Aren't we a bit over the top on this? On the one hand we complain because the kids aren't getting enough exercise while on the other hand we are banning things kids do that are exercise because we "are afraid they will get hurt." :eek2:
Gad, I thought this happened only in the US, but is seems it has spread to Oz. What, are the schools down there afraid of, someone will sue them? Well, I guess people who are afraid their kids will get hurt doing kid thinks should take their kids, wrap them in bubble wrap, stick them in a closet, and not let them out until they are 18 years old.

When I was in school 20 years ago (Elementary school) they banned arm wrestling. For fear of broken arms. Sure I could get jumped by two older boys and no one saw a damn thing, but arm wrestle a guy and there's teachers swarming.

That I can understand. Skate boarding is much more dangerous than cartwheels etc. and you can hurt bystanders. Skateboarding is OK but not in public places such as playgrounds or parking lots. Our city built a very nice skateboard park and it is open to the public.

And radiation suits when you go outside, 'cause of all that nasty sunlight! Terrible for your health that stuff. Causes cancer.

Well, no, obviously, and I'm sure they'll reconsider. They're hardly the first group of school officials to overreact.

They shouldn't ban it, and don't forget, Australia is home to the mall that banned Father Christmases from saying ho ho ho in case it offended women.

They should just pack all children in styrofoam and bubblewrap until they're eighteen and be done with it.

I guess some of the stupidity from the US "we have to do it to save the children" has spread.

sounds like the school got bored of all the injuries to me which is perfectly fair if they are getting enough trouble from it

well yes one should avoid sending young children out in midday sun

Its all about the cost if a child injures themself. Suddenly the school was not paying enough attention in its "duty of care".

Now days people get sued over all kinds of small things. We need to have a "shit happens" and a "your an idiot" defence to stop these law suits and thus enable freedom again.

can't really call kids idiots now

but seriously carers have a responsibility to risk management and if the risk becomes too great something has to be done

I think I know how the new schools in 20 years will look like.

Everyone wears styrofoam underwear, Kevlar vest, jacket and pants. Industrial boots with metal inserts, but covered with half a foot of styrofoam on the outside so they don't break anything.

Uniforms are stored in school. Kids enter one by one, through airlocks, where they strip down, give their street wear to the officer (for drug traces search) and put on the uniform. To prevent them from hiding stuff in uniforms, they're not personal and selected on random basis.

All exercise is done in individual cubicles, separated by mesh. No loose heavy metal objects, exercise machines only. No laboratory classes, any demonstration done through video. Classrooms with soft walls and small windows near the ceiling, optionally with bars.
Chairs bolted to the floor, with seatbelts, that can only be unlocked by the teacher. Boxing gloves, secured by handcuffs, unlocked only after the seatbelt is on, if the class involves writing. No ladders, only elevators, all centrally controlled, carrying the whole class up or down to their classroom.

Oh my God, children could get hurt when they're playing! But hey, let's not do anything when children are psychologically damaged by their equals thanks to the cryptofascist art of bullying, because that builds character.

Fortunately I've got the ultimate cure: sterilize everyone. When no children are being born, none of them can be accidentally hurt or wounded. Rejoice!

We should ban idoits from being allowed to have a say how a school works.

Why am I not surprised by this news?

It is a disgrace but what do you expect from sad teachers who have nothing better to do with their lives.

That is fucking stupid.

Why not just put kids in a giant bubble their entire lives?

Goddamn, the next generation is going to be a generation of fucking pussies because of shit like this.

I wouldn't have thought so, I remember a girl at my school broke her collarbone falling out of a cartwheel.

Things wouldn't get banned if people didn't think they could sue for any minor injury/accident. Our NHS spends a fortune on defending stupid law suits rather than putting the money into primary care. Schools must complete so many health and safety assessments that ALL outdoor activity will soon be banned
I blame the lawyers, and those stupid 'where there's blame there's a claim' type adverts, and I blame the government for creating such a nanny state

I'd say most people who skateboarded in their past have broken, sprained, or badly bruised at least some part of their body, though.
