Oy, things just keep getting worse and worse for me and computer technology; there was a time when I was the resident techno-geek of my house and dorm, a computer programmer who, though nowhere near an expert, was still well above the norm. In fact, for the first three years that I played NS I actually used a web-browser that I, myself, programmed. Unfortunately, as time goes on I not only don't advance, but I actually seem to be receding in skill when it comes to computers and computer technology, and I'm now well behind the norm, and am once again stuck on a basic task that I ask you, the resident techno-geeks of NS, to help me with.
Well, my laptop went kaput last week. Actually, it's not the whole laptop, just the monitor, but without a working monitor the entire thing is just a shiny paperweight. At nearly four years old I suppose it should be expected to malfunction sooner or later, so I took it in to get repaired and, long story short (Or is it already too late?) it would cost at least $300 to fix (Parts and service, etc.). So, since this was the second problem this summer, and we're already nearing the cost of a new laptop, I decided to just buy a new laptop (I suppose I could have just written "I bought a new laptop last week" and left out this whole paragraph).
Now, most of my important data is already on my external hard-drive, so the shift from old-to-new laptop hasn't been that traumatic (Although the hassle of downloading five different media players to play my videos was something that I could have skipped), and right now I've begun to install some of my games which, although I don't play overmuch anymore, are still a pleasure. Unfortunately, not one has functioned properly on this monitor. Before you say it, it's not an equipment malfunction, but a software error. My current dispay is 1280x800, and most of my games seem to be displayed in 800x600, which means that they're just a small box in the middle of my screen, not exactly helpful when you're trying to blow up a Shivan fighter (Props for whoever gets the reference). Adjusting my monitor display made one of my games work properly, but I simply can't work with that full time, and I can already tell that switching back and forth every time I play this game will be too much. My old laptop, and my old old laptop that I used back in High School, would automatically make that switch whenever you started the game, displaying full-screen just fine without manually adjusting the display, and this computer just won't do it.
Once upon a time I would have known how to do this in my sleep (Or at least within a light doze), or been able to figure it out by going through the game/system code and settings, but right now I am just lost. Anybody know how to get this computer to display properly?
