I've recently bought the Xbox 360 and GTA IV for it.it's a great game and a good console but there are technical issues.first, there's the ''Red Ring of Doom'',which is known by pretty much everyone and is dreaded by every 360 owner.it means that it has found a fatal error and doesn't work anymore.then there's lesser problems such as overheating, disk scratching, video failures, jammed disk trays, save game errors and Unplayable Disc errors.so,who here has an Xbox 360 and who has had technical problems with it?
here's an IGN article on it:http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/673/673686p1.html.see the rest of the article series.

That article is three years old and about the launch system. Anyway, how many red segments are there on your ring? 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Well as long as you treat it well and don't try to flash it or anything, it should be fine. I've had mine for a while now and not a single problem has happened. The only people I know who has had their console RROD is those with consoles more than a year old, and they could usually get it fixed for free.
If you've bought your Xbox within a year it should be fine.

I'd worry more about the glitch where games randomly freeze during the loading sequence, Bill Gates appears on the screen, climbs out the TV set, then brutally murders the players.

A few weeks ago my Xbox flashed red in 2 quadrants indicating an overheat. Unfortunately, I had been on vacation for a week, so overheating obviously wasn't the problem. As it turns out, the fan died leading to an immediate overheat every time I turned the console on. It's evidently quite rare.
I called up customer support and sent it in for repairs. I got it back in about 2 weeks good as new, and everything was covered by my warranty--say what you will about Microsoft, but that customer service was excellent.

Gives you a fair chance, though still fraught with danger. On some consoles, evil Bill has a paper-clip shaped assistant who provides him with all sorts of high-tech computer-generated body armour and weaponry. If you hear the words "Bill, it looks like you are trying to commit another vicious killing, would you like me to help?" then be warned: this assistant is virtually indestructible, but players often make the mistake of focusing all their gunfire upon him, such is their desire to get him to shut the hell up. This error can be, quite literally, fatal.

Or you can put an IMac notebook down on the floor in front of the TV. Cheaper, less violent and works like salt on Haitian Zombis.

oh,haha.
I've never had a single real problem with my 360, and I've had mine since x-mas. The only time there was a problem was when I tried putting an x-box "cooler" on it. It caused a red ring, but only when it was set on there. When I took it off, the unit worked fine. So, x-box is a relatively good system to use.
BTW, I suggest you download the demo for the Force Unleashed. By far, its going to be the best game of the year.

I bought my Xbox 360 on launch day and I still haven't gone away. It's broke a few times sure, but Microsoft's customer support and shipping speed are great. I usually got my Xbox 360 back after only 1 and half weeks.

I've since it's launch, owned six x-boxes. The average time till breakdown was seven months.
If you buy an x-box, you're going to have to expect that it'll break. Don't be upset when it does, just send it away and get a new one.
That being said, I only bought the cooling fan for my most recent one, and it's far outlasted all the others.

I had the "Red Ring of Death" on mine once. I had to send it away to Microsoft for about a week or two. Since then it's worked fine, except it has frozen on me a few times.

I'm afraid I know nearly nothing about microsofts returns policy in Finland*. Please forgive me for my weakness.
*I'd hazard a guess to say that they would though. I'm in an EU country, and I've never had a problem with getting a replacment.

I bought mine at BestBuy with replacement plan and both times ive turned in Xbox with technical problems ive recieved a new xbox on the spot and $50 in cash because they dropped the purchase price that much prior to each failure. Cant beat that.
I had a 360 for overa year before I got the RROD, I got mine back prtty quickly.
However, my 360 has been boxed for nearly three months since I bought my PS3 and I'm proably gonna sell my 360 since I see no reason to switch back.

You would be surprised at how much that varies
I don't own the console but deal with their Tech support for server class solutions a few times a year and you get the normal range of either nice and not helpful or smart but a knowitall ass that gets it wrong because they did not listen to you
Such is life though, at least i get to cut ahead of the line :)

i'm on my third 360... two RRODs, each about a year apart. the first was replaced in-store (at Game) with a retailer warranty. the second was replaced (for free) after sending back to Microsoft (for free)... it took about 10 days from sending to getting it back. was quite pleased - it would have been better if it didn't break in the first place, but they couldn't have been much better about it
no problems since *holds breath*
though if this one did break again, it would be a good excuse to by a 360 Elite ;)

I bought one used and it RROD'ed on me about two months in due to a marathon ES: Oblivion session. I sent it off and got a new one back that's been fine for a year now. Microsoft recognized the problems the console had pretty quickly and extended their warranty to about three years for a manufacturing defect, IIRC.

I waited six months after launch because, well, it's Microsoft. I mean, they don't put anything out that doesn't require patching and repairs. By the time I bought mine, they must have ironed out all the problems because I haven't had a single problem with it. It's been a fantastic system.
As for the Ring of Bill Gates problem, I've found that surrounding yourself with Apple products only enrages him further. Although, he does get distracted when he's destroying all those products, allowing you to run.
But don't expect to get far.
I'm still waiting to respawn. Ah, finally.

Ah the ancient Sumerian glyph for "your itching rectum is because you have thread worms".
I own a 360 Elite that I got for Christmas of 2007. And unfortunately, after more than 7 months, it has the RRoD. I was quite surprised, because I thought that the Elite had superior hardware specs to a Premium 360 and was therefore immune to RRoD. What really sucks is that I bought my Elite from Sharper Image, which as everyone now knows is now bankrupt and non-existent. So I can't just go their store, show my receipt and make them take care of my 360.
And then I got into a nightmare situation of customer service. This is what happened: I called Xbox customer support the morning i found out my Elite got the RRoD. Everything went fine, I registered my 360 for repair and for a box to be sent to my house (the Coffin,as it's known around my school) in about 2-3 days.
Then, this is where things started to go wrong. It's actually not Microsoft's fault. What happened was that I left out my apartment number in my address, and I only noticed this when the shipping box didn't come after those days. So I called customer service about a week after my first call, and they managed to fix my address. But, they had to cancel my original repair order, and were instead going to email me a shipping label that I would print out and put on a box that I would provide when I shipped my 360. Just as customer service was confirming this.... My phone died.
I checked my email for the shipping label, but it never came. I checked the original repair order, and found that it hasn't been canceled. It's apparently stuck in the first phase. Next, I tried to register my 360 online. But when I tried to submit it, an error ocured that most likely has to do with the fact that I registered my serial number twice. So I emailed the online customer support, and got back an vague answer:
If you previously registered your console with Xbox Support, but the console does not appear under Registered Devices, follow these steps:
a. Click Associate a device you registered on the phone with your Windows Live ID.
b. Enter the serial number of the console and the name that you used when you previously registered the console.
c. Click Submit.
Umm... so where exactly do I find the 1st part? Do I associate my 360 on the phone or over the internet?! I emailed them again asking for clarification, and this is what I got:
Calling our phone support team. Please provide your console serial number so that we may be able to check the warranty and process a repair for your console. The phone representative will be able to discuss with you the policies.
ยท Signing on to http://service.xbox.com/ using your Windows Live ID account and processing the repair online. (This is currently available to US customers only.)
So now, I'm stuck in a limbo. I've tried to recently call customer support again, but for some reason (maybe it's because it was on a weekend?) when I try to request an agent it just brings me back to the main menu. So... help me please?
