Hell if i didn't have a girlfriend, and wasn't engaged to her, along with the fact that we want kids in a little while, yeah I would quit school to play the game...I'm so damn addicted to guitar hero and rock band at this point the only thing getting me away from it is my girlfriend walking up in front of me and starting to make out with me. But sometimes depending on the song i can keep playing because i have a few memorized...it freaks her out :D

But this story was a hell of alot funnier

I shall have to remember this when actual guitarists are whining about Guitar Hero. I wonder how many of them was up $1000 by time they were 16.

While not a guitarist, I was well over that amount at 16 just from landscaping. I averaged more than that per month during the summer, even with football practice. And that was after expenses...is this kid paying for the electricity he's using? What about the controllers that he burns through?

$1000 in a year is nothing to brag about. This kid's parents did him a huge disservice. Of course, if he wins a noteworthy amount, I retain the right to change my opinion.

Well he has been out of school a year (almost) and made only 1000.

If someone had decent skill and found a decent not great group it does not seem that hard to only break 1000 bucks with a whole year to work with.

Working a real job even only part time they could expect to make like 15+ times that amount that money during the same time frame

Its not like this guy is raking in 1000 bucks a competition right now that appears to be the total

Still, it's $1000 from playing guitar hero.

Wow, $1,000 in a whole year? Hell, he'd make a good twelve times more money working at McDonalds for the same amount of time. I guess aspiring to achieve the per-capita income of India isn't too bad for a professional gamer.

What kind of parents let their kid be home schooled just so they can play Guitar Hero more? Thats possibly jeprodising his physical health and his grades.

Why are some so impressed by him winning $1000 in a year? That's $20 a week on average; 3 hours at minimum wage.
Not really something to be impressed at.

I don't know what kind of drugs he slipped into his parents water, but I wish I had some of them when I was younger. If I had ever tried something like that, I'd have been chucked out on my ass in a heartbeat.
Even if I tried to take them to court on charges of child abandonment, my father would simply have walked up to the judge and said, "Your Honor, he wants to play fucking Guitar Hero for a living. While living in my house he wants to piss away his life."

Are you Fing kidding me? "We couldn't take his complaining." I could never pull this shit, EVER!!!!! Be an assertive parent and tell this kid that he doesn't get to rule the roost until he turns 18 and leaves the house. Hell, at 17.5 my father gave me an ultimatum..."you want to go to college boy?" My response: well, I have a 98.785 GPA on a 100 point scale, 1360 on the SAT's taking it once, multiple sports, community service, a job, AP scores of 4 and 5...Yeah Dad, I want to go to college." His response, "well boy, you're joining the Marine Corp first. Let's see if you can cut it there and then you can go to college." I went active and then reserves all through college up until this point. I'm not saying what my father did was ideal, but he sure as hell wouldn't put up with me complaining about not wanting to go to school. Hell, if I quit he'd have put me in the Corp even sooner. Be a parent you weak minded sons of Snitches!

God, no! Not if he's only earned $1,000 between September 1, 2007 and now (August 21, 2008).

High school, graduated or not, only qualify someone for a minimum wage job. If he finally decided to change his mind later on he can still just as easily get a GED and go to a community college. If not, then he's doing his community a favor by not wasting tax payers money to keep him in school for 2 more years. I don't see what's the problem here.

It wouldn't be "check please". It would be more like "I have to go to the bathroom." She makes a move toward the door cause she doesn't want to pay for his sorry ass.

Edit: Before I clicked on the linky I figured this was a story out of South Korea or Japan.

Also as many already have pointed out. A thousand is nothing to quit school over. There are so many other ways to make money as a kid that could surpass a thousand in much less time than this kid has spent in front of the tv playing video games. Way back when before 16 I bet I made a decent chunk of change having a paper route and mowing lawns. Adjusted for inflation I was probably pulling in a thousand a month while going to school.

"We couldn't take the complaining anymore," Peebles' mother Hunter told the News & Observer. "He always told me he thought school was a waste of time."

Two questions...

1. How in the hell did these parents make it through the kids early years if a little complaining made them cave on this issue?

2. How is school a bigger waste of time than Guitar Hero??

Honestly, the parents ought to be made to go to school in his place, as they clearly need to be taught a few things.
