Interesting development. It is also interesting that the bombers were trailed the entire flight to Venezuela. What do you think? Just a stunt pulled by the Russians or are we going to be seeing a Russian base pop up in South America sometime soon?

Russia is hardly communist anymore. If anything it's more of an autocracy or plutocracy. Probably a stunt or a stopover.

No, they're going to do some "exercises" with the Venezuelans, according to Putin. He insists, however, that it is not a response to the US sailing warships around the Black Sea, but is something that was scheduled a long time ago.

Beats me, but they're obviously seriously mentally deficient if they think those bombers would ever have a chance of harming the US. Talk about a waste of money.

It seems as though the Russians are mirroring the US by building a "Defensive" base to protect them from US missiles as the US put a base in Poland to protect the west from middle-eastern/eastern missile attacks. Heck, this situation could be comparable to the Cuban missile crisis.

The message isn't for the U.S. It's more for Venezuela's neighbors, Colombia in particular.

Yes, but if they try anything in Colombia we're going to get involved too. I highly doubt we'd let the Russians move in our sphere of influence.

Just Russia trying to bring back the glory days. Its kinda like that one guy at the Class reunion that's hitting on girls half his age.

The US would be quick to respond to a attack on Columbia from Venezuela. I also don't think the Russians would have a free pass at setting up bases in our sphere either. History has proven what the US would do, examples being Cuba and Grenada.

Something I thought would be funny is if the US offered to build a base in Columbia to "shoot down rogue missiles". Would be a great counter.

Yes I know that guy. However he doesn't realize he has "phail" written on his forehead.

Yeah, yeah, and that guy at the class reunion has tons of money and some frighteningly powerful connections-- but, he still has "phail" written all over him.

a bigger news story is afoot

one might see the irony

he was also a complete thug at school and has never worked a day in his life despite his success :(

...and then you bump into him as you walk past the petrol station (you can only afford to walk)...with his brand new car and have to be all nice instead of wrapping that petrol pump around his neck and making it look like he was coming right for you

That's good enough for me. Politicians never lie. ;)

nstead of wrapping that petrol pump around his neck and making it look like he was coming right for you

Which wouldn't really be feasible because he has half a dozen bodyguards who can twist you like a pretzel.

Good. I honestly hope Russia becomes a badass superpower again. In fact, I'm not sure I'd object to them trying to re-establish the USSR. Putin would be my hero if he could make that happen. The world is boring without a cold war.

International cock waving. We've been doing it to Russia and Venezuela for some time. Russia is just doing it back.

Putin knows better than to bring it back to the shitty command economy under the CCCP. We might still have a cold war, just with Russia and the U.S.

I was referring more to the idea of bringing states like Georgia back into Russia's complete control.
