Suits

So, I decided that I need a fancy suit, a three piece suit, a tie, shirt, and dress coat. So far, I am thinking of all black, mainly because I like black, I really like black. Although my friend thinks I should at least get a red tie. We'll see. I'm going to buy it because I want to, I'll wear it to all appropriate functions, and I plan to have it for a long time.

So, who else has brought three pieces suit? Why did you buy it, where did you wear it to, and do you still have it?

I bought a suit a few years ago to wear to my brothers wedding. Nice dark-dark-blue w/ pinstripes and a silvery-gray tie.

I've worn it twice, to my brothers wedding, and to my cousins wedding...it is now hanging in my closet.

I'm pretty sure the third piece in a three piece suit refers to a vest...ah, yep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suit_(clothing)#Number_of_pieces).

I believe the last suit I owned was this green number I wore with a green silk shirt and tie, that went with my green goatee. It was a great way to make a splash at a family wedding where I hadn't been seen in years. It set the stage for not having to see them for a reallly long time.

All black suit or all black with red tie is going to make you look like a poser.

And this is coming from a guy who wore a green suit.

No question marks, so I didn't have to leave clues to what I was going to do later...

Yea, I just don't like brightly color clothes. Too cheerful Plus, I'm kinda going after a specific look.

That's not helping the 'not poser' argument much, I gotta be honest.

Important question you have to ask yourself, are you buying a suit, or a costume? If the latter, then by all means dress yourself up like an over the top bad guy in a hacky movie. If the former, avoid uni-color. Unless of course you're trying to justify not going to family functions for a few years.

Ok, what would you recommend, and keep in mind, the following colors are out.

Yellow, Pink, White.

A black suit? why? Are you wanting to try out for a part in Reservoir Dogs II?
Or do you enjoy ppl thinking you've just come back from a funeral?
Go for charcoal grey. Can't go wrong with a nice charcoal grey pinstripe.

If you do go for the black suit, get a bowler hat to wear with it. Then at least you salvaging some style.

Dude, I'm color blind and still know that there is more to the spectrum than black, pink, yellow, and white.

I don't think I've ever even seen a yellow suit.

You won't be 'defying' me if you get an all black suit. You'll just look like a poser. I don't care what you look like. You raised the subject, I let you know. What you do with it is up to you. I don't have to show up with you.

Got mine at Men's Warehouse. It's gray with a tinge of olive green. I have a blue dress shirt and a gold tie.

I've worn it at four events, if my memory serves:
My graduation
Homecoming
Halloween (as a lawyer costume)
My cousin's wedding

Anyway, my limited fashion advice is to pick a shirt color that complements your jacket. If you have a black jacket, get a white shirt. And don't pick a plain-colored tie - make sure it has some kind of pattern.

I do love suits though I only have two now after my favourite was torn. That one was kind of grey/brown with.... a bright orange and black lining. It was the best suit and then some idiot tore it...

I specifically buy suits to stand out but in a classy kind of way. I have the tastes of a prince, the pockets of a pauper.

Me. Grey, wool. I bought it because a man is supposed to have a decent suit, usable in formal occasions (but not excessively so). Wore it sometimes, of course cold seasons only, mostly mornings and afternoons (I tend to prefer blue or black for evenings, but I used it once at New Year's Eve). Usually with a white shirt, black shoes and matching belt, and a blue or bordeaux tie. Very simple.

I think they do pretty much upon wearing them.

Obviously another cool idea would be wearing a Persian-style suit, which you wear without a tie.

Gah, don't remind me! I was best man at my friend's wedding last Saturday. Didn't get home until late Friday night so I could only test-dress my suit on Saturday.

Turns out that I put on about 15 pounds during the time I wrote my exam paper and I wouldn't fit into the frigging suit anymore. (Luckily my dad could help me out).

Anyway, looking around at the wedding I noticed that the best-looking suits were indeed the three piece suits. So the next one I'll get will definitely have a vest.

But before I'll go shopping, I'll reduce my waistline again.

my husband has a black suit. it makes him look like an undertaker.

some kind of dark charcoal gray is a better choice.

take someone with you who knows the elements of how a suit is supposed to fit--sleeve length, over-all length, fit across the shoulders--and is willing to speak up if the salesman is lying to you about how good it looks on you. ive had salesman try to sell my husband jackets that were too long, too small around the middle, that bunched up at the back of his neck and they SWORE they looked great.

dont be too cutting edge if you want to wear it for years. fashion changes too quickly.

I see no problem with a black suit.

All black, however, looks...well...stupid. Black 3 piece suit, red or French blue shirt...Jerry Garcia tie always looks nice.

If you are planning on having it for a while, go for a classic look rather than more trendy...two button, well tailored.

I used to have a 3-piece. Very good for pulling off a darker or more formal look, and you can always not wear the vest.

Now I have a black 3-button suit. I don't tend to wear them often, so black covers all needs better. I do more variety in sport coats

I never understood the point in the first place; it isn't like I can't just close the window immediately after I notice what it is. I mean with goatse (or something similar) the first glance is all it takes to get a reaction, but the first two or three seconds of a music video aren't going to hurt anyone.

At one of my best friend's wedding about ten years ago, I needed a tuxedo so I bought my first tux. I then showed up at the wedding wearing the tux and a liberal coating of swamp mud. Since then, while I haven't worn tuxes, that began a long-held tradition of me showing up to weddings covered in mud. And to this day, I have done so to every wedding except one: My own. I think I've bought one suit with a vest, but I've never worn the vest. It's just not practical or comfortable -- depending on how long you expect to be in the thing. Just a good jacket and trousers are far more useful. And I'd recommend pin-stripes over a solid color. And probably a charcoal gray, or navy over solid black.
