O.K... after posting a message where I identified myself as ex-U.S. Navy (it's out there now, no use trying to recall it), I realized that the worst enemies to our privacies are ourselves! ( o.k., maybe not a huge revelation in terms of net usage, but the 1st time I had applied the principle to myself, personally.).

Just wondering, and it's an experiment that can be applied on a personal level to yourselves later; tel me about me, by being snoopy about me on this forum. GO!

The details of your life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? Your father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. Your mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet...

Yet seriously...

A brief scan tells me you live in small town America, most likely north east, possibly Massachusetts or a nearby state. However, your wife is from the South, a nice contrast for your 3 children. You're late 30's, possibly early 40's.

You work in a factory on a shift basis, I would guess something in engineering.

You're naturally Republican, though you're not a fan of the current administration, John McCain is probably a great fit for you. You enjoy old-fashioned values and politeness and you attend church every Sunday. You consider yourself a good citizen of your town.

Interests include vehicles, a preference for motorbikes and you enjoy reading light science fiction though I suspect you like a bit of Clive Cussler when possible.

That much is fairly easy, simply from scanning your last 100 posts.

We do give away a lot more than we should, then again, some people have regular contact with each other and communicate constantly, there's even meet ups.

I guess it's a question of how comfortable you are, everyone's different.

I'm not!

You live in a village within or not far from the state of NY, and you're about 40. You know good left hand, right hand, two-hand techniques, but you don't use them much anymore, which you sometimes nostalgically miss. You would vigorously deny being a dancing gay effeminate man, and 4 people can attest to that.
You don't work in any security-related job, since otherwise you wouldn't have spilled out in 188 posts much more than I have leaked in 6500 (this plus three purely NS-related side forums).

What you're supposed to do, is create an initially subtle conflicting history, which you continue to perpetuate until someone notices the conflict.

When asked about it, you 'reveal' that the original information you gave away was just a crappy joke.

Or you can, you know, just 'fess up. Maybe you're not as uncomfortable with it as you claim. :)

For Clive Cussler, read adventure'ish books, perhaps Michael Crichton is a better fit. I'd still say you'd enjoy Clive Cussler since it's fairly Navy/Engineering based adventure.

Having said that, it still doesn't say too much about you, I'm sure you could be one of thousands of people.

Ever heard of the NSA?
Ever search for info on an extremist military or political group you've never heard of? How about a sexual act that you didn't know existed? Maybe a health condition that only occurs in 1:10,000,00 births?

Steppenwolf :)

Hard to say, something rock for sure, you'd have been 18-25 in the late 80's but that doesn't mean you don't prefer late 70's rock.

I'd probably settle on Led Zep or Pink Floyd, one of the two but it could be a little more obscure - to be honest, I'm not American so I don't know which bands are really iconic there - possibly the great Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band.

I'm hedging :)

However, I bet you love a bit of Pete Seeger when romancing the wife.

EDIT: I might mean Bob Seger, whoever sang Hollywood Nights.

Here you go, in Boston as well...

I suppose, if one cares to really look, one could probably narrow down most people who write on these boards, just because most of us don't really care, doesn't mean the information isn't out there.

There could well be people sitting in their basements building up large profiles of everyone on these boards, if just for their own interest.

Reminds me of a wonderful quote from Winston Churchill who described the "great" traditions of the Royal Navy as "rum, sodomy and the lash"

With regards to anonyimity however, to be honest someone who really wanted to find things out about you (be they government or criminal) would probably be able to find out a lot more about you from a multitude of other sources than NSG. Most people however don't really care and the profile you could glean from something like Nationstates could be any of hundreds of people.

I suspect from what I've posted on nationstates people could probably narrow me down to half a dozen people however  but this mostly related to data collection for my work and thus my professional life. And I suspect most of you really don't care.

Banger explained already:

I gleaned any information from scanning the first lines of your last 100 posts, which I can get from your profile.

It's really not impressive at all and most of my actual guesses seem off the mark...

With a longer posting history, searching for keywords works well too. Eg. "makes angry" or some colloquialism for that ... people are much more likely to resort to "argument from authority" when they're angry, and give away details in the process (eg their occupation or places they have lived.)

Even comments like "it just started raining" can be correlated against a weather map, and with enough data points, a person's location narrowed down to within a kilometre or so.

I don't do that, and I hope others don't do it to me. It's basic netiquette (see, that's a give-away too ... I really am old) to respect anonymity unless someone specifically wants to not have it.
