in my books.
2) Attention to detail, a down-to-earth perspective on the world and a cautious optimism for the future. A track record of responsible office-holding is also helpful, but cynicism and skepticism needs to be balanced with a bit of hope for change.

national--smart, supports my policies, is popular, has a power base

local--smart, has good ideas about how to deal with local problems, isnt just out to advance his own business interests at the expense of the city.

- Policies I agree with.
- Intelligence.
- Comparative non-corruptness.

Pretty much the same for local or national, although what the policies in question are are obviously going to vary.

Plato anyone?

Someone who nows too little about politics, too much about morality, and recommended that atheists should be imprisoned, then executed if they will not develop piety. The man who said that Sparta was the closest thing to his Republic. No, I thank you.

ability to hide hide his/her vices
Wouldn't that be an incentive to hide information (and where one thing is hidden, others could be)?

From the less perceptive populace, yes, unfortunately. But I live in a nation where the main reason people think Clinton made a bad president was because he was an adulterer.

Yes, especially since in the USA something above 30% of marriages have at least one adulterer. I'd venture to say that at least 20% have two, and thats not counting the ones that think its sexy...

Courage, wisdom and honesty are it for me.

But in Collectivity we don't have politicians. We have delegates with limited mandates and organise locally.

We believe in neither King nor President

"How can you tell when a politician is lying?"
"You can see his lips move."

The abilities to boost the economy, reduce trade deficit, and reduce the federal debts. Something like FDR perhaps. By the end of the day people live better when the country is rich, and struggle when the country is poor.

What qualities do you:

1) Look in national politicians?
2) Look in local politicians?

National

1. Actually has a voting record that proves that he/she sees defending the Constitution is more important than popularity polls.
2. Knows that most of what goes on (intranationally or internationally) isn't the Federal Government's F%#king business.
3. Promotes a George Washington style foreign policy, "Free trade will all, alliances with none."

Basically, I only really like Ron Paul.

Local

1. Been in the area for a long time.
2. Clearly and reasonably lays out what he/she plans to do.
3. Isn't just some irate citizen who wants to change one or two things and then move on.
4. If running for mayor, I'd prefer that they were on the city council for at least a term.
5. Doesn't allow his or her regular job to interfere with local government duties.
