Colleges Clean Up Dangerous Trash Left By Gustav Evacuees

BOAZ, Ala. (WAAY) -- Cleanup crews at some Tennessee Valley colleges have warned students and staff about potential health risks at their gyms after hundreds of evacuees came to north Alabama to escape Hurricane Gustav.

With old food, used toiletries, dirty blankets, the gymnasium at Snead State Community College was trashed Tuesday. About 300 hurricane evacuees had called the home for four days last week.

Within 10 minutes of arriving at the facility, school officials asked WAAY-31 News to leave. However, during the brief time the reporter was there, a syringe, a condom and used underwear were plainly visible.

School officials said that when the evacuees heard they were leaving, they left behind a big mess.

"There's just a lot to consider with the cleanup," said Snead State spokeswoman Shelley Smith. "We want to take everything into consideration. That's why we've brought in professionals that've done this before."

Tuberculosis, staph infections and hepatitis are just some of the health diseases that may be lurking inside the gym. Megan Reynolds is on the women's basketball team, which will condition outside and not on their home court for the next few days.

"It's affecting all of the college athletes," Reynolds said. "Because volleyball is practicing at a high school, they have to drive 45 miles. We're practicing in a smaller gym, so we can't really run. And the guys are practicing wherever they can."

The moves are just a temporary solution until the gym is all cleaned up. But looking around on Tuesday, it won't be easy.

Snead State isn't alone. There are reports of similar problems at other Alabama colleges as well.

It will cost about $20,000 to clean up the Snead State gymnasium. School officials said the Federal Emergency Management Agency will foot the bill.

Jeez, I know that some people can be inconsiderate assholes, but 300 people?

Am I the only one who heard similar stories of Katrina evacuees trashing a rest stop (also in Tennessee)?

All I know is that I wouldn't be making that offer again. Either let them find somewhere else to trash or charge $70 per person to stay there to cover cleanup costs...that's just plain inconsiderate no matter which way you look at it.

"Hey, thanks for letting me stay here for several days instead of wandering lost in a street somewhere or crammed into an expensive hotel or in my apartment hoping it doesn't collapse around me. And thanks for the food, water, blankets and medical care. By the way, when I was shitting behind the bleachers, I almost cut myself on the broken whiskey bottle I threw there the night before. That's a safety hazard."

And when are they gonna realize that the reason this keeps happening to them is that God hates them and the Jews are right. *nod*

The thought of anyone being hated by God makes me mad. Mad enough to shit in their auditorium on a pile of broken needles while drinking whiskey from the bottle and masturbating in to a condom.

Let's get this straight: 300 people were stuck in a gym over 4 days and after 10 minutes of searching, they found:
1 syringe (which could well have been for a diabetic, who knows?)
1 condom
1 pair of used underwear.

Other than the syringe, you could find worse than that in my place in 1/2 the time - and I live alone!

Whose auditorium? God's? The people God hates?

I think I need clarification.

Please do not blame that on the south. I used to live about 20 minutes from Snead and it's full of nice people. Kinda backwards, but nice.

Those people are New Orleans trash, and not really indicative of the rest of the region.

Moon pies at 25 paces?

Also, not sure what a Washingtonier considers backwards, but Snead's still in a dry county. They don't have traffic lights (that I know of). I think that counts as mildly backwards, right?

I've been to Acadiana (S Louisiana, back in April of 2003), and as much as I enjoyed my visit, I saw many things on the drives in and around Lafayette, New Iberia and Avery Island that seemed to me to belong to the Third World. From run-down sugar refineries to deplorable and unsafe living conditions, it was hard not to think of some areas I saw as not being in what's popularly portrayed as "America".

Fie on NorCal! Everyone knows SoCal is where its at. You people say weird things like hella.

Anyway, when a group of people are fleeing their homes and live in a gymnasium, there will be some refuse left behind. It doesn't excuse it but there are other things on their minds. Of course, that could just be they way they treat their homes, I've seen that before.

gee the place was dirty when they left.

is it the "fault" of the evacuees?

maybe.

but do you know what sanitary facitilites they had for 300 people for 4 days? were they provided with cleaning supplies? what provisions were made for them to keep their few possessions neat and clean? how much time did they have to clean up before they were shipped out?

of course they left a big mess. you dont take your trash back home with you.

yeah they trashed out my university coliseum in 2005. They tried to get student volunteers to clean the mess up. no one volunteered after the first day. then they offered to pay students(or anyone) to clean it up. took 20 dollars an hour before anyone would agree to clean it up. and just as they were going to get start the state health department came in and said the clean up crew needed some sort of haz mat certification and protective gear.

From what I've read, Hurricane refugee's from there are nothing but trouble[In some city in the state of Wisconsin, refugees who had temporerly lived in a house, upon leaving, stole everyting that wasn't nailed down, then came back with tolls to take the stuff that was nailed doen, like sinks and the like.].

We had a little over 2500 here in the town live in staying at the army base in the old barracks. From the minute they got here they complained about the conditions in the barracks - like communal showers and no AC - and when the military buses took them into town so they wouldn't just be cooped up, but drove them to the mall and Wal-Mart, a large number of them proceeded to get busted for shop lifting and then had the gall to gripe about getting busted since they "thought they were guests here."

Ungrateful twits, and my tax dollars are paying for it. Next time, let 'em stay home and loot their own stores and gripe about the the living conditions with no electricity and 4' of water in their living room.

Sounds bad, but $20,000?

I can't imagine 300 people could do that kind of damage in four days. The janitor at one of my old schools who had to walk around in a haz-mat hood sweeping feces and pouring bleach over urine deposits when hantavirus was a big deal probably didn't earn $20k in a year.

At this rate, we should inter the deceased with magnets and line their caskets with copper wire. Think of the electricity that could be generated from corpses spinning like that!

Out of the $20,000 you pay, half goes to taxes. Then half is the cleaning company's administration; white-collar office plankton that just shuffles papers and takes calls, but gets paid more than $20k. Out of the rest, half is materials used in cleaning, transport expenses, and so on. And the remaining $2,500 is what the cleaners probably get - an expected wage for a crew of 5 working a couple days (keep in mind they don't get to work and earn daily).

Meh on the flip side, these victims have been uprooted and overnight transported to a different State placed with a huge roomfull of strangers. Being neat and tidey, although it certianly would have been nice, was probably low on the list of peoples concerns. Generally, people dont yell at other people for bleeding on the carpet. If your an addict, your not going to suddenly stop doing drugs when youve been relocated to a strange place in the middle of the night. Since when do you have an expectation of an addict to behave responsibly? Dirty underwear? Gee, people transported across state lines in an emergency situation with people scared and probably limited access to bathrooms and people who are sick with diareah etc is it suprise that there was dirty underwear there? Should people ideally have been neat and tidey? Yes. Has anything during a natural disaster ever been neat and tidey in the history of humanity? I highly doubt it. The moral of the story is, pay the $20,000, realize that humanity was suffering and they wernt nessesarily at thier Sunday best due to being exposed to unusual stress and strain and stop making an issue of it.
