Apparently, comcast plans to limit everyone's internet usage (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080829/wr_nm/comcast_internet_dc) startin this october.

"But, Comcast, I wanna play WoW with my frieeends."
Then a Comcast Customer Service Representative will be sent around my house to prohibit my eating deserts all month.

Which, at the bottom of the article, is considering charging by bandwidth use rather than bandwidth caps and flat rates.

Sure, it's a lot of bandwidth. The issue comes up when it's the type of packet being sent over the wire and what port it's going to.

Bet you they still firewall off port 80 as well as 25 incoming and outgoing traffic

I am glad I dont use them but I see others following suit... oh well I pay for a fiber drop now and unlikely to have any restrictions placed on it

A 24/7 96kb rate isn't so bad. And assuming you sleep and work, using it 8 hours a day is already a lot. So that's about a constant 300kb/s while you're using it.

Its not horrible but there were a few months pulling data down for clients that I would have capped 250 GB in a month ... probably would have had 2 months in the 6 month period

Does anybody know where I can get some sort of usage gauge that I can track my monthly usage?

I have the ability to do it on my routers, and if not I have some alternatives in linux.

For windows I have a friend that swears by this

http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/09/09/how-to-monitor-your-internet-bandwidth-usage-in-windows/

(it is a tutorial on setting it up)
It has an actual monthly total function

You could always switch to another provider, but I have a feeling that 250 GB a month is well beyond what most people use. Unless you're doing a lot of pirating or running a server out of your home.

Servers generally go in the other direction ... with asymmetric links not really an issue

Though that is intresting I dont know if the 250 is both directions ... cause while not great the combo may put more people closer then just one or the other
