And another bites the dust!

Guess what, the Japanese Prime Minister, Yasuo Fukuda, just resigned. He didn't even last out a full year.

Wow. Japan is switching PMs faster than Italy did in the '70s.

Well, to be fair, PM Koizumi (Two PMs ago) lasted 5 years, but, yup. Japan has a revolving door installed at the PM's official residence.

Is the job something like that old Queen Mother/Best Man's joke. (this joke was written when she was still alive! :p).

Why is being asked to be a Best Man like being asked to sleep with the Queen Mother? It's a great honour, but no one actually wants to do it.

I didn't understand why Koizumi had to leave. He wasn't a horrible PM, judging from the (small) coverage the italian media give to japanese politics.

I know, hark who's talking, since we here ousted good old Prodi quite unceremoniously to replace him with the PsychoDwarf (aka the Presidens Ridens)...

Oh, there's plenty who want to, it's just that Japanese PMs have this remarkable talent to take their feet and insert them firmly into their mouths.

On Fukuda's side though, he did get a rather shitty deal. Abe had left things a mess and the opposition party controls the upper house and automatically opposes ANYTHING he says. In fact, they just released a statement saying that Fukuda shouldn't have quit!

It looks like Aso right now.

Koizumi just had had enough of everything. He also quit while he was ahead of the game.

This would be far more interesting if they not only resigned but did hara-kiri. Add a bit of flair to the whole process.

Rather a surprise. Between the summer holidays, some RL stuff, US politics, and events in another online game, I've only been paying minimal attention to J-polyticks.

Well, if Aso gets the nod, I call pull out the crusty I was saving when he was a possibility last year - "Aso desuka"

(Having officially crossed the line this year, I'm allowed oyajigagu...)

I am going to Japan as part of an intercultural exchange program. It is called Ship for the World's Youth, and contains people of different countries. It had a scheduled meeting with the japanese PM, to discuss different international issues. I don't know if the meeting will remain with a new PM, and even if it will, I should read a bio on the new one. I did my research on Fukuda, and now I have to start over.

That sounds like a lot of fun. If you get a photo op share with the rest of us.

Is that the same thing as Peace Boat, or a different program?

These positions in government do take their toll on a person. I work for the government, not in a position as important as that of PM, but I assure you, there are moments when it gets unbereable. But it´s bummer Fukuda did not last a year at least. He must have his reasons, I guess.

We could do bokke-tsukkomi. But I'll be happy if a manga fan makes it into Japanese PM, if only because of the unfortunate stigma it still carries in Brazil...

The problem is, the internal politics of the ruling Japanese party is so secretive that no one outside the inner circle can ever really know what's going on. Koizumi was so effective because he was capable of transcending his own party; we are unlikely to see another such anytime soon.

Hey, it's not like they had five (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_de_la_R%C3%BAa) presidents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram%C3%B3n_Puerta) in (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolfo_Rodr%C3%ADguez_Sa%C3%A1) two (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_Cama%C3%B1o) weeks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_Duhalde)...
