Music videos that I like...

"If you Keep Losing Sleep" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xgb9iqO_pv4&feature=related) by Silverchair (nice and theatrical, goes well with the song)
"And now I will" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3KFy9XBy1oI)by Another Messiah (this scared the shit out of me the first time I watched it, but thats more because I'm very easily scared than anything else, though again it works well with the song)

And finally...probably the only music video to make me cry when watching it. I'd say this is by far my favourite though.
"Viðrar vel til loftárása (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HgSrMUQyhwQ&feature=related)" by Sigur Rós.

I, of course, will nominate three videos:

This. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeHwgR8pQhg&feature=related)

A performance video? Best ever? If you say so. If you like the song, I can't argue with you, but as a video, it's just about as average as you can get.

This guy wins the internets. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65I0HNvTDH4)

And just to finish it off... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtXN_EHPwSg)

Now you're talkin' -- though it still has the typical performance video thing going on, at least there's a semblance of a story being told spliced in to make it interesting.

So what about it NSGers? Favorite music video, not necessarily for the music but for the.. Um... Video-ness of it?

Seems to me that the "video-ness" of a video requires it to be more than just a filmed performance. Even if a performance is filmed in a unique way (Steve Winwood's "Higher Love", while a mediocre pop song, got video play because the editing techniques were novel at the time), I think it makes a better video than just filming you lip-synching (example: Van Halen is a good band, but the video for "Jump" is really boring to watch for that very reason...now "Hot For Teacher"? Now you're talkin').

Call me crazy, but a video needs -- compelling video of some sort.

Take Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqyc37aOqT0), for example. Weird, but wonderfully watchable and amazingly assembled.

And what else made A-ha's "Take On Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMWXyEHoN88&feature=related) more than a bit of blip on the pop radar, but the amazing 2000+ drawings in the story-driven video?

Love or hate or indifferent the songs, you asked about videos, and I can easily appreciate a good video pairing even if I hate the song.

"Push Button" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5GcZHxXTW90&feature=related]) by Stolen Babies is another good video I left off my first list. The style of the video reminds me of Tim Burton films a bit.

Also "Radio Girl" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VfWXo9gKYJ0) by Volbeat. Quite simple, but I like the comic-book style and it adds to the oddly nostalgic feel of the song.

Maybe it's safe again now, but for a long time liking Eurythmics was considered very, very uncool. But of course that was RL and the last time I heard anyone say anything about them was years ago.

A good music video causes people to buy music. It's like a commercial for music. As you may know, it's fine for commercials to be very annoying, what matters is that they are remembered.

Following that line of reasoning, I give you one of the best videos ever made (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVxO5kvlZRY). Because, like goatse, I'm never going to forget that (the problem I have with it is not near the beginning).

That may be how the labels and the RIAA sell it, but a good music video is concerned with either outlining the story of the song, having fun with the band members in a situation not usually seen in standard concerts, or is in some way an artistic representation of the song or the artists' vision thereof. To judge a video by how well it "sells the song" is really kinda shallow, but that's my opinion, and I know for a fact that I'm solidly in the minority when it comes to art and society.

Finally getting to a comp that can play this vid, I have to disagree. This is just a scenario that is terrifically meshed with the parody nature of the song itself. Having a dance club in a bathroom, especially the way TBG did it is hilarious. Loved the dog.
