Good, simple cocktails

Title says it all, but I might as well go on, because I do so like to see myself write. I'm looking for simple (2-5 ingredients and without any complicated measures/proportions/serving directions) cocktail recipes that taste good and won't make me sound like a complete tit when I offer them to people visiting my dorm. I figure, given the number of drinkers on NSG, there should be plenty of recipes floating around.

My favorite drinks are Screwdrivers (made with Absolut) and Cuba Libres (made with Brugal), which should demonstrate both my tastes and the sort of recipes I'm looking for.

1 Jigger Gin (I like Bombay Sapphire)
1 Pony Sloe Gin
Fill rest of glass with 7-UP, serve with ice

Well, considering my favorites are Screwdrivers and Cuba Libres, I can't really help you. Other than the fact that root beer makes a good mixer with vanilla vodka, that is.

equal parts: vodka, gin, rum, tequilla, triple sec. fill glass with sour mix, spalsh of coke.
name: long island iced tea

Cuba Libre is always with bacardi, otherwise it is rum and coke.

Gin and tonic

almost anything and sprite

almost anything and ginger ale

Gin...

Yeah... just gin...

However, martinis are very easy, and very classy.
-As many parts gin as you like
-Tiniest splash of vermouth
Serve.

If you want to step away from the citrus drinks (and I too enjoy Amaretto sours), I suggest an Old Fashioned (although you may need to experiment to decide how you like it). Essentially, it is composed of the following:

Whiskey
Bar Syrup (or sugar) and Soda Water (Sprite can serve, but it's not the same)
Several (5-8) shakes of angostura bitters (the most important ingredient)

Traditional recipes also call for an orange slice and a cherry to be mangled up on the bottom, but I hate that. You can drink it without additions. I personally like it with cocktail mushrooms or olives.

The angostura bitters is definitely worth buying; it lasts forever and makes a big change to the flavor of a drink, which can be handy when you're experimenting with your own concoctions.

The perfect martini:

1 glass of chilled gin
1 olive garnish
Drink while staring intently at a bottle of Vermouth.

the trotsky:
about a third of a glass of equal parts rum and vodka, add some ice, fill most of the rest of the way with rootbeer. add a splash of gin if you have it, though this isn't technically necessary.

it tastes like flat rootbeer. if you aren't careful, you wind up drinking as if it was just rootbeer. which is where it got its name - we drank a few too many too quickly when we invented it. wham, like an icepick to the fucking forehead.

There's a delicious cocktail that a bar in the City makes that I've never seen anywhere else, but it does take a little fuss. It's basil and blackberry with vodka, bitters and ginger beer. Amazing, and you can not taste the alcohol (they use high quality stuff).

On that note: If you are an undergrad, especially in your first two years, Absolut is a respectable choice and one your friends will thank you for. Skyy was generally the best anyone did my frosh year. However, if you can afford it, I'd suggest Ketel One as an upgrade. Runs about $22 bucks a bottle. There are better, but it's a good mid-high vodka.

Manhattan: Two ounces of rye whisky(bourbon also works really, really well), one ounce of vermouth, a dash of Angostura bitters (available in any supermarket), shake in a martini shaker or serve on the rocks. Garnish with maraschino cherry.

Rusty nail: Equal parts whisky and Cointreau. Serve on the rocks with a twist of orange.

Moscow mule: Two ounces of vodka and the juice of half a lime, fill the glass with ginger beer.

Those are my old standbys, anyway. Smoky martinis (substitute a splash of whisky with some or all of your vermouth) are good, too.

Seriously, serving cocktails, will that be followed by a discussion on Kierkegaard - existentialist or postmodernist - possibly catch a Ingmar Bergman film after?

Surely your butler will have a few cocktails under his sleeve?

Dirty Martini - Vodka, Vermouth and brine - you then have lots of olives to eat as well. Vodka is versatile for the end when you have no more vermouth but plenty of Coke or Sprite.

In a couple of years, the Dirty Martini will be the celebrated drink in all the magazines, much as the Mojito has been for the past few years, for now it's favoured merely by the few.

My family is big into them though we go a bit different route

Use Canadian whiskey (3 to 1 ratio instead of 2 to 1) and add a bit of the cherry juice to it but otherwise the same

Also note that we use sweet vermouth for a regular Manhattans but there are many different forms using dry or combinations. (I still prefer sweet). Also have run into many areas where ordering "A Manhattan" means a brandy Manhattan

If that is more your style simply replace whisky with brandy with same proportions.

Put two ice cubes in a martini glass, add two measures of gin and one measure of Rose's Lime Cordial.

But for a general rule mix two measures of your favourite spirit (gin, vodka, surgical spirit, whatever), one measure of your favourite liqueur (cointreau, benedictine, midori, cough syrup) and top up with your favourite fruit juice.

1) Drambuie with lemonade
2) Jägermeister with coke
3) Hot chocolate with Cointreau -- it's like a chocolate orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry%27s_Chocolate_Orange) in a drink

I tried the first after trying Drambuie neat. I don't know what they put in it, but that shit is strong (and tasty)... and I can drink vodka as though it were water.

Slow Comfortable Screw - that's sloe gin, Southern Comfort, vodka, amaretto and orange juice. Goes down easy.

Mr friends and I came up with a variation on Diesel - thats beer, cider and a dash of blackcurrant which resembles agricultural fuel, hence the name - by adding wine. We called it Vin Diesel and invented purely for the amusing name.

Ahh one a flat mate of last year told me, its not too simple and its a bit like Diesel (the cocktail not the fuel), very nice though :)

Start off with a Smirnoff Ice or WKD blue, a whole standard size bottle into a pint glass.
Add roughly a third of a pint of Strongbow apple cider.
Some black currant cordial.
A shot or two of Vodka.

Think that's it, I enjoy them. :)

This recipe for a cosmo is stolen from an international corporation I will not name.

cranberry juice.

shake with ice and strain into a chilled 5 oz. martini glass. garnish with a lime (traditional) or drop a cherry in the center.

Yeah, I know from it's from an international corp, but I have no idea where they got the idea that there is peach anything in a cosmo...it's lemon, lime, and cranberry.

As for citron, it is what was originally used and what is called for by the IBA

Adding a "few drops creme de cacao" is the trick. Actually wasn't our original idea. Read in a bar book (like 35 years ago) that creme de cacao is sometimes added in place of the bitters. Tried it and liked it :) Now we add both! It's kind of like adding cocoa powder to chilli. If you actually taste the chocolate flavor you've added too much. But the nice thing about food and drink is we all have different tastes and can explore those without hurting anyone.

How did I forget the White Russian? Good call. Also if you're looking for taste and not intoxication, Kahlua and cream alone is tasty.

Chimayo:
1 part tequila
2 parts tart apple cider (adjust proportions to taste)
dash grenadine (optional)
garnish with thin apple slice

Simple, easy, unusual, yummy.

If you've got nothing else in the house, Stoli Vanil splashed into Coke makes a Vanilla Coke worth drinking. In fact, Stoli Vanil can be splashed into just about anything and make it worth drinking. ;)

Also, everyone should learn how to make (and drink) a martini.
