Music question for the British.

Hey, about a year ago I heard a song called "Rooftops" on the radio, it was by a Welsh rock band called LostProphets, you've probably heard it. I looked up the band later and found myself liking a lot of their songs. Now that was the ONLY time I have EVER heard ANY of their songs on the radio, so I found myself wondering if they were more popular over there.

Oh, and has anyone ever heard of the pop-rockers "Head Automatica?" NYC band.

LostProphets were "big" around my first year of college, 01-02. I actually saw them in concert once, I went to see the opening band. They used to be sort of popular in the numetal scene, but they weren't really hardcore enough to be there (although the time I saw them, they had a pretty kick-ass pit going, so, go LostProphet fans I guess).

I'm not from England, though.

Heh, I don't really think of them as "heavy" at all, just "The Handsome Life of Swing" has a bit of screaming in it. '01-02 is "Last Train Home" era, if I'm not mistaken, which I've heard was a pretty popular song (I don't get the hype, it's not that great) But then again, I've never heard their album, "Start Something" (non-subscription on Napster -.-) which might be heavier, never know.

2 other things... YAY me on being a "Regular" and I heard that they're supposed to come out with a new album sometime this summer/fall (but that was from wikipedia, so I'm not really sure, considering there's nothing on their site about it)

They're a moderately popular band in Britain, their stuff gets played on the radio sometimes, and probably most people here have at least heard of them. I liked their earlier stuff, but like a lot of bands they've gradually removed all the edgyness from their sound over several albums and are now a fairly standard radio-friendly pop-rock band.

Oh of course. I loved their "Fake Sound of Progress" album, but "Liberation Transmission" Wasn't as great (except for "The new transmission", that was pretty good)

ONE MORE THING! Damn "The Libertines" for being insanely popular and no good! *Starts thinking of "Boys Like Girls" and "The Jonas Brothers"*

I can not tell you with what passion I hate the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and anyone ever associated with High School Musical. These are the only things most of my students seem to listen to. I don't know if I have particularly retarded students or what, but when I get my own classroom, it's nothing but Joplin and Cohen and Springsteen for those punks.

Lol... lemme guess... middle school intern? Or whatever it's called when you have to be in the class w/ the real teacher for a while then teach some of their classes and be evaluated.

Or do you have to share a classroom, because that would REALLY suck. And I can tell it's not high school, because every girl here is obsessed with "Boys Like Girls" which I looked up once on Napster, their top 3 songs were horrid.

Lol at The Libertines. I heard somewhere that they paid the NME for extra hype. Would explain a lot. Now, I usually like a tuneless racket, but they were just terrible.

Ahh, that explains it. My cousin is in love with the entire high school musical cast. You should see her room. I think she's like 9 or 11 or something...

Anyways, my favorite neighbor was a sub in my elementary school. She was awesome, we had her for like a month straight when my real 2nd grade teacher was getting married and going on her honeymoon to Disney (because she couldn't have scheduled that during the summer) and once she asked a future druggie if the yellow crayon he ate tasted like a banana.

No, '01/'02 was around the re-release of Fake Sound of Progress, after they'd been getting a bit exposure - it has cleaner production...whether or not that's a good thing is debateable. Last Train Home was late '03/'04. And was pants. I read an interview the band did a couple months after that came out and they said they were turning their backs on metal and wouldn't ever do another metal album. Wankers. It's a shame because TFSoP shows so much promise. Then they've been going downhill and picking up speed since.

burn burn was pretty bitching other than that they have just been one of those annoying emo/indie bands

That's about the truth of it, they where great about 5-6 years ago, now they are more meh-ish.

Never heard of them, but then I don't really care for that skiffle music that young people seem so keen to spend their pocket money on.

They really weren't, though. I know it's fashionable to slate them because they were so overhyped by the NME and, as a result, symbolise what a lot of people hate about British music, but they have some brilliant songs. Death on the Stairs, Tell the King, Vertigo, and Begging spring to mind.

Out of Napster's list of their songs by popularity, only "Tell the King" from that list is on their top 10 songs. Which explains a lot, all their fans like their crappy music forcing them to keep writing crappy music instead of the "good" music you listed (didn't check those out, not gonna check them out, only have 3 MB left on my mp3 player >.<)

I may not be a Briton, but I do have a few bands from the UK in my music collection. I don't think I've ever heard anything from the LostProphets, but it doesn't really seem to be my kind of band. I'll just stick to my discs of Bolt Thrower and Killing Joke, to name two established bands from the Empire that can be found in my music collection.

@ Adunabar: you're kidding, right? Killing Joke is quite relevant when speaking about the British post punk & new wave scene. However, that piece of music history may be of lesser importance to the youngsters of today.

LostProphets are indefensible. The music is unoriginal, unaccomplished and they're another example of the under talented who seem ashamed of where they are from and, in this instance, appear to have constructed West Coast identities because that's cooler.

On the other hand, The Libertines get slated by wise old NSG when they were genuinely talented and put out two good records.

Okay, I'll give you that, the "Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo" In the beginning of a couple of their songs is pointless and annoying.

West Coast of where might I ask. I'm from that state south of New Hampshire and Vermont and north of Connecticut. I've met one person that's heard of them (before this), and that was a British guy on a different forum.

And btw, if you loathe then so much, why not just let the thread die?

The West Coast of the United States. I'm not sure how you meeting or not meeting people who have heard of them has any bearing on that at all.

Except for Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja which was, by common acclaim, A Tune.

Oh yeah, that was a good one, put it on my Lord of the Flies soundtrack (school project)
"And I sit and wonder
Falling under
Get my way or nothing will move on.
Everyone is gone.
You feel so empty but I've got me a friend.
And I like it..."
That right there is (for the most part) completely relevant if you twist it into Ralph's point of view after Jack left. (sorry if I ruined one of the major parts of the plots for people who haven't read it yet, but it's really pretty obvious that Jack's gonna leave)

For all you old school Lostprophets fans:

"Now we have gotten a lot of our pop vibes out of our system, we are fixing for some more old school vibes." Jamie Oliver claimed that the sound the band was making felt and sounded "way more like how we want to be seen and heard".[citation needed]

Unfortunately this was an uncited quote from wikipedia, so I'm not sure how reliable it is, but if its true, it seems like they're gonna be good again *gasps*
