2008 Summer Movies Thread

Now that the Summer of 2008 is all but over for most, and seeing as I just saw Tropic Thunder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropic_Thunder). I've decided to make the first of possibly annual threads where people talk about the best movies of the summer.

Poll is Coming Soon to a thread near you. Since I only have ten options I'm only putting big name movies in the poll and giving a big "fuck you" to less known films. Also I wanna see how many of all the big movies that came out that people actually saw.

What I saw:
Ironman
The Incredible Hulk
Hellboy II
The Dark Knight
Tropic Thunder

I really wanted to see Indiana Jones, Narnia, Get Smart and Pineapple Express.

"I'm a lead farmer mother fucker."

Best line of any movie I've seen all year.

yeah lolz. Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise were the best parts of that movie.

The Dark Knight and Pineapple Express were my favorites.

Ironman and the Dark Knight were epic. Get smart was alright. Indiana Jones 4 failed on a grand scale. And I really want to see tropic thunder and Pineapple express.

I guess if one is a die hard IJ fan it was alright, I just didn't like it.

The only movie I've seen in theaters this summer is Wall-E, which was adorable. I'm poor; I'll see the rest (well, some of the rest) when they come out on video.

WALL-E was actually incredibly entertaining, if you can get beyond the very bludgeoning agenda.

So you leave off Hellboy 2 and put on clunkers like Get Smart and Wanted??

I'll rate what I've seen this summer...

Dark Knight: 9.5 / 10
Iron Man: 9 / 10
Hellboy 2: 8 / 10
Incredible Hulk: 7.5 / 10
Indiana Jones: 5 / 10

The only one I regretted paying theater price for was Indiana Jones...the rest were all sorts of awesome.

I didn't see any of them in the theatre, largely due to the lack of such things here. I did snag up bootleg DVDs of The Dark Knight and Iron Man, which I liked a lot. I just got Hellboy 2 the other day but I haven't watched it yet.

I haven't seen any of them, and it's Winter here anyway. :)

Wanted, if it's about that Wanted I'm thinking about, was magnificent. Really. Dumb as fuck, totally devoid of any common sense whatsoever, and with the story that could have been written by 13-year-old. Not an inch short of brilliance! :hail:

I absolutely loved "In Bruges", although that was very early summer...
Wall-E was very entertaining as well.

I didn't really bother with anything else this summer, there wasn't anything interesting around.

Went to see Ironman and ironically missed my dad who was sitting in the same showing. I liked it, but was a bit annoyed by how carelessly violence by the hero is treated in the movie. The Dark Knight was friggin amazing.

Only ones on the list I saw was Wall E and the Indiana Jones 4. Now.. I never kept up with Indiana Jones series.. so I didn't know what was coming or going... but even I could tell it was grasping.. although I did like the last hour.

WALL-E was good.

Some of the others I plan on renting.

What agenda was that?

The rather overpowering message of where humanity is heading if we don't change our consumption habits.

I didn't (ie couldn't afford to) go anywhere this Summer so other than kayaking, movies were my only form of vacation. As a result I watched loads:
Dark Knight: Thoroughly enjoyable, I give it 4/5.
Iron Man: Really really enjoyed it. One of the best Superhero movies made imo. Introduced his origin while keeping the action flowing. 4.5/5.
Hellboy 2: As good as the original, if not better. Another 4.5/5
Incredible Hulk: Much better than the original (it could hardly have been worse!) but still lacking something. I dunno - Norton just doesn't come across as Banner in my mind. I know he's almost 40 but he still looks young - too young to play Banner (who I think is early/mid-40s). That said I always like seeing Tim Roth and Ed Norton - damn fine actors; 3/5
Indiana Jones IV:I enjoyed it. Wasn't expecting much else than silliness from start to finish and that's what I got. Total escapism. Ending was pretty much identical to Indiana I which was a let down; 3/5
Get Smart: I really liked this one. Good honest slapstick running throughout. Having Steve Farrell as Smart was inspired. Only beef I have is that it made him out to be too good, just a little clumsy and inept. iirc, Smart in the TV show was just totally inept but very lucky; 3.5/5
Mummy III:Was better than Mummy II and not a bad way to waste an afternoon; 3/5
Journey to Center of the Earth: Saw it in 3D, which adds 1 star giving it a grand total of 3/5.
Wall-E: Another good movie from Pixar. Only real fault is that it felt like two movies in one - 1st half is poignant subtle humor, 2nd 1/2 is pure slapstick. Almost like they realised they didn't have enough material to make 2 full-length movies, so just stuck the two together. 4/5

Overall, one of the best Summers in a long while for entertaining, escapist movies. No real dud in there.
Haven't seen REC yet, but looking forward to doing so!

I'd say "In Bruges" was more of a spring movie than a summer, at least, that's when I recall having seen it. Needless to say, it was excellent.

True... but it was the only good movie all year so far. :(

Wall-e was the best of those i saw, and one of the best i've seen in a long while

The Dark Knight tried to do too much and was too long/too sporadic

Indiana Jones was alright

Iron Man was shite - made worse by the lead character being an asshole

that's about all i've seen this summer, as far as i can remember. wouldn't mind seeing Hellboy 2

Iron Man and Wall-E were my two favourites.
Indiana Jones was alright.
The Dark Knight bored the crap out of me. It's too long and they tried to cram in too much plot.
The Incredible Hulk made me laugh all the way through. I don't think that was it's intention :P

I'm going to see Get Smart later this week, and I want to see Tropic Thunder when it comes out over here (mid-September I think)

That does the ones on your poll, as for other movies I've seen recently...
Journey to the Centre of the Earth - I really enjoyed it.
Hellboy 2 - I expected this to be crap, but was surprised. Not the greatest film but it was enjoyable.
You Don't Mess With the Zohan - May I note that it wasn't my choice to go see this movie :P Rubbish.
The Mummy - enjoyable
X Files - disappointing. I hoped it would be alright...but I think deep down I knew :(
Mamma Mia - I loved this so much. It was made even more enjoyable by the two girls sat behind us who talked on their phones all the way through the previews...then when the movie started exclaimed "Oh my God are they going to sing Abba songs all the way through?!" then got up and left :D

Life must be tough for you if you get put off things so easily. It wasn't propoganda, it was just an interesting setting for a movie.

My poll is nothing more than a shallow popularity contest. and from what I've heard (not on NSG) people liked Wanted and Get Smart (it made more moneys). Hellboy II was a great movie though, I loved the beer drinking scene with HB and Abe.

I thought Iron Man was pretty good. Stark didn't come across nearly as much a dick as he could have. More as a billionaire playboy than a self righteous asshole.

As I haven't seen Wall-E, the only possible answer is The Dark Knight. Absolutely brilliant. I rarely if ever go back and see a movie twice in theaters; I've already seen TDK three times. It's that good.

The Dark Knight: Oscars all around.
Hellboy II: Great film, superior to the original. More serious.
Iron Man: Awesome. Robert Downey Jr. is a great actor.
Prince Caspian: Very good film, in fact. The final battle scene was great.
Indiana Jones 4: I saw this in a hotel room. I didn't like the aliens part, but it was still fun. The chase scene was great.
